The ‘Other Guy’ Who’s Not Getting Much Love

The Miami Dolphins in connection with Jordan Love haven’t received much ‘pub’

As the draft rushes closer and closer, the talk on which quarterback Miami will target goes round and round. Tua or Herbert, Herbert or Tua? Add in a dash of Miami forking over ‘five years’ worth of picks for Burrow and you have all the Phins QB talk? But, missing in all this speculation is a fourth QB that’s also expected to go in the first round. Even though the Utah State quarterback hasn’t been attached to the Dolphins much, I wonder does Jordan Love fit in Miami’s plans?

Tua has been the center of attention in Miami for two years. The reputed love Steven Ross has for Tua even spun the media-driven motto of “Tank for Tua” last season. But, after Tua’s ‘awkward’ meeting that he leaked to the public, the extra drama may be a sign that the destiny of Miami and Tua is fading.

Then there’s Herbert who has done everything to close the gap between him and the first tier of Burrow and Tua. Herbert’s MVP performance in the Senior Bowl and excellent combine showing was a great way to close out his resume. Was it lipstick on a pig or a sign of great things to come? there are many reports that Miami ‘loves’ them some Herbert…

… But, the first and only rule of the offseason: Listen to everything, believe nothing.

Could the real target of the Phins affection end up being Jordan Love?

For those who aren’t hip to Love’s college career, he had a down year in 2019. This year was way off his stellar 2018 season and cooled the hype train he was riding. Love fell short of expectations with only 61.9% completion percentage, 3,402 yards, 20 Touchdowns, and 17 interceptions. Compared to the year before it was quite a drop off with 64.0% completion percentage, 3,567 yards, 32 touchdowns and only 6 interceptions, and 7 rushing touchdowns.

To his credit, Love took the down year on the chin like a man. When asked about the reason for the drop in production, he said ‘those interceptions were on me’. To be fair to him, Love was in a brand new offense and lost a couple of his playmakers from the year before. That had to matter at least a little bit. No?!

Hey, the Bills drafted Josh Allen with a similar high interception to touchdown ratio in college and he has churned out two productive pro seasons. Some of Love’s biggest supporters even say the Dolphins should remember Dan Marino’s last season suffered similar scrutiny with 17 T.D.s and 23 Ints. Comparing Love to Marino is a bit of stretch, but there is a point to be made in this.

Many are comparing Love to a poor man’s Mahomes.

Every organization is now on the lookout for the ‘next Mahomes’ just as they were looking for the ‘next Marino’ after Marino exploded on the stage. Thing is, Marino and Mahomes are unique figures in NFL history and there isn’t the ‘next’ of either. So while Love and Mahomes share some similarities in their skillset, the key phrase in comparing the two is a ‘poor man’s Mahomes’. This wouldn’t be a bad ceiling and net result for Miami at all.

Interestingly, the primary person responsible for selecting Mahomes is now on the Dolphins. The best pay per head software bets provided by www.AcePerHead.com, that if anyone can evaluate Love properly it’s Phins Assistant General Manager Marvin Allen, who led the charge for Mahomes when he was with the Cheifs. Another interesting coincidence is Love is now being projected to go around where Mahomes was selected 10th Overall. Will history repeat itself, this time with the Phins winning the lottery?

There’s no doubt that Love has the look and feel of an NFL QB. Love has a very strong arm and makes those tough sideline passes look easy. But, he’s not a one-trick pony with a strong arm. Love has shown some very nice touch on deep balls, putting the ball where only his receiver has a chance on the ball. He also has a good pocket presence and a quick release. The primary knock on him is that he locks his eyes on his first read. This is the make or break point for Love in the NFL. Franchise QBs must be able to go through their progressions when the first read is covered. The good news is this skill can be taught.

Of the top four quarterbacks, Love has the biggest boom or bust potential.

Chan Gailey has worked with plenty of quarterbacks

When Chan Hailey was initially hired, there was some talk that he would be the perfect coach for Jordan Love. Here is an excellent article on his career history working with quarterbacks. Also, another connection is in college Love played in a similar type of Offense as Gailey’s.

With Love sitting behind Fitzpatrick for a season or two and running a familiar style offense, this could be the perfect setup for him. Mahomes also had similar circumstances when drafted. He learned behind veteran Alex Smith instead of being fed to the wolves in Year 1.

You never know, Love not getting linked to Miami could end up being a planned smokescreen. In this scenario, Miami could trade back a bit, let teams fight for Tua or Herbert, and still nab Love. What a masterpiece of Draft Day gamesmanship that would be? Makes me say, ‘hmm’?

What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins news fans’ thoughts about Love as an option at QB?

