What Was the Point of Trading for Rosen?

Miami made a good deal to get Rosen, but you have to wonder why?

When the Phins traded a second and fifth-round draft pick for Josh Rosen many of the bookie website software providers applauded their decision to take a flier on the young quarterback. So did I… until he was benched.

But, with Rosen and the bench and the fact we will draft a quarterback with one of our top picks in this coming draft, I’d rather of had the picks from the trade instead of Rosen. We could have used those picks on an offensive lineman or defensive end in the last draft.

In fact, Center Eric McCoy was picked by the Saints with Miami’s original 2nd Rd pick. McCoy has been one of the rookies so far. He has solidified the interior of the O-line for Brees and, more impressively, Bridgewater.

Phins missed out on Winovich and McCoy to get Rosen

While we do have the Saints 2nd next year, we could have had Chase Winovich instead of Rosen. One of those two stud players looks much better now than ‘Rosen the backup’ and some unknown next year.

So far, this isn’t a winning trade.

With Fitzpatrick again named the starter, it really doesn’t make any sense to have wasted a blue-chip pick on a player who’s not a key piece to the future. Sure, Rosen may be a cheap, potential backup next year, but the writing is on the wall: Rosen is not going to be a starter in Miami.

If Rosen doesn’t see another start this season wasn’t it a poor buy by Grier and Flores?

Fitzpatrick gives us our best chance?

I understand that we are in reset mode. But, there is a great chance we may not even win a game this year with Fitzpatrick starting… so who cares if he gives us the best chance to win? I’m mean, everything we’ve done since the last offseason was about NOT giving us the best chance to win this year.

The season is already down the drain, so why not let Rosen finish it out to get a more complete evaluation of him? Even if the coaching staff believes they have a full evaluation on him, at least let him play to see if he surprises? Phins need to try and get some compensation for that blue-chip used to get him.

Also, if Rosen flopped this hard, what does that say about this regime’s ability to evaluate a QB?

What happens if Fitzpatrick does win us a couple of games? You know what happens; we end up getting a worse position in the draft. And if everything has been about keeping our eyes to 2020 Draft, then isn’t our ‘best chance’ to have Rosen start?

Rosen panning out or getting the #1 pick is Miami’s ‘best chance’

If Flores isn’t tanking or is trying to camouflage the tank it’s the best move. But, in the most important part of the Dolphins goals, finding a franchise QB, it might end up a loser. And finding franchise quarterback is what it’s all about.

What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins News fans’ thoughts about the Rosen situation?

    Hello Dol-Fans and admin

By now we all are familiar with Washington QB Eason transfer from Georgia Bulldogs and doing well. https://youtu.be/93u7tiiOf4o against # 19 Utah

Washington State QB Anthony Gordon who has thrown for more passing yardage than Joe Burrow’s as of week 8.Washington State vs #19 Utah | Week 5 https://youtu.be/hw2KO6Sn_5M against Utah

Now meet Utah’s QB Tyler Huntley who is most likely the Best PAC 12 player. He maybe a 7th rounder or un drafted. I think he’s being overlooked?

And to his credit, Huntley is having the best season of his career. He’s one of the greatest reasons Utah has an offense ranked No. 8 in offensive efficiency, according to ESPN, and has the team beating opponents by an average of 27.1 points (30.8 points in Pac-12 play).

Huntley is the fifth best quarterback in the country in total QBR and has a season completion percentage of 73.1%. Following his latest game, where he played only one half and threw for 214 yards and one touchdown on 11-of-17 passing, Huntley leads the nation in percentage of catchable passes at 85.9%.

Below are three games when the Dolphins beat the Patriots down. Each game the Dolphins were well balanced. One dimensional will not beat the Patriots when it counts. I keep putting emphasis on the nations top running backs.

    Hello Dol-Fans and Admin

I like Rosen alot but he must compete in order to make the this team. 2020 the Dolphins will select a QB in what round I’m not sure.

The Dolphins are staying the course of losing in a professional way. On the other hand there are NFL teams out there who are just terrible for what ever the reasons? We cannot allow these teams to steal the number picks.

The Dolphins have given up the most to earn the number picked.

