Wake up and remember how to tackle!

Coming into the 2014 season it was supposed to be the new offense that was filled with question marks, but after the first Preseason game of the year it is the defense, which was supposed to be the strength of the team, that has left Phins fans scratching their heads.

The Defense has been good during training camp playing against their own offense, however when they finally had the chance to take the field against an opponent they seemed to have forgotten how to play football. Probably the most basic concept on defense that is sometimes overlooked, is that if you want to be a good defense, and force the offense to punt, then you first and foremost must tackle the ball carrier. That is football 101, and if a team fails to grasp this concept, then they are in store for a long season filled with 80-yard touchdown drives being scored against them. Luckily for the defense, they will have 3 more preseason games to remember how to tackle. Everyone on the defense is human, so it is ok and natural to make mistakes, but it is how the defense corrects those mistakes that counts the most. Hopefully, the defense’s lackluster performance in game 1 will spark some feelings of pride during this week’s practices, and the defenders will make it their number one priority to completely wrap up the ball carrier and take him down to the ground.

The count down to the season is quickly running down, so even though this is not a sky is falling type panic situation, it is still something that needs to be solved quickly before this team’s first game against a potential Super Bowl contender in the New England Patriots. In addition, the Dolphins should keep a plan B ready if Koa Misi can’t handle the responsibilities of the middle linebacking position. The middle linebacker is like the QB of the defense, diagnosing the offense’s formations, and calling plays to best prevent the offense from gaining first downs and touchdowns. Football betting software fans can not expect Misi to just be a natural at a position that he has never played in his life. Even if he eventually becomes the answer in the middle, it is not going to happen without some heartache. If Dennis Hickey is the GM that we hope he is, then he should already be browsing through the list of unsigned free-agent middle linebackers and hoping some type of acorn sized middle linebacker gets cut from one of the other 31 team’s 53 man rosters.

This LB corp is going to cost this team games this year. Tackling is an attitude. If you have to “coach” it…you’ve got big problems. D players personality / behavioral profiles are the best indicator for having a tackling attitude. This LB unit does not possess it.

Very good point, that tackling is an attitude and it is clear this LB unit does not have that attitude. Just look at some of the better LB unit in the league like the Seahawks, and 49ers, those guys tackle and play like someone just killed their dog
