What To Think Of Foerster As O-Line Coach?

Chris Foerster, after turning down an offer for the Colts, as was reported by Fox sports Alex Marvez, was hired with little fan fare to preside over Miami’s most beleaguered unit, the offensive line. The chain of command is now set Gase, Christensen, and now Foerster. As any Fin Fan knows this is a crucial hiring and that as so goes the O-Line, so goes 2016. So who is Chris Foerster?

I totally forgot that he was the Offensive Coordinator of Miami in 2004, after the bye, when the “Stache” took tail. He was one of the members of the staff that lead Miami to a victory over the defending champs, the Patriots, in “The Night That Courage Wore Orange”. Starting in 1982 with Colorado State University till last year with the 49ers, he has 23 years of coaching.

Foerster has had many successful campaigns. He has coached great players in Daniels, Ogden, Christie, Williams, and Mayberry, and he has coached under greats like Dungy, both in his Tampa years and championship years with Colts, Mike Shanahan, and Dennis Green. He has been to many post season games, won a championship in ’03 with the Colts, and even had a somewhat success playing career as a center with the Rams in the late 70-s, early 80’s. He also has had three seasons as an assistant head coach with the Ravens in 05-07.

Bet on Football Online

It doesn’t take a great football wagering fan to see he “seems” to be a good pick up, not an exceptional talent or he would have risen to OC and even head coach, but a good member of the staff nonetheless. If the report is true, it’s nice to see that he chose this post over the Colts and that he see higher value here verses elsewhere. On the down side, his last couple of stints haven’t been as successful has his early years, but this is likely due to the talent disparities. The fact that he is experienced, has played, working with historical talent and coaches at the very least makes him knowledgeable and well traveled. What will he accomplish with Miami’s line is obviously yet to be determined, but the hiring does have upside. Any thoughts on this hiring will be appreciated. Go Fins!!!

Steve, so so true. I believe Billacheat could get the same players that we have drafted over the last decade and still win with said players. You can draft anyone you want, they still need to be coached up and put in the best position to succeed. We have failed miserably so!

it’ so sad…but true. Guy is THE best in the league….and top 5 all time, maybe higher with cheating factored in 🙂

Admin, I feel just about the same way. I really am high on Lippett, and if we were to take the top CB at 8, and there are 3 can’t miss corners this year (supposedly) and Lippett is for real we could be lock and loaded at the CB position on the cheap for 4/5 years while restructuring Grimes and moving him to the slot cover. It is a tough call, LBer or CB (for me CB), which ever one it is, it HAS TO BE a can’t miss day one starter, absolutely has to be. However; it would be great to have a difference maker at the middle LBer spot once again.

I see Miami “Tagging” OV. This would give them the time to work out a long term deal, or the ability to trade him, or remove the “Tag” at any time and move on. This makes the most sense for his situation from a team standpoint. Championship teams are built from the draft and retaining their own.

Admin/Fans, How about this scenario: If there is enough tape on Douglas at the center position and you feel he would be serviceable, do you take that chance and entertain trading Pouncey? For me it is a big fat “Yes”. Our O-Line can only go in one direction, and that is up or forward. Another reason why Foerester is a fine choice as O-Line Coach, can’t do any worse!!! Douglas is a fraction of the price, younger, and if we could get a second or third in return, “jump on it”.

There are a lot of options, albeit bold options. But, the one characteristic that Tannebaum has, is “brass”. He has never been afraid to make moves, right or wrong.

Admin, please tell me you are not mentioning about keeping D.Thomas as one of the starters going into next season? I know he was decent at run blocking. 2 new guards on opening day next year is a MUST.

  • Steve

I’m quite adamant about the fins drafing an offensive tackle in the 1st round and drafting the top offensive guard in the second round. Trade the 1st round pick for more picks.

Cameron Wake and Suh are the franchise for the Dolphins now. The Defensive End can wait another season or later round drive on with Wake he has been dominate when healthy and you know what you have already.

    **
Say the dolphins drop back as far as 23rd pick in the 1st (wounding up with Offensive Tackle Taylor Decker Ohio State.

Second round selecting Cody WhiteHair Offensive Guard from Kansas State or Vada Alexander LSA OG.

With extra pick could select OLB Jushua Perry Ohio State or Southern CAl Ju’a Cravens

I hear ya Steve, but for me it has to be defense/defense/defense. I know we need to address the guard position (undoubtedly), but we could wait a year for the tackle position and hope ours stay healthy. When is the last time this team has had a true difference maker at LBer, been to long. LBer/CB/DE in the first round. I may even consider trading next years picks or a player and try to obtain another first rounder and get our LBer and CB, taking Hargroove at 8 and the highest rated LBer on their board next, if value represents itself. There is a lot of money going to be spent on the defensive side of the ball and the offense can be real good on the cheap for a few years. So defense needs to be addressed throughout the draft this and next year.

