Trade Up For Mayfield Is A Pipe Dream

Gase is crazy about Mayfield… but Miami isn’t moving up to get him

Mayfield may or may not be a star, but unless he falls to #11 he won’t be a Fin

The NFL Draft is just a month away. It’s the time of year where draft wishes, rumors, and smoke screens heat up. One rumor that’s going around is that Miami will trade up to select QB Baker Mayfield. This is music to many Phins fans ears because they desperately want to move on from Ryan Tannehill.

Reports are everywhere about Adam Gase’s man crush on Mayfield. Fact is, they are thoroughly kicking the tires on him… just in case Mayfield drops to #11. However, since the Jets trade up to the #3 spot, there’s a good chance that 3 or 4 QB’s will be gone in the Top 5.

This leaves Miami on the outside looking in.

Personally, I think 4 QB’s will go in the Top 10. The Giants, Broncos, Bills, and Cardinals are all interested in a QB. This makes it unlikely that either Rosen, Allen, Darnold, or Mayfield will make it to an idle Dolphins at #11. I can’t see both the Giants and Broncos passing on a QB as well as the Bills not having enough firepower to outbid the Fins. Then if you add in the Cardinals, who are within striking distance of the #7-10 picks, Miami needs to move up.

I guess it’s possible for Mayfield to fall, but I wouldn’t bet on it with the pay per head sites.

A QB is the most important position in the game… but it’s still a team game

So yes, all this talk of trading up makes sense… if they intend to go for broke on Mayfield.

However, a kamikaze trade up doesn’t make any sense for the vulnerable regime. Giving away that many valuable assets on a crapshoot will go a long way to getting them canned.

Yes, Miami does need a young QB on the roster.

Yup, they should draft one in this upcoming draft…

…But they are financially committed to Ryan Tannehill this year and next.

This regime can’t afford to bomb in 2018. So why sacrifice 3-4 shots at quality players to move up in the draft to get Mayfield? This added talent could save their necks.

Miami needs a Linebacker, Free Safety, Tight End, and DT… and more. The Jets gave up three 2nd Rd Picks to move up three spots. Trading up for the Phins means missing out on key needs in the 1st and 2nd Rd this year. It also means giving up a 1st and /or 2nd next year. And it could take even more than this, depending on how far the move is and how much the Bills are willing to give away.

Miami just doesn’t have the ammo.

I like the potential of Mayfield, but I don’t like the price it would take to trade up

Despite the success of the Eagles trade up to get a QB, these type of moves rarely work out. More often than not, teams that mortgage the future end up regretting it.

I personally like Mayfield and could see him being the pick at #11. But I’m not sold on enough to give away the farm on a player that will ride the bench for a season. While many may be happy to see the staff and Front Office get fired, I still believe there’s hope for this regime. Heck, like our reader Steve keeps preaching, maybe if Mayfield falls he’d be a great chip to get a trade back. It would be nice to see us start collecting extra picks for a change. What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins News fans thoughts about the Dolphins possibly trading up to draft Mayfield or another QB?

I like Faulk… they might have a shot to get him in the 3rd… White seems to be a better fit elsewhere… like the Pats.

Yeah, Steve… QB should come 3rd and beyond. I like White, but he is not too mobile and Gase isn’t down with those type of QB’s. Doubt he comes to South Florida—sadly, I can see him going to NE. They must find an LB, TE, and DT. Two of those will be addressed in the top 3 picks. I can’t see them taking a QB before the 4th. Too much talent with far better instant returns before then. I can see RB along with the other 3 being the top 4 picks with the second 4th being the QB… just my uninformed guess of course. I’ll check out the QBs. Still so busy studying Smith and Edmunds… still very concerned about him coming to Miami. They just don’t have the scheme or front or SLB to support him. When he gets turned to the Mike on calls he gets destroyed!!! He must play clean. Just not sure these DT’s will command a double… and then there is the wide scheme… which is a sieve for linemen. Both those in combination, especially in the nickel, will not let Smith be at his best and could make his pick take a year or two to reach its level. They might even need to change the scheme to suit him… I just can’t see him being the pick because of this. Edmunds would be such a better fit if they went Lb and he was available.

