Will Phins Young D-line Flash V.S. Atlanta?

Can Phins young D-linemen create a respectable interior run defense?

The long wait is almost over. Phins fans and the Miami Dolphins have their sights locked on Thursday’s preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons as the first real test of this new regime.

Yummy.

One position I’m dying to see in action is our interior defensive lineman.

The Dolphins invested heavily on the position when they used their 1st Round pick on Clemson’s Christian Wilkins. They need to see quick dividends from him if they want to have success in 2019. So far in camp, he hasn’t disappointed. Wilkens has made plays and established himself has an immediate starter.

Phins have three young and talented D-Tackles

Wilkens buzz is reminiscent of last year with Minkah, where he was a stud in college with nothing but praise from those around him. What’s there not to love about a hard-working guy who loves football, has a great back story, and wants nothing more than to be the best.

All signs point to him being a solid starter for many years to come.

In addition, the Dolphins also have two other young guns entering their third year in the league with Davon Godchaux and Vincent Taylor. Both players have made an impact in their first two years. Godchaux though will have a little different role at times as the Phins primary Nose Tackle. Will they take the next step in their development this year?

Of the two, Godchaux has received more love from the best football betting software like www.AcePerHead.com. But, I believe that Vincent Taylor might actually be the better of the two players. Taylor was having himself a pretty good start of the season last year with 2 sacks in the 8 games. Unfortunately, his season was cut short due to injury.

However, Taylor is healthy now and has looked very good so far in camp.

Lastly, the Dolphins also have 6-year veteran Akeem Spence who is stout in the middle and also has the ability to get to the QB up the gut.

Will this four-man rotation of Wilkins, Godchaux, Taylor, and Spence improve on the 2018 dismal rush defense that ranked 31st worst in the league? They’d better because you don’t win a lot of games in this league giving up an average of 145.3 yards per game on the ground.

Last year, the Dolphins were shredded inside right out of the gate in Week 1 in Preseason. In 2018 Atlanta was the 27th ranked rush offense in yards, but 12th in yards per attempt. In the draft, the Falcons used two 1st Round picks to bolster their O-line on G Chris Lindstrom and T Kaleb McGary. So, they should be a solid test for this interior D-line and Phins defense in general.

I’m not saying this group must be All-World overnight, but we do have a young and promising group of players in the middle of the defense. They should be able to make strides this season and keep this unit from being a weakness… and shades of those strides should be seen against Atlanta.

What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins News fans expectations for our interior defensive lineman unit this upcoming season?