Only thing about the all in for linemen, and I’m not saying I disagree, is the near complete void at CB. Taylor (ugghh, but maybe a better system and coaching “Could” help), Lippett (Actually looking forward to seeing what he can do-he has “a chance”), McCain (still young, not bad, maybe he could grow to a 2# – “maybe”), Grimes (no longer a #1 and way too expensive at 10 mill would rather see that go to Vernon or Miller – plus I can’t stand mika and I bet the coaches like her even less, so i expect him to go unless they muzzle her and use him as a stop gap). It would take a “Grimes like” gem in FO or stellar pick up mid rounds to keep Miami’s secondary from set on fire nearly every game, if they don’t get a CB in the 1-3 rounds where most CB’s come off the board. MAybe they can coach up what we have. But with the Pats you need a full secondary core to stop the spread and shred as it’s now being called. BUT, then I think about going through another season without a real line and wonder if it might be better to have no secondary…man we need an epic off season!!!

    Hello Dolfans

I quess if we stay focus on the questioned! How will the new offensive line coach fair? Coach Chris Foerster comes with the better Resume experience and accomplishment than the list of Head coaches hired by the Dolphins over the years.

That being said if Coach Chris is ask who are the best Offensive linemen in the NFL and in the 2016 Draft he would know better than Most coaches! So his input is more valuable.

Tannehill has taken about 184 sacks since his starts with the Dolphins?
The Run game is off and on.
The Dolphins in over 4 years has never won A meaningful Game.
Over 4 years the Dolphins has failed to show up on prime time TV games. (Maybe one thursday night game 2014).
When the Defense was good a few years ago. Then the offense would keep them on the field to long in a game. This does result in more injuries.

The offensive line must be solid no more May Pop Tire!. The Pats and several other teams will reload on the offensive Tackle in the 1st round. While the Dolphins will just pick who social media say they should pick.

    • Dunner

Steve, The Pats reload on tackle because they are picking late first round, and this year late second round, so the value is there and the probability of landing a starting player there is much higher than other positions at the same point of the draft.

      • Steve

        Dunner

I believed that the Pats drafted well because for over a decade they have had the last or next to last pick in the 1st round. Leaving teams like the Browns, Jets, Dolphins etc. spending big money on their gambled picks. While they spend less for theirs.

        • admin

Yeah Steve true. Also, that picks value made teams want to trade with them to jump back into the 1st – happened nearly every year for awhile – they made a killing on that pick for years!!!

    • admin

I agree with both of your points. The whole season could be over if Albert goes down, we dont aquire #1 Cb, a real MLB or fill the void at DE (dont think wake will be back and if Vernon asks for the world). I tell you this, if Tannenbaum somehow someway manages to guide the fins through this offseason with good + decisions, he’ll make a believer out of me. This is one hellava’ difficult position to be in. Bottom line though: Miami MUST acquire a CB and O-Linemen, no if and or but and they MUST start right away.

I feel you Brother! The Dolphins corners are in the 3rd round! Good height, etc.
Check this out if Miami Canes Artie Burns stay in college another year his senior year. No doubt he would be a 1st rounder? Wouldn’t he be a deal for the Fins?

Most of the best Cornerback would be in the late second early 3rd round.
        60th William Jackson III 6’1
        71st Rashard Robinson 6’2 LSU
        77th Artie Burns 6.0 Miami

I never believe the hipped on 1st round players. Richard Sherman was drafted 154th by Seattle Sea Hawks.

        • Dunner

DUde, with all due respect you are crazy if you think the best CBs are in the third or later round. Some are found, but the probability is WAY lower after the top 15 picks.

          • Steve

Good point! I may be nuts But! Training, good coaching will increased the player value. Tony Lippett was on my draft picks for the Fins. Tony played wide receiver, corner back for Michigan also he can run punts back.

I feel that the Cornerback position required proper trainer and coaching. Are the Tom Brady’s will make them pay on game day.

The last corner that we drafted was by Saban and he was a bust from LSU, I believed he was a 1st round 10 pick.

  • Ralph

The more I think about it the more sense it makes to trade back from #8 and pick up an additional draft pick or two depending on how far back we move
We need to fill lots of holes with good players and draftees are a lot cheaper than free agents

    • admin

If you pick right, it makes sense. Problem is as you go back in picks and rounds the acumen it takes to “hit” is obviously higher. Not to say even with the #1 overall you always hit, but it just takes higher levels of jackassery to screw it up. If Miami resigns Vernon Shelby then I could see it. But if not, then you need to acquire a DE and CB and that kind of physical talent x2 might be hard to get unless 1 part is taken with an early pick. My head is billowing smoke trying to figure the right course of action!!