We need each player to just do their job. Suh was constantly double team and still someone was not doing their job. I would take a player who can just do their job on each down. Edmunds if not mistaken is still a teenager and ranked the top Linebacker? Smith will be a Pro Bowler for sure. We the Dolphins will benefit with either one.

        • admin

Yeah, Edmunds is… he is very raw but super physically talented. I’d much prefer him over Smith. I’ve watched many of his games now and some a couple of times. He is so terrible at getting off blocks that I don’t want him. I mean he is terrible. This Wide 9 leaves huge holes for the OL to get out… and if Smith is in the nickel he will be a major liability… I know it seems like hyperbole what I’m saying… but it isn’t he is one of the worst LB’s at being physical in this draft. Clean he is elite. But even TE’s dominate him and he has a tough go with WR. It seems he doesn’t like to get physical and just bails soon as it comes. The right scheme and personnel… he’ll do fine. But at this point, he will get victimized if not. Remember how kiko was in 2016 with suh and a poor #2 DT… bullied on every snap… and he’s Ray Lewis in comparision to Smith at shedding and being physical. He’ll have to play WLB… no way in hell he is a MLB. Again, though this is just my take…

        Hello Admin

Who is Texas Tech’s Nic Shimonek?
Nic! played behind Patrick Mahomed who was drafted by the Kansas City chief in 2017 draft who replaced QB Alex Smith.

I believe that Nic is that “Back up QB who can play behind Tennille with the intent to come in an eventually take the Dolphins to the Promised land. I’m not certain that Nic will be drafted in the 7 rounds of this 2018 draft. He has played against the two big name Quarterbacks.
Oklahoma State Baker Mayfield and Oklahoma State’s Mason Rudolph, I thought that NIc played very well against both national highly know quarterbacks.
Who is this Quarterback similar to Kirk Warner?

Shimonek (11 TDs, one interception) tops the Big 12 with 416 yards passing per game, while Rudolph (13 TDs, three interceptions) throws for 383 yards per game — they rank 3-4 nationally. Coutee leads the Big 12 with 9.3 catches and 148.7 yards receiving per game. While Washington only has 4.8 catches per game, he averages a league-high 27.4 yards per catch and is second in the league at 130 yards per game.

Just to re-enerate there’s other Coaches on the watch for Nic.

        Nic Shimonek, QB, Texas Tech
        Height: 6-3. Weight: 225. Hand: 9.25.
        40 Time: 4.86.
        Projected Round (2018): 5-FA.
3/10/18: Shimonek was the Red Raiders’ replacement for Pat Mahomes in 2017, and Shimonek had a quality year beating up on a conference that lacks defense. In 2017, he completed 67 percent of his passes for 3,963 yards with 33 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Some sources feel that Shimonek has arm talent and is an interesting prospect for the NFL.

Shimonek was the best quarterback prospect at the East-West Shrine and looked worthy of a late-round selection. He had a solid week of practice in St. Petersburg, and one general manager told me that Shimonek was, by far, his favorite quarterback there.

Base on the Shrine Game their were 11 Quarterbacks and Only one played well and the other had the best stats listed below.

Texas Tech’s Nic Shimonek had the best stats in the Shrine Game, going 12 of 18 for 105 yards and a touchdown, but was extremely inconsistent as a thrower and several completions were short throws.

        Shrine Game 2018

Quarterbacks struggled with multiple batted balls in each game. Of the 11 quarterbacks who played in Saturday’s two games, the one who had perhaps the best day was Arkansas’ Austin Allen.

The 6-1, 209-pound Allen showed some elusiveness in the pocket during the NFL PA Bowl and was accurate while going 6 of 9 for 75 yards. He made good decisions and completed several NFL throws.

Admin bringing aboard Austin Allen who may not get drafted but I believed he’s similar to Drew Breeze
        https://youtu.be/EHKTna3VadE

We have the opportunity to get Nic in the 5th round to un-drafted and picked up a second QB in
(Drew Breeze jr. Un-drafted Arkansas’ Austin Allen). Both has a lot to bring to the Miami Dolphins.

I would think we are building our future with these two on the roster and practice squad.
