Why The Julius Thomas Trade Was A Good Move

Julius Thomas passed his physical and is officially a Dolphin

While injuries have limited Thomas, he has all he tools to be a seam threat

Some say the Miami Dolphins trade for Julius Thomas was a touchdown. Some fans say it was a turn over. I say it was a first down catch with a chance for good YAC.

So far, the disclosure of the contract hasn’t been posted, but the word on the street of sports writers is that it was a big time restructure for a lot less money. If this ends up being the case, cha-ching! And any money saved going into this Free Agency is a very, very good thing—especially given all the holes on the Dolphins roster.

Then there’s the relationship between Adam Gase and Thomas. Gase went after him… to me, that’s a darn good indicator for any Real Bookies Lines. Gase has been pretty much spot with his evaluations and decisions.

I’ll his picks to the track any day.

But, another point is that Thomas also wanted to team up with Gase again so bad that he was willing to forgo millions.

My lovely wife would be hard pressed to keep me, if someone offered me million to trade up… just kindin’ babe.

Without anymore risky analogies, you get my point? Serious cash forgone to play for Gase.

Thomas has the potential to be a solid contributor, if he can stay healthy

Both these guys wanted to make this happen. And Thomas was so willing that he chose not to hit Free Agency (if he were going to be cut) or take less to play for Miami (if Jacksonville was intending on keeping him).

That’s looks like two darn good signs to me.

There are fans that think this is a bust move. I’ll take Gase’s acumen over their’s… and mine too at this point–until proved otherwise.

But, the big advantage here is in the 2017 Draft. The Dolphins may have had too much pressure to draft TE O.J. Howard if he were available. Now, with this trade, there is a plausible reason to go in another direction, if they chose to.

This is critical: freedom in choosing who they want in the draft.

In this draft, with so few picks compared to so many needs, they must have flexibility. To be successful, they must not be forced to chase need. Mike Tannebaum and Co. need to take the right player and not make moves out of desperation.

This trade gives the Dolphins one less hole and that alone, for a 7th round pick, is worth it’s weight in gold. Go Fins!!!

…note to mj …even when I hit reply to Fritz post, it posts out of thread at the top where it makes no sense in reading order …seems this happens only when I post from my phone …didn’t do that before all the changes

Jimmy is away for 2 weeks… I’ll let him know. Sorry about that brother.

      …yee hah!!!!!!!

…a 3rd and two 5ths as comp picks in this draft …better than I dared hope

…this is a deep defensive draft …good defensive prospects still be there in the 3rd

…and you never know about 5th rounders …the best QB in the last decade was drafted in the 6th …or the FO could bundle those picks to move up if a name high on their list drops

…no matter what happens, that 3rd round comp pick makes Tannenbaum’s bundle for Caroo in the last draft look a lot less costly

      …so far, so good 🙂

Yeah, a bunch of things (which I need to write up– get back soon Jimmy, I’m swamped) have been going Miami’s way… It’s like death by a hundred cuts. All these little things are building. Of course, they need to make the right moves in the big areas (Draft FA) to make these positive little things be felt. But, so far, this has been all good news.

…with no 3/4 round picks, unless comps fall there, the top 2 have to be hits at need positions

…bpa is great when you’re starting positions are set, but unless the FO hits 4 for 4 in FA, we will still have big holes at G/LB that must be filled in rounds 1/2 …and because we made the playoffs, we are lower in the draft than we have been for many years

…assuming we go 3×4 in FA, Tannenbaum might package the 1/2 and try to get into the top end of the first …it’s his style …just speculation but we’ll see after FA

The reason why BPA would be a viable option is we have many needs. Most of what I have been reading states that DL and LB are more bountiful in this years draft. Very few QB and WR which we don’t need as well as few CB and Safety. The only dilemma would be if the best TE is sitting there and no other player is anywhere as good.
I think, rather than move to the top of the draft, an attempt to move down and get an extra pick so we could actually get 2 LB. I think Cunningham out of Vanderbilt will still be there at the top of the second round.
      Your thoughts MJ and Lemmus.

…it all depends on FA …if we get one each quality LG/RG/OLB/MLB in FA, then yes, BPA in the draft …but if we go 2/4 or 3/4, then BPA is out and we draft for MUSTs

…the other side of FA is who we lose and what holes that will create …Stills likely price tag keeps jumping …Sims/Alonzo/et al are by no means sure things

…I doubt we go 4/4 in FA but then I didn’t see the Albert/Thomas deals coming either …as MJ iterated above, the portents look good in Miami and more FA players will want to come here, even if the money isn’t quite as good as they could get in say, SF/Cleve/Buff …so its not entirely out of the box to go 4/4 and then BPA in the draft

…if its BPA then bet on Tannenbaum making a move up or down …bundling the 1/2 round picks to move up for a starting DE, or trading down to get multiple 3/4 round picks where quality defense will still be available …DLs and DBs

…I’m not in the camp that sees another TE or DL as high round picks even if BPA …a DE or a S first, maybe a Corner if they are the BPA …but we have lots of young players in their 2/3 year that these coaches are working up to become starters

…if we do get 3/4 round picks I’d think Center …Pouncey has holes in his game, has been out a lot, and Gase wants to run behind someone who can get to the 2nd level

…2 Gs and 2 LBs (with 4-3 experience) are MUSTs in my book …only when those are filled can we even think about BPA …just my opinion, worth what it cost you 🙂

Agree except for S. With Jones we have one spot locked. He’ll get signed. Issa might be done or not, but they could go back to the FS / SS concept and away from the mirror concept and that would make it easier to find a S. Personally, I see DE, LG and MLB as critical spots that must be filled. SLB, DT, RG, S, TE, and DE2 can all get temporary fillings. But, the former need critical touches NOW!!!!!

Heard the same Fritz… but, I’m reading up on two G’s that are top of the heap in the draft that are hovering around 22: Lamp and Feeny I believe are there names. Been so darn busy theses days that my Dolphins time has been crunched–need to get my priorities straight!!! I’ll be back in a groove this week and Jimmy should be back soon. But yeah, DT, DE, G, LB are all needs, but LB has alot of suitors in the first 22… and DE’s and G’s not so much, Fritz.

  • Lemmus

…the devil is in the details …if the pundits have it right about the contract, it’s all to the good …we get a high caliber TE in a position of need that performed very well in Gase’s system before …and all it cost was a 7th this year …what isn’t to like about that?

…the other side is that we were going to cut Albert and eat his dead money …now we get a 7th next year and no dead money …and it’s a nice, rare positive that Albert is ok with the trade

…naysayers aside, I see this as a sweet portent of more good tidings to come

    • admin

Me too. I think you start seeing player want to come here…especially players that need to get their game in order.

  • Fritz

Excellent move. Fill a huge need. Use the 1st round pick to take the BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE and I would say other than a running back or QB, that could literally be any position. So, if BPA is LB, DE, DT, OL or even TE, I say go for it. We have so many positions of need that I anticipate being happy with the 1st round pick as long as its a great prospect. Go Dolphins!

I think so, I dont want them so forced into taking O.J. I mean TE’s are great, but not with this D. They need pieces in that D now, Fritz!