  • Ralph

If we somehow pick a guard in free agency and one on the draft we could be ok but we also need someone who can do back up tackle and double as a backup center and guard or maybe 2 backups one guard one tackle
For the new offensive line coach to be successful he needs good players and our 2 guards are not good
Turner could be kept as a backup until he develops a bit more but Thomas has to be cut
Only a fool would keep Dallas Thomas in our roster
Rated the absolute worst starting or backup guard in the NFL
I hope we do get the extra compensatory draft picks for the free agents we lost last year – we need them

  • Aaron

I’m just glad we leave Fox go,that proves their wanting to replace the OL and hire a Beast of a Front Liberal for our shitty QB

  • Randy

if they don’t draft some mean food guards not in the later rounds. then the line will not be good. we need pass blockers & run blockers. there probably good free agents but at what price? and would they want to play for the Dolphins? had a chance last year to sign 2 best free agent guards

    • admin

Turner was serviceable as run guard..and I think that’s where Dallas should have always been. Albert makes it tough because he is so injury prone and the LT with a high salary. I’d love to find a good center and RG. It would be a luxury with so many holes, but Pouncy has turned the arrow down and is the top paid center…I think he is stuck here for this year because of cap. I always thought Jamil would be a good center and maybe he can develop and replace him. But LG was the major turnstyle (along with Fox) and that to me is the real weak link if everyone is healthy. LG in the late second or third always seems a fair deal if he can turn out very good- Mathis was a late third. With cap issues and talent issue Miami has to be ahead of talent round ratio in order to make any headway on their holes. Man, Mathis for 2.5 mill sound nice right about now…we were two time losers with that guy and it’s been haunting us ever since -although Incognito was a nice pickup, we could use another move like that right about now!!!

There isnt a coach in hell that can make chicken salad out of chicken shit, which is what the Fins OL is.

Also, it seems that every coach on this team was a position coach, no past HC experience nor play calling experience.

Is Gase hiring these guys or is Tannebaum?

    • Dunner

Freak, do you just cut and paste your post. Because it is the same chicken shit, song and dance every time. Duh…..

  • FlFred

Don’t we all wish we knew Tannebaum’s mindset ? Most mock-drafts have OL’s being a secondary thought for the Dolphins. The Mocks show the consensus as thinking that the Dolphins will draft a CB/FS first, an LB second, and maybe even a third as well. We have no idea if the Dolphins brain-trust wants to pay for adequate FA Guards to protect Tannehill. What is fairly certain and has been shown ( IMO ), is that neither of the current starters at Guard are up to the task. I am hopeful that the team will find a way to keep Lamarr ( RB ), and maybe even Wake ( DE ), ( that’s just for sentimental reasons and will require a restructure ). But few of us remember the last time the team had an complete OL that could substantially do their job ? I believe we are set at WR even if Rashard leaves. The team will need to focus on drafting a knarly DE too – no matter what happens. So many positions to be filled – so little money ( I am told ). It still made my day to know that they waved Fox ( RT ). Now I look forward to many more being waved starting with Jamar and Brice ( CB’s ) and “Doofus-Dion” ( DE/LB ) – if he even shows-up ?. Get poor ole’ Rashad Jones ( SS ) some help back there, put Brent as the secondary CB so that he doesn’t have to keep-up with the “stallions”, and get this team to where there can at least “show-up” and make a third down. Some of us are getting a bit “long-in-the-tooth” and we would like to remember a winner – not just from the Glory Days.

We have 3 #1’s on the line as is, except maybe Dallas, most good FO’s have one maybe two – the rest they pick up mid round. Physical talent is essential at certain positions LT probally is the only one on the line. DE’s, DT’s, CB’s, WR’s, Rb’s must have a certain level of physical talent to be starters, and with the exception of RB (who can get by with a good line), all others are usually found in early rounds. If Miami has to go get linemen in the 1st, unless they are superstars, they will suffer in latter rounds because they will be chasing talent. It’s alot harder to find a star CB mid round than a guard, center or RT. No saying I’m against getting a linemen in the 1st, but it will put alot more pressure on the remainder of the draft to have player contributing from all rounds. Not saying what I’m saying is end all be all, but more often than not that’s how it goes. Miami needs 2-3 starters and maybe 4 more strong contributors from the draft and FA. I think because of the cap issues FA will be pin point and a few and the draft is where talent acquisition for 2016 will be made or broken – the way it should be really. I’d like to see either a LT (only linemen unless a superstar I could see), DE or CB in the 1st – and from what I hear (I’m not draft expert) Cb’s arent expected to go in the early half of the draft. If Vernon isnt signed then DE is a must. If he is then maybe as alot of you are saying fall back if you can and find extra picks and that CB. But, again this is just my two cents…I’m no draft or college expert.
