What does Kiper Know?

Mel Kiper has been analyzing and dissecting college players for the past 31 years since 1984. He has become synonymous with the term Draft Guru, and his knowledge of college players over the years has been encyclopedic. However, as much as he is a student of the draft he has had his fair share of head-scratching predictions. His latest head-scratcher is his “ideal” picks for the Phins in the first and second rounds.

For the first round, his ideal pick for Miami is Nelson Agholor, the wide receiver from USC, who is 6’0”, 198 pounds and ran the 40 in 4.42 seconds. Most sports betting software fans as www.AcePerHead.com are projecting Agholor as a 2nd or 3rd round pick and as the 9th best receiver. Unless Kiper thinks that Miami is going to trade back to the late twenties, then drafting Agholor at the number 14th position is a reach and a half. Yes, we need a receiver, but not the 9th best receiver with the 14th overall pick. Agholor has some nice stats he logged last season with 104 receptions for 1,313 yards and 12 touchdowns, but he has been prone to dropping passes. However, his biggest strengths are that he is a good route runner, and has run after the catchability. Either way, I would not be happy if Miami selected him with the 14th pick. If all the top receivers are off the board, then they should select a Linebacker, Guard, or Todd Gurley before they select Agholor.

For the second round, Kiper’s ideal pick is for the Phins to select Quinten Rollins the Safety from Miami of Ohio, who is 5’11”, weighs 195 pounds and ran the 40 in 4.57 seconds. At least with Rollins, he is projected to be a 2nd or 3rd round pick, so at least this ideal pick is not a Stretch Armstrong type reach. Rollins was the 2014 MAC Defensive Player of the Year with 72 tackles, with 4 tackles for a loss, 1 forced fumble, 7 interceptions and 9 passes defended. He is a raw player, but he is very athletic as evidence that he was a two-sport star in both Football and Basketball, and with the right coaching he could be a very good starting Safety. This would definitely be a more acceptable pick than Kiper’s first-round pick, however, Rollins is projected to be more of free safety, and if we were to draft a safety it would be wiser to draft a strong safety type, who could back up the porcelain Louis Delmas.

To put it bluntly, I will say that I hope the Dolphins do not follow Kiper’s advice, because I definitely do not like his first-round pick at all, and his second-round pick is not even at a position of need. There are plenty of other very talented players that will be available for Miami when they are on the clock in the first and second rounds. What do the rest of the Miami Dolphin News fans think about Kiper’s “ideal” picks for the Phins?

      David Johnson is a possibility

      • Steve

I respect your opinion Jim Bo! But I will stick with David Johnson (He appears to keep himself from injury, I see a lunch box type player! He was the offense for his college team running back, receiver, kick returner.

This draft is not the year for 1st round running backs don’t believed the hype!
There are two Running backs that would fit the dolphins chemistry that is 1st David Johnson and 2nd Jeremy Langford I’m sold on both to help us defeat New England both games this season.

Dolphins can deal two picks in the 3rd and 4th round
Now our team can get their Running back in the 4th round.

112 Jeremy Langford RB 11 Michigan State Sr. 6-0 211

David Johnson the Best Running Back in the Draft Miami must reach for this Kid! I never believe the News Media its all about the rating! Really would like to see this kid a dolphin this season.

But David Johnson we need this Signature running back and I hope that the Dolphins will invite him for private work out prior to this draft.

I ask any fans to tell/show me any running back in this draft who can Run every down; Has breakaway speed as a receiver coming out of the back field and deep catches, Best kick off returner?

With no trading Miami may obtain maybe 3 of these players in the Draft! Which this draft we need 2 in the second and a 3rd round.

First round: 14th overall selection Camron Erving C FSU or Eddie Goldman, DT, 6-4, 336, 5.30, Jr, Florida State:

Second round: 47th overall selection Stephone Anthony, ILB, Clemson or Jalen Collins, CB, 6-1, 203, 4.48. Jr, LSU

Fourth round: 114th overall selection 120 *Jesse James TE 6 Penn State (We Need) or Steven Nelson CB Oregon state

Fifth round: 149th overall selection Jeremy Langford R/B or Michael Johnson

Fifth round: 150th overall selection Ramik Wilson, ILB, Georgia

Sixth round: 191th overall selection Deontay Greenberry, WR, Houston
Regardless to stay or trade out. These recruits can start this season maybe not day one

    • Dunner

Steve, are you serious about a C w/the 14th pick, or a DT. The only way they take a DT in the first is if it is Williams, and 99.9999% sure they do not take a center. You in line w/the second round, but I’m sorry not the first!