    Hello Dol-Fans and Admin

Here’s an article posted last December 2018 about starting from cratched with the Dolphins

Yeah, good one, echoes what I wrote a month earlier https://phinsnews.com/miami-dolphins-news-ross-build-from-scratch-dont-try-to-remodel-a-pile-of/ (pats himself on back)… so I get it, but I’m seeing some failings starting to rise up. Rosen is a key one ( still early though). Missing on key plays is another. Either they went full retard or are tanking. Don’t like either. Then they gave Howard a big contract with his bad knees. We could have recieved picks for him and I’m concerned about that knee… pretty damn concerned. Drafting Wilkens over Lawrence is another (still early though). The list of good and bad is tilting toward bad. Now the biggest weight comes this draft… so it’s still very early. But, I was expecting a bit better at this point. If Miami ends up winning some games or goes 0-16 will help me view this regime in the proper light as well. Right now I don’t know how to view them. I still need to see next year obviously, but if they draft okay ad wins only a couple of games… it will be hard to paint a pretty picture of the future.

        Hello Admin!

You posted the key to the dolphins success.
This is key: Ross needs to hire someone who knows football and then be a silent partner… I mean not even a peep.

I saw this write up in the same posting!

This is my fear with the Dolphins trading up in the draft for Drew Lock, Justin Hurbert or Will Grier.
        xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Hurbert stayed in college and nothing on Grier and Lock yet?

They must nail the QB. Rosen is a second-round pick. Burrow or Tua or someone else… most will end up busts. I suck at evaling college QBs… they must be excellent. Pats passed on Rosen and took Winovich… we could have done the same. This regime will be meh unless they hit at a fairly high rate. Grier has stocked up the picks… that seems his skill, but can Flores and Marvin find the right players? I can’t tell if they are tanking on purpose or not. So I can’t really eval them. I’m not so high on their picks so far, although it’s not bad and they found some promising after market specials. Nothing is screaming great, but some is hinting at average. Time will tell…

          • Steve

When Grier and his team traded for Rosen they saw something in him. I think the Dolphins should keep Rosen as a backup etc.

If the Dolphins can properly coach Rosen to released his passes and strengthen him to get away from defenders by running twenty yards or more practice sprints maybe. Secondly Create the best one to punch run game Will make him a more productive QB and help prevent him from getting killed on the field.

Its not fair to asked any quarterback to sit back in the pocket taking hits while the receivers learn their routes or can’t break free? Rosen does possess ball skill that many Quarterbacks don’t possess. Now this is where the great coaching comes in. Miami need 3 serious Quarterbacks. One experience and two learning.

After watching Miami trade away players and other teams still have the best of talent and still cannot beat the dolphins. Makes you wonder should they be playing in the NFL league?

Admin the Point or reason trading for Rosen was a high risk gamble. College Quarterbacks are difficult to evaluate period. But just my opinion no one is perfect, the fins gambled on Rosen and the jury is still out on him. Unfortunately for Rosen he was placed in a terrible situation and asked to performed under a tanking situation in addition Rosen does not possess a dual threat which makes him a sitting duck on this team. Admin just my opinion it was best the Fins benched Rosen to prevent him from getting murder on the field? Most importantly the Dolphins cannot sugar coat the back field performance situation.

Fitzpatrick is a Veteran and understands that its not healthy to hold on to the ball.

This was Jimmy’s. But, I do agree with him in some regard, they had plenty of tape and NFL coaches to evaluate Rosen. At this point either they missed. I’m fine with rolling the dice, but now that they have put themselves in a situation where their evaluations are the only way to save this regime, they have one big strike against them at the most crucial position. Pats didn’t trade for him, though they considered it, so they made the right eval (so far). I do give Grier credit for the trades back to minimize the loss of picks though. My biggest concern with Rosen is his laid back personality. It is translating to the field. I do still think he can develop, but I see his ceiling as lower. I’m also of the mind Miami should win some games and don’t like the tank. Jimmy is a hardcore tanker and sticking Rosen in. Like you, I think he would get killed. Overall, the biggest positives are Williams and a ton of picks. The eval and coaching up part is still in the air at this point. If they don’t hit at a much higher level in the draft than this season, Miami is in trouble.

I would comment on the Dolphins QB situation, but I am absolutely clueless. Not that that has ever stopped me before. If it must be a QB in the 1st round, let it be Burrows or Herbert. Otherwise, go with Chase or some other Edge-rusher. Then get a lock-down CB – other than that, go with BPA. As if I have a clue.

My QB evals aren’t the best… I had concern over Rosen personality… not that he has a bad one, but he is laid back and a bit nice. When he said the team who picked QBs ahead of him would regret it… I liked that. He needs more of that. College QB eval are another weak point of mine as well. I have liked Burrow though early on… we’ll see. My two cents is Burrows or Young. I do know this, if they screw up this draft, it will get ugly. Yeah, they have two more picks in 2021, but they need to find at least 3 good play out of those 5 1st rounds and one needs to be a pretty good QB. If it weren’t for the head scratching calls I’d be a bit more positive. But at this point, I can’t really assess this staff…
