The Controversial Pick

The Dolphins had a very good draft and most football gambling fans would say that they filled a lot of needs while at the same time picking some of the best players available on their board. Not only did they pick players at positions that they were in need of, but they selected players that best fit their scheme on both offense and defense, and just for good measure they selected high character tough football players.

However, the Dolphins did make a controversial pick in the second round when they decided to trade back with the Philadelphia Eagles and forgo selecting Denzel Perryman, and instead of selecting Jordan Phillips. For starters, the more pressing need was the linebacker position instead of the Defensive Tackle. The other big complaint was that Phillips has a reputation as being a lazy player, and even though he is the first-round talent, his work ethic was the reason for him slipping to the second round.

When I first saw that Miami selected Phillips, I will admit that I was extremely upset, because I really wanted Perryman, and I felt that with our second pick we needed to draft someone that was going to start and get a lot of snaps. However, after letting the selection settle in on my mind, it began to make a lot more sense, and I believe that it could actually work out very well.

The most important thing is that Phillips needs to realize that he is not in college anymore and he needs to get focused and remember that he has a job to do and many people are counting on him. He needs to get rid of that lazy stigma that he has earned and let players like Suh, Wake, and Vernon teach him the proper work ethic. If he can practice hard and do everything that the coaches and trainers want him to do, then the sky is the limit on his potential.

Phillips is a massive young man at 6’6”, 324 pounds and he is an athletic freak that once even did a standing backflip in college. He is extremely agile for such a large human being, and with the proper work ethic, he could become a force with Suh. The Dolphins also have Mitchell, however, he has spent most of his career as a rotational player, so I expect that the drafting of Phillips will mean that Mitchell and Phillips will rotate frequently this season. Also with having the luxury of playing next to a player such as Suh, who will be commanding constant double teams, it will allow both Phillips and Mitchell a better opportunity to flourish by taking on only one offensive lineman at a time.

Another point that got lost in the shuffle when the Dolphins decided to draft Phillips was that they also were able to add two extra fifth-round draft picks, which they used to draft CB Bobby McCain and CB/WR Tony Lippett. So if one of those two players can also prove to have a productive career with the Dolphins then that makes the Dolphins decision to trade back even wiser.

Lastly, you can never have enough big men clogging up the middle of your defense, so adding Phillips to a defensive interior that also has Suh, Mitchell, Johnson, and Francis will make this unit even deeper and more competitive. Lets not also forget that the Dolphins run defense was one of the biggest reasons why they fell apart at the end of the season. So it does make sense that the Dolphins would focus on getting more stout in the front line of the middle of the defense and adding Suh and a player like Phillips, who is a high risk, high reward player, is a good start to fixing a big problem from last year.