      • Jimmy Bourbon

I agree Dunner I would be shocked if the phins selected either a center or a dt

      • Steve

Dunner Irving from FSU started at defensive tackle who moved to Tackle and then ask to play Center. He was a starter in both position not certain on defense. Still he was offensive line captain this speaks volume for a 1st round pick.

Our offensive line is wounded and has holes that we must filled with the best linemen. We have enough 3rd, 4th round linemen who are not playing for what ever the reason.

        2. New England Patriots. Often overlooked as just a beefy extension of Tom Brady’s will and the Patriots Way, sometimes maligned by excellence-gorged Patriots fans who believe an electrified barbed-wire fence should be erected around His Infallible ship, the Patriots line quietly makes perennial 12-win seasons possible for a team that treats running backs like single-serving coffee pods.

At first glance, last year’s Patriots line performance does not look that great. Brady was sacked more than in any season since 2001, and both center Ryan Wendell and left tackle Nate Solder made more than their shares of mistakes in pass protection. Take a deeper look, however, and you see that the Patriots interchanged four running backs but still rushed for over 2,000 yards, and that life in the Patriots passing game was harder than it has been in over a decade because of injuries and defections among the receivers. In a season of change, the line was a stabilizing factor.

Steve except for your first round pick of Camron Erving I do like the picks, I would just substitute the center for a guard

      • Steve

Jim Bo! Camron Erving C FSU played Tackles then ask by his coach to switch to center plus he was offensive line captain, I would think playing guard would be less competitive for him? Also Jim Bo! is there a Guard without a reach should be taken in the 1st round?

  • Steve

Trade to spot 20th with the Eagle take: 1st round Camron Erving C FSU
    2nd round Stephone Anthony
4th round Jesse James TE 6 Penn State (We Need) or Steven Nelson CB Oregon
5th round Justin Cox Mississippi State
5th Nick O’Leary TE FSU or Charles Gaines CB
Sixth round: 191th overall selection Deontay Greenberry, WR, Houston

Scenario: 1 With a possible trade back with Eagle:
    Eagle should give up a
3rd 84th pick: David Johnson RB or Jeremy Langford RB
4th 113th pick: Steven Nelson CB Oregon or Tony Lippett WR Michigan State https://youtu.be/fI7N3YXpi74?t=41
6th 145th pick: Ramik Wilson ILB Georgia

I would have to say that I’m in opposition to the Miami Dolphins drafting a wide receiver in the 1st, 2nd or the 3rd round. When Offensive lineman Brandon Albert will not be healthy enough to make a different this season.

The fate of the Dolphins’ upcoming season might hinge on the strength and durability of Albert’s right knee, which sports a four-inch scar from surgery to his ACL last fall — his first surgery of any kind.

There is know downside to Coach Joe P. Moving back in the draft with the Eagle i.e any team and drafting 1.

I’m adamant that Miami best option to trade out 14th spot and take A NEED later in the 1st round i.e. Camron Erving C FSU who has proven that he can play Tackle, Center and the Guard position, Andrus Peat OT, Ereck Flowers OT or go defense for Eddie Goldman, DT, 6-4, 336, 5.30, Jr, Florida State:
THEN THE GUARD ISSUE IS FIXED!

