The Case For Adam Gase Part 1: Demeanour

dt.common.streams.StreamServer

An immediate fire storm raged among the Miami faithful upon the hiring of Adam Gase. Calls of “Philbust 2.0”, just another “Yes Man” and such disparaging cries erupted before, and more so after, his press conference. Doubt, frustration, history all pooled into a volcano of angst brewing into near rebellion of the hire – but, beyond the emotion what is the reality of Adam Gase as the new Dolphins leader? I must admit, I also was hit by a resounding “Meh” over him becoming the Dolphins new head coach, but I decided to fight the tide and do my research and formulate my own opinion. I will write several articles that will work in tandem relating to the personality and the other X’s and O’s of Adam Gase.

With the understanding that all psychological observations are anecdotal (despite what the shrinks like you to believe), I’ll give my two cents backed by as many links as possible. This article might be dense and the reason for that is this is such a crucial step for all us fans that I’d like to offer as many bread crumbs as I can for my conclusion.

I believe the first point to tackle is that Adam Gase is “Philbust” 2.0. For your viewing pleasure I’d like to consider both coaches opening pressers which can be viewed here: Gase and Philbin.

Notice the distinct difference in presentation. Notice the difference in the relation between GM’s and Ross. Notice the pantomimes of discomfort of Philbin with spasmodic hand gestures, shrugging of shoulders, swaying and inability to hold his gaze on the person he is speaking to. Now compare it to the calm demeanor of Gase who eye locks the person he is speaking to.  Yes, he was offered to sit and the table did allow him hand and body cover that Philbin didn’t have, but the focus of eyes and attention to the questioner is stark.

As a man, I judge another man heavily on his ability to look at me when he speaks. I find it very uncomfortable to speak to someone who is talking to me and is looking everywhere else other than at me. I, without trying to inflate my nature, am an “Alpha Male”. I played ball, sought high adventure, was a bouncer, held posts in very insecure zones, am a trained fighter, and found my way through this life quite often through physical means…I generally have a brutes psychology – the essence of a football player. Philbin always jarred me – Gase on a personal level is engaging and doesn’t back down and on a surface level, I respect him.

Again, this is all anecdotal. BUT, if we dig further and compare Philbin’s inability to deal with “potent” personalities to Gase’s ability to be a “whisperer” to powerful (Manning) and difficult (Cutler) personalities, we see a wide chasm. Also, it’s interesting to note that Gase doesn’t simply “deal” with them, but rather gets them to feel strong passion and strong loss at separation. This is true charisma and people skills, and it doesn’t take the greatest sportsbooks in the world  to realize this is the heart of true coaching. It’s crucial for rich, powerful, uber men to see you as an equal or better yet a superior. His comment that players respect those who ‘can get them paid’ was one of the most spot one and honest quotes i have ever heard from a coach. Gase whether he succeeds or fails is a man with conviction (balls) to speak unflinchingly. That is light years away from “queasy” Philbin.

Now, this is a small part of the totality, but it is a crucial part. This doesn’t mean he is the next Lombardi, but it does ABSOLUTELY mean he is not Philbin on a personality level – at least in contrast to their pressers and history of player interaction. This aspect alone though offers hope that he has a chance. Ability to relate to the players and it’s heavy impact was demonstrated by Campbell. It alone was his asset and it alone was able to carry him to higher levels than Philbin.

    Hello Dolfans

Gase is the Coach now! I hope that Coach Gase, fair better than the prior coaches who failed. I fine it premature to judge his proficiency until his second or third season with the dolphins.

There are basically two leadership styles Authoritarianism and Democratic. I dont care what style he uses long as he wins.

Coach “Bill” Walsh San Francisco 49ers I heard him once say that The coaches who yell and scream at their player constantly were Immature and Chuck Nole was not the best media coach but he won super bowls.

    We

So far I like his coach selections. Looks Good!

can”t have everything! We are only asking” for a winning season”. This program will take about 3 years to see where we are headed. Miami has not won over 9 games in over 7 years.

Pf …ouch …your vitriol is showing again …turn the a/c on …cool you down a bit, eh

    …good post

…but I still have my doubts

…just plain old gut sick that Ross stuck with Tannenbaum

…Gase’s control over the 53 man roster is one thing …but its not control of the draft or free agency

…Tannenbaum has that now with Hickey out of the way …and Gase reports to Tannenbaum now, not Ross

…I hope Gase is a good HC …but imnsho, Philbin was only a part of the fin’s problems and not the largest part by far

…really hope I’m wrong …I’d love to live to see another fins SB

Despite freaks usual…I am not at this point saying he is Lombardi. The article and my judgement at this point is saying he is not Philbin. I don’t know what this specific aspect will translate into, BUT his persona is NOT Philbin.

Again, this article’s premise is pure unadulterated stupidity. To suggest you or anyone can evaluate or even pass judgement on the efficacy of a HC by his press conference demeanor and whether he looks you in the eye etc. is pure hogwash and amature writing.

