Will Phins ‘New Discipline’ Show Against Atlanta?

Phins were sloppy on Saturday… no biggie if they make a 360 fast

I saw a quote the other day saying that this Phins camp is looking like a “Don Shula type Training Camp” with the extra focus on conditioning and discipline.

The quote put a smile on my face. But, I had to wonder will the same be said come the scrimmage?

It wasn’t as we all know. The scrimmage/practice was a whistle fest. I’ll have to wait for Week 1 of Preseason to see this new discipline, consistency, and conditioning on display. While M.J.’s coverage of the scrimmage/practice offered reasons to not hang my head at how ugly it was, the quicker I see this disciplined Phins team, the quicker I’ll relax.

Despite the yellow-flag bonanza on Saturday, I like how Flores has run camp

Throughout camp, most mistakes have been followed by a run to the Takes No Talent “TNT” sign. ‘These runs’ have served a twofold purpose of stressing discipline and in the process getting these guys in better condition.

Bobby McCain said, “He has never been in a training camp where the team had to do this much running, but it is a good thing.”

There’s no doubt the running will build endurance and an ability to deal with the heat. What about discipline though? Conditioning is all well and good, but it’s team discipline that will turn this franchise around. Will “TNT” make a difference there?

It will make a difference to the players who learn. Others, who are hard-headed and need to go… this year or next, not a drop. This regime must send the biggest culprits packing before the season starts instead of living with their mistakes as Gase did.

Still, this ‘ole’ school’ camp is music to my ears given the club med that Gase and Philbin ran.

Some want the top pick in the Draft… I want to win as much as possible in 2019

Let’s face it, everyone is betting the Dolphins will have the worst record in the league. It’s not as if this roster is All-Pro. The best sportsbook providers like AcePerHead.com, predict an abysmal Regular-Season win total of 4.5 over -145. For the interested bettor, this means one would need to risk $145 to win $100 on the over 4.5 total wins for the Dolphins 2019 season.

A less talented team like the Phins can’t afford to beat themselves… and stupid, pre-snap penalties are the backbone of disastrous seasons. But, an untalented team can be respectable with strong team discipline. That’s all I want this season: the Dolphins to be respectable again. Next year I’ll dial it up to greatness.

The Dolphins will not be the most talented team, but they can get an edge by being the best conditioned and disciplined team. Even Philbin had them disciplined… though not much else though.

Time for Flores’ discipline to be seen and not heard

Under Coach Gase, this team was horrendous in the penalty department.  In 2016 the Dolphins were 28th worst in the league with 7.7 penalties per game, in 2017 they were 31st worst in the league at 8.6 penalties per game and in 2018 they improved to 14th in the league at 6.8 penalties per game.

Gase had the Phins mastering the Art of Beating Themselves after 2016

Only a few miracles saved the 2018 team from being Top 5… in losing.

Gase came out with a big stick like Flores… but it shrunk to a toothpick overnight.

There’s no doubt this attention to detail that Coach Flores is trying instilling is the first step to every successful team. Anything less would be a bad sign. But results on the field is worth a ton of talk. So my advice to Brian Flores is fire or bench any player who is undisciplined.

It’s high time the Dolphins stop beating themselves week in and week out.

Isn’t it?

Having character and teaching character

This strict style is a reflection of the type of person Coach Flores is. It’s not like with Gase where it was for show. Flores’ father was a military man, so these principles are ingrained in him. He’s a far cry from the brash, ego-centric Gase.

Unfortunately, coaching is equal measure character, teaching, and leadership. Plenty of high quality, very disciplined guys have become Head Coaches and flopped with undisciplined teams.

I know Flores is a quality person. The questions I have is will he lead those who are borderline to the right side of the tracks? And does he have the guts to cut out those who are talented but undisciplined until he has enough likeminded players to be successful?

Don Shula always put an extra emphasis on conditioning to have an edge in early home games under the scorching Miami sun. The Phins usually took advantage of visiting teams because of it too. Of course, Shula wasn’t just a man of character and disciplined, he could teach… and cut those who weren’t able to learn.

We know what kind of man Flores is. In a couple of days, we will get a clearer picture of who he is as a coach.

What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins news fans thoughts on Flores’ extra focus on conditioning and discipline?