I would not put too much credence into Mel Kiper’s predictions
I am sure our front office is much better equipped to figure out our needs than Mel is.
It is obvious that Mel is just filling a hole when it comes to predicting who the Dolphins need. He really does not know the inside scoop on the Dolphins.
But the misdirection is in a way helpful to keep the fins real choices secret, as they should be. Who is on our draft board should only be known by a handful of loyal Dolphins front office personnel.
I am sure the reality is much different than what Mel is predicting. It is obvious that if we were rumored to have talked to a few teams to find out what it takes to move up that we are not considering agholor as an option. Not even a dedicated fan would make that pick, at 14 much less our front office. We need in the first round a strong Guard or a great number one receiver, or Gurley just because he is so much better than the other picks that might be available at 14. Gurkley is not as much a need as the other 2 positions, but if the top 3 receivers are gone and so are the top 2 potential Guards then I can see us taking the best available player and that might be Gurley. But I also do not rule out a trade down because it makes so much sense if we can pick up an additional second rounder and there are several teams that would be extremely interested in taking Gurley if he is there at 14 and giving us their first and second picks. Dallas is one of them.Additionally we could still get Agholor plus an extra second rounder this way.
This is a very deep draft when it comes to receivers, and I am sure that if one of the top 3 is not there we would be happy to wait till the second round to get one of the next 12 receivers that are pretty close in skills after the initial 3 are gone.
I would not discount a Moreno signing after the draft if we do not get a stud running back in the draft. That is our ace in the hole, as far as that goes.
It is also possible we take a corner with our first pick at 14 if and only if the one that the front office has ranked as the best fit for our scheme is still there, and I do not know which one that is. There are potentially 3 excellent corners this year. I do not think the ones we have on our team right now will be a pro corner, they are serviceable and might do the trick for this year, but unless there is a tremendous leap forward by Taylor I see us looking for a new corner if not this year then next year for sure.
So that is my opinion, but like every one else there are many opinions and only one ultimately counts and that is Hickey’s. We don’t have long to find out now. I just want at least 3 quality starters from this draft, preferably at Guard, Receiver and one more either RB; LB; Corner; or safety. Whomever gets picked I am sure that it will be good solid picks as opposed to reaches as Ireland would have had. After all we can no longer reach or our coach looses his job at the end of the year. This is it. They must become a better team than 8-8 this year or heads will roll, and they know it. I predict several trades before we pick, and that is going to affect the draft board tremendously. We will have someone fall to 14 that other teams just cannot pass on. And we might just take that player too.

  • massdolphan

Kiper’s not the only pundit to miss on predicting the Phins draft picks. I watched the NFL Network’s draft show this past month and they just did not seem to understand the Phin’s needs. They did the same thing last year. I just don’t think NFL Network and ESPN respect the Phin’s at all, and don’t bother to do any due diligence in researching them. With Heath Evans obvious hatred for the Phins, plus this obvious lack of effort researching their draft strategy, both networks fail miserably.

    • Jimmy Bourbon

I would say a lot of pundits miss on the Dolphins, because we generally do a very good job at mis-direction in regards to the draft

  • tbone188

I thought D Shelton is DL but I would be thrilled if we took him in the first round. Can you imagine him with Suh?

  • I forgot these two offensive line choices. Danny Shelton and Brandon Scherff, both offensive line men. Help our offensive game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Give Tannahill time to throw and have a running game.

  • Comm’on, We need a running game!! Todd Gurley, or Melvin Williams. A offensive Guard and or tackle. That should be our priority!!! 2 pic’s Our 4th. 5th. and 6th. We should concentrate on our glaring needs. Re-sign NM. We had the ex Green bay receiver in our camp. What’s wrong with him??? We also can look at the Bengals TE. See if these people are available in the draft. Breshard Perriman WR, PJ Williams DT Oklahoma, Michael Bennett DT Wisc, Dennis Smith WR Ohio State, Jordan Philips Ohio State DT, Michael Darby Corner Florida State, How about Washington State defensive guard???BIG and FAST for his weight and size!!!! Stephan Anthony LB from Clemson. Maxx Williams TE GREAT HANDS AND A GREAT BLOCKER, There are plenty of choices for us to choose from.

    • Dunner

Believe you mean Melvin Gordon? The Fins should sit tight and let a RB fall to them rounds 3-5 (should we get a third round pick some how. That RB would be Tevin Coleman, he is a poor mans Gurley/Gordon. If things shake out right for him it could be the other way around. He’s that good!!!

      • Jimmy Bourbon

I agree Dunner, this is a deep running back class, we can definitely wait until the 3-5th round, and still get a quality guy
