Week 6: The Moment of Truth for Brian Flores

Week 6: Where the rubber meets the road for Brian Flores

During the Preseason, I circled Week 6 as the 2019 Phins ‘moment of truth’. Since then, the media and the vast majority of fans have married ‘Tank for Tua’ and the Miami Dolphins, so now this game’s ramifications go well beyond just the 2019 record. The stakes this week extend to the character and coaching acumen of Brian Flores and, if the regime is actually trying to lose, whether they will suck enough to get the top pick in next year’s draft.

No matter what you read, we can’t read minds. So, fans don’t really know what the intentions of this regime are. Not yet at least. But, what we do know is Brian Flores said that his team isn’t tanking: No ifs, ands, or buts. Either Flores is lying about tanking, misjudged the team’s ability, isn’t capable of coaching them up, or needed this bye week and less stiff competition to get on track.

The outcome of this game will reveal the truth.

Here’s what’s at stake with this coming Skins game
  • The Redskins are an equal disaster to the Phins… maybe worse. If Miami can’t win at home after a bye with a new coach running the Skins, the season is officially done. Also, they will very likely underperform the PPH bookie services prediction of 4.5 wins.
  • IF they are tanking, winning will put a serious crimp on the Phins ability to draft Tua without using extra capital. And, if ‘Tanking for Tua’ is THE plan, a win here could completely crush the season’s objective. Trade ups are never guaranteed.
  • IF the Dolphins lose this game, then either Flores is a liar about not tanking or can’t coach up the team in the most conducive of circumstances against an equally talent deprived team. This means fans can’t believe a word he says going forward or that the chances of him being a very good football mind are lowered. High picks or not, this doesn’t bode well for the future.
  • If Flores does win though and wins soundly, then maybe it was never a tank after all. It will take a few more wins to figure that out. Now, ‘Tanking for Tua’ may end up the right move should the Dolphins still lack an elite QB down the road. But in the meantime, plenty of writers will need to draft up their Mia Culpa about Flores being dishonest. Well, at least those with journalistic integrity.
Even bad Dolphins coaches and bad teams have had success after the Bye Week

Cheatsheet War Room is a great site for all ‘fantasy footballers’. They put together a great infographic on the Dolphins record after the bye week. You can check the full article of how all the NFL teams have faired after the bye here.

With the extra time to prepare Adam Gase and his terrible teams of 2017 and 2018 played well against two playoff-caliber teams on the road. Even ‘Philbust’ managed to get the Phins to be competitive in Green Bay. What will a loss say about Flores if he can’t get it done in an advantageous position against a broken team? Either he’s tanking and a liar or incompetent.

Also, this situation reveals a major problem with ‘Tanking for Tua’: The plan is a risky one. This risk isn’t about whether or not Tua will turn out elite. Rather, there are a ton of terrible teams and plenty of things can go wrong on the way to that #1 Pick. Miami will have to work overtime to lose this game and the one against the Bengals. If the Dolphins are tanking, why can’t the Skins and Bengals being ‘Tanking for Tua’ as well? One win could smash the whole plan, waste the season, and put this regime in a deep hole for nothing. And even if the tank is on with the staff, the players aren’t in on it. All it takes is one play to win a game. If this regime goes through all this and misses out on their ‘Golden Boy’, then what?

I don’t have all the answers, but I’ll have plenty of them after this game

For those who want and believe in the tank, this is a huge game. Those who don’t believe in or want the tank, this is a huge game. Either way, if you’re a Phins fan, this is must-see T.V. To be truthful, I just want Miami to get on the right track… whatever road that is. Go Phins!!!

It’s not fun seeing a team you’ve loved since 1973 be the laughing stock of the NFL. I am though putting faith in Dolphins to do this rebuild right. It will not work if you dont have a great QB. Could it be Rosen? Who knows but it starts and ends with a good QB.

Agree, Bret, on all accounts. BUT, it will take a good QB on a great team (a la Eagles) or a great QB on a good team. Either must be backed by a very good staff. That’s always the key… a very good staff. I might not like a tank now, but if we find an elite QB, I’m sure down the road I’ll be happy. What will never like is a bold-faced liar. If Flores is not tanking he must win this game. He has the advantage. IF he is tanking, it’s risky business to get Tua because there are a ton of poor teams… and I will need to view him as an ‘evil genius’. This week will be a strong reveal, Bret, on many fronts. I still believe he i trying to win and will win this week. But, we’ll see. As you said QBs are key. IF we get Tua and he is great I won’t mind a bit.

Flores is learning on the job. I don’t think he wants to lose. Grier stripped the team for picks and left Flores holding the bag. Flores accepted the deal and is a head coach before his time.
I don’t expect a good game. Two bottom feeders with more troubles than Joe Biden. It wouldn’t suprise me if the game ends 6 to 3 or a 6 to six tie.

“Flores is learning on the job. I don’t think he wants to lose. ” I agree

But, after watching the game last week and with all the adantage, Flores needs to win this one. He has the better team, is home, has rest and extra prep time, and the better O. Nah, he needs to win this one by 14 for me to have confidence for the future. Skins have a 3rd string QB… no sir. They need to win soundly or he sucks or is tanking.

I do think you score prediction will end up right, BUT, the skins lack lb and cb depth. Parker, Williams, and Albert with Rosen should find chunk yards more than the skins.
