What Does Miami Need To Do With Remaining Cap Space?

Cap space can be saved until next year

Most of the heavy spending and cap maneuvering by the Miami Dolphins has already been done for the upcoming season. The end result appears, at least on paper, that we have a better and deeper roster than last year.

Of course, the proof is in the pudding.

Based on the best price per head software as Ace Pay Per Head it appears that we have around $16 to $17.5 million in cap space left available for the 2017 season.

So the multi-million dollar question is, what will Miami do with this extra money?

There’s been a lot of speculation that it’s being saved to extend Jarvis Landry’s contract. However, the more time that goes by the less likely that either side will do anything that will influence this year’s cap number.

But we can always hope for a pleasant surprise before the season begins.

Another option is to sit back and wait until after each team makes their final roster cuts and see if there are any players that are worthy to scoop up. This is something that every team does, because the price of these types of players are generally minimal. So, even if Miami picks up a couple of other teams cast offs, it won’t cost that much, and there should still be plenty of space left.

There are also a bunch of free agent veteran players that have not been signed, and depending what happens in camp with performance and injuries, Miami may think about signing players like OT Ryan Clady, C Nick Mangold, CB Darrelle Revis, TE Gary Barnidge, OLB Paul Kruger, CB Brandon Flowers, DT Jared Odrick, WR Anquan Boldin, S Sam Shields, CB Leon Hall, G Orlando Franklin, and QB Colin Kaepernick just to name a few.

2018 will likely be similar to 2016 in regards to being tight with the cap

The last and actually most probably option for Miami is to do nothing, and then just roll over their remaining cap space to next season, where Miami is currently ranked as the third worst cap situation in the NFL.

According to overthecap.com Miami has $174,754,140 committed in 2018 contracts, and based on their calculations for what the 2018 salary cap is going to be, Miami only has $3,245,860 left in space.

However another reputable website for salary cap information– spotrac.com –calculated that Miami has $179,038,671 committed in 2018 contracts, but based on their calculations for what the 2018 salary cap is going to be, they have Miami Negative -$11,038,671 over the cap!

This is around a $14 million dollar difference and ranges from bad to terrible.

The bottom line is that Miami is going to be super tight with the purse strings in 2018.

Sure, Miami can easily free up cap space by not resigning such players as Bryon Maxwell ( $10 million), possibly say good-bye to Ja’Wuan James if he continues to regress ($9.75 million), Mike Pouncey (5 million saved), or Julius Thomas (6.6 million)…

…But the reality is, Miami really needs to be prudent in preparation for next season. This probably means not using all their available money, so they can instead roll it over to 2018, where it will be desperately needed. What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins News fans thoughts about what Miami will decide to do with their current available cap space?

…plan for the worst, pray for the best …most cap covers put us significantly over …how much depends on how you interpret the rules and how good the projected income numbers actually are

…but we’re hanging out there with Landry right now and if we don’t get a deal done by late July …and he has another good season …Katie bar the door …and that’s not even looking at Parker who is one year behind Landry and may be looking for a huge ’18 deal as well

…and then there is Suh and TH who’s caps have been Mickey moused until there is little squeeze left …especially TH if he has a good year, his agent is going to be looking to up the guarantee money for ’18 which would drive the cap …it’s one thing to say we could always get rid of him but what if he really does have a decent year? Starting NFL QB’s don’t grow on trees.

…so yeah, I’m more than a bit worried by the upcoming cap situation …especially if all the guaranteed money they passed out this year bites us in the arse next year

…as for Landry right now, I’d hope they can sign him to an extension before camp that keeps his cap hit 15 mil

…yikes, bad edit …under 11 mil cap hit …else it could be a 15 mil tag next year

I’m uncertain if Landry will be back at this point. If Landry can’t dominate outside, if he can’t post double digit TD’s, his cap is about 11-12 mill… maybe 13. If he does fail to dominate beyond the slot, then his asking price, if it should be higher than 13 mill, will be too much. Then there is the concern that Miami simply can’t afford him even if he does succeed on the outside. The only real leverage is to pay him this year. If they can say pay him 11-13 this year that would be 10-12 mill more than he would have and that could reduce his cap numbers over the life of the contract… if they don’t pay him this year, any team can match what Miami can give him. I feel a lot less positive that will get done and he will be a fin beyond next year.

…if Parker has a breakout year, then Landry’s stats will be down regardless …if it goes past camp opening, I can see them putting a 1st round tag on him in ’18 and letting him go to someone like Cleveland …but do you want to bet against Belicheat somehow stealing him instead 🙁

…best all around would be a 5 year contract worth 10-11 per with a high guarantee …they could front load it to sweeten the deal even more for him but that has bad karma written all over it
