Whats the deal with Vontae Davis?

Vontae Davis was selected 25th overall in the 2009 draft, and in each of his three seasons he has had flashes of brilliance. However, most of the time he is like a gorgeous girl who flirts with you, acts as if she likes you and, then at the end of the night she is no where to be found. Going into his fourth year Davis has teased phins news fans into believing he can finally take the next step in his game, and become the shut down corner we believe he can be. But every time he appears to be on the cusp of finally getting it, he manages to have a mental slip up, hamstring injury, or lack of effort.

Recently there have been reports from training camp that not only has Davis been nagged by injuries, but he has also been supplanted by veteran Richard Marshall as one of the two outside cornerbacks in the base 4-3 defense. Is this possible, has Davis lost his starting spot? It seems preposterous, especially since phins news fans can agree that Davis has at least been consistently better than fellow teammate Sean Smith. It has been reported that Smith has been playing exclusively with the starters, and Davis is the one who has been afflicted by the rotation at the other cornerback spot.

Will this apparent demotion, spark a fire under Davis’ ass or will he wilt like a dying flower, under the pressure of having to compete for a starting spot? Throughout his career he has never been known to be someone who has shined brightly during training camp. However, I think we can agree that Davis has been a gamer, saving his best stuff for when it counts. Davis is a very talented young man, but can he parlay this talent into a productive season this year? Last year he was limited by a hamstring injury, but in 12 games he was still able to haul in 4 interceptions. There is no reason to doubt that if healthy he can at least parlay his skills into even more interceptions this season, but if he can’t even be one of the two best cornerbacks on the team, then there is definitely a deeper concern. Will Davis be able to be able to parlay this adversity into a successful season, or could this be Davis’ last year in a Miami Dolphins uniform?