Love Has the talent that I don’t dispute but what possibly could be an issue is how Love handles adversity he was 15/30 and 130 yards against LSU, no touch downs that game vs LSU 42 to Utah State 6.

The Quarterbacks I listed above I’ve seen the toughness and the will to win against potent defensive. Too many fans talked smacked about players like Jalen Hurst but failed to realized what he has accomplished with Alabama and Oklahoma. I can understand that many fans don’t really care for Hurst but truth of the matter is don’t cry about we could have had him once he become one of the top QB’s in the NFL? I wish the Dolphins not to draft no players especially in the 1st round they don’t believed in. Its not good for the team nor the player.

But here’s the truth of the matter to many drafts the Dolphins have invested in players that were head scratcher’s?

    Hello Admin

Justin Herbert I thought handle Auburn Defense well and Oregon Defense was very good as well. Secondly I can’t say enough about Auburn Freshman QB Nix!

Auburn may have had the best defense in college 2019 season? They beat Bama, played LSU to the wire etc.

I’ve started to lie him more and more… but he seems a little wallflowerish.

Too draft a Quarterback in the top 10 a team would really have to love that player and if they cannot love the player then that player really have know chance on that team and it would be best to just passed on that player. I can’t say who the Fins need to draft but I do know the Fans deserved to watch prime time player going forward.

I saw this posting by Hyde it was just an scenario:

Hyde5: Should Dolphins be in on Dwayne Haskins or Taysom Hill
Hill is a different issue. As a restricted free-agent, he reportedly has had a first-round tender placed on him. So the Dolphins could offer a first-round pick for him and his contract (between $4 million and $6 million) and the Saints could match if they want.
Hill has been a multi-dimensional piece for New Orleans. He runs — 64 times for a 5.5-yard average the past two years.. He passes — he’s thrown six career passes. He even plays special teams.

Better Quarterbacks selected in the regular draft without trading away your picks etc.
Jalen Hurst Oklahoma (Mid Second Rounder)
Tyler Huntley Utah Quarterback (4th to 7th Rounder)

Jordan Love is a Dual threat QB I think who ever we draft most likely will learned from the bench the 1st season. Yes he had a down season and I’m not sure he has the will or the toughness of the QB’s listed below.

These QB’s listed below When the pocket collapses, scrambles to buy time “throwing on the run” Throwing on the run requires much practice and has a technique that goes along with it so the pass comes out perfect. And because dual-threat quarterbacks are mainly running around trying to extend plays to win games.

    Ranked 1st rounder: Justin Herbert

Hurts connected on downfield pass attempts almost at will and finished the year as the country’s 10th-ranked passer on all throws 10 or more yards downfield. Hurst brings leadership.

On all throws targeted at least 10 yards downfield, Huntley was the country’s fifth highest-graded quarterback and isolating even further downfield, on all throws at least 20 yards past the line of scrimmage, he was the nation’s sixth-ranked passer. He has every bit of arm talent to find all levels of the field and was truly dominant when given a chance to find his receivers on longer-developing pass attempts.

The players below are able to carry a team to victory by extending many plays, escaped sacks in college, against the dominate defensive.

Yeah, I think the “Marino” type of pocket passer is fading, but it’s not that an elite pocket passer can’t still do it, it’s just that mobility makes it easier. Need to look into these other QBs. Not sold on Love, but I am intrigued. A shame Herbert didn’t have more of an aggressive demeanor. But you can’t fake it in the NFL.

      • Steve

Yeah, the pocket passer is still I believed the better the problem I’ve notice! Is many of the pocket passers does very little to extend a play. El Way back in the day when needed to rushed the ball. Remember his Supper Bowl touchdown against the Packers?

    Hello Admin and Dol-Fans

Nice article on QB Love! Not to beat up on any QB but we cannot misread true talent. QB Love most certainly have the tools But I have not seen enough of Love to placed him in the 1st round. Yes many QB’s have down seasons. We can say our QB Josh Rosen Prospect Grade by the NFL USA Today was
6.70 prior to his draft day. He was projected a YEAR 1 QUALITY STARTER

He’s the best pure passer in this class thanks to his combination of height, arm strength and mechanics, which allows him to make every throw in an NFL playbook and The one concern is how he’ll deal with pressure at the next level. He rarely escaped sacks in college (not too big of a deal) and he had a hard time resetting his feet and making a throw after the defense forced him off his spot in the pocket (a much bigger deal).

Jimmy has me considering Love. One thing I don’t like though is the talk of him being antsy in the pocket. Still, I haven’t watch much film on him, so who knows if that’s true or not. Rosen had a very tough offense to learn with a disaster of a Oline. I’m not ready to say he’s a bust.
