When are the Phins going to Lock up Vernon and Tannehill?
The Dolphins have agreed to a long term extension deal with their Pro Bowl CenterMike Pouncey as everyone knows. It is a 5-year deal that is reportedly worth more than $50 million with around $20 million in guaranteed money, making Pouncey the highest-paid center in the league. But the question we are asking is what next?
The Dolphins have two other former draft picks that will soon be having their rookie contracts expire within the next year or two and that will cost significant money in order to keep them in a Miami Dolphin uniform. Those two players are Ryan Tannehill and Olivier Vernon.
Most sports betting softwarefans have already heard strong whispers that the Dolphins would like to lock up Tannehill to a long term $100 million dollars plus deal, but are just trying to do it in the most efficient and concise way possible. They may do it over the summer or they may opt to pay the 5th year option on the contract, just like they did with Pouncey, so they can give themselves one more year of evaluation and time to work out a long term deal.
In regards to Vernon, nothing has been leaked in terms of Miami or Vernon working on a long term deal. Vernon’s camp has expressed that they are looking for a deal that pays around $8-$10 million a year, which is definitely in the ballpark for a defensive end of his caliber. These are all talented young core players for the Dolphins, and the organization has already found a way to lock up Pouncey, now they need to find a way to lock up Tannehill and Vernon. Next year’s free agency is going to be a rough period for us because it’s when we take the biggest cap hit from the Suh deal. There is not going to be enough money for Vernon and Miller. This is why I believe this organization is looking to hit on a RB in the draft, all the way up to the 1st with Gurley. Running back isn’t a need right now but it will be soon because just signing Vernon and Tannehill will be a challenge. Safety and corner need to show some development because Grimes’ contract might be one of those in need of revision, depending on the year he has. And if we draft an MLB early, then Misi will become expendable. I don’t even want to think about Wake. We need to have a really good draft either way this year and next because free agency will not bring anything other than heartbreak from losing players.