There is nothing, nothing, to suggest Gase will be successful here based on his interview, nor his demeanor. In fact, I personally dont like his demeanor, nor any of his answers.

Im friggin tired of the canned responses like ” …the process…” and “…evaluate what tannehill is good at…” etc.

What fucking specifics did this clown give regarding his so called “vision”? What is his player personnel vision? What is his assessment of this roster? besides the stale “…Ive only seen tannehill once during preseason while at Denver…’ bullshit?

Keep drinking your kool aid mates.

You wanna see a friggin loser on TV? watch Tannenbaum. He’s a perfect example of a wannabee.

Freak, unadulterated stupidity is not dealing with the context of the article…speaking of canned responses you have your share. Actually speak on the article and I respond to your unadulterated stupidity. If you lack the acumen to respond then so be it… gauntlet is thrown – respond or shut up.

Freak, there is nothing, nothing suggesting that Gase will not be successful either! AND, you nor anyone else can make a valid assessment from his demeanor, if that were the case Billacheat would be a horrible coach as well. But, I’m sure if Billacheat became the HC here you would be saying the same thing. Freak, I am not sure who you are a fan of (besides yourself), can’t be Miami, go and gloat about your great f***ing team and coach somewhere else. Until proven other wise Gase is what we need (other 7 teams in need of a coach wanted him as well, but I’m sure they know nothing either) and will be successful. Kool-Aid or no Kool-Aid

The specific area of stupidity I point to is your passing judgement on the quality of, in this context, Coach Gase, based upon if a person looks at you when speaking, his mannerisms compared to Philbins pressers, demeanor, etc. Plain and simple stupidity. This means nothing in the NFL. You cant judge a HC on any of this.

Also, you refer to Gase as a “whisperer” because he was QB/OC with Peyton Manning, who is more of a OC than Gase given Manning called his own plays and ran the old Colts’ offense -this is quite a stretch – stupid stretch given what I just wrote.

And to further the stupidity – Gase worked no miracle with Jay Cutler. For context, simply look up the Bears’ offensive ranking and production. AGain an example of stupidity woven throughout your article. He did nothing with Peyton, nor did he whisper anything with Cutler.

What has Gase accomplished as a result of his coaching acumen? What years of experience does he bring as head of anything at any level? What QB did he develop? Nobody – thats a fact.

The only reason Gase got this job, is because he sang the “…we can win with Tannehill…” song. Philbin wanted to move on from Tannehill, in fact reports are that Philbin wanted to move up in the draft to take Derek Carr – this got him fired ASAP especially since Tannebaum decided to pay Tannehill franchise cash.

The last thing the kiss ass Tannenbaum wanted around was a HC that illuminated his own incompetence by suggesting they move on from Tannehill. Thus the final straw in the firing decision.

In the end, the glaring stupidity of this article is to suggest anything relating to Gase’s competence based on the items you point to…which is primarily at demeanor during a presser. Peyton Manning was a pro bowl hall of famer before he got to Denver. And what you found out when you looked up the Bears offense, is that Gase did nothing there that impacted that team either.

Ill stop here. So much for your gauntlet. Tss

        • Dunner

Oh excuse me, I didn’t know you were at the press conference Freak and spoke w him.
How good has Manning looked this year without Gase? Career high #s w Gase!
Cutler just had his best QBR in his career w Gase!
Gase won w Tebow when know one else has been able to!
Gase has not had the opportunity to develop a new QB, he creates succesful schemes with whom he has.
Gase did not sing the “win w Tanny” song, he explained that he can win with anyone, just happens to be Tanny.

I’ll stop there, it is just as much a great hire as it a disappointing one.

        • M.J.

“The only reason Gase got this job, is because he sang the “…we can win with Tannehill…” song.”

          ZERO EVIDENCE FOR THAT STATEMENT.

“The last thing the kiss ass Tannenbaum wanted around was a HC that illuminated his own incompetence by suggesting they move on from Tannehill. Thus the final straw in the firing decision.”

          ZERO EVIDENCE FOR THAT STATEMENT

NOT MENTIONED IN THE ARTICLE IN EITHER WORD OR TOPIC. AGAIN LACK OF READING COMPREHENSION.

“And to further the stupidity – Gase worked no miracle with Jay Cutler. For context, simply look up the Bears’ offensive ranking and production. AGain an example of stupidity woven throughout your article. He did nothing with Peyton, nor did he whisper anything with Cutler.”
          DEFINITION OF WHIPERER: 2.
a person skilled in taming or training a specified kind of animal, typically using body language and gentle vocal encouragement rather than physical contact.
It about communication…the word miracle isn’t in article: LACK OF VOCABULARY AND READING COMPREHENSION ON YOUR END. AGAIN YOUR IGNORANCE SHINES. CUTLER WAS CONSIDERED GONE THIS SEASON BECAUSE OF HIS INABILITY TO CONTROL HIS GAME. ONE SEASON WITH GASE AND BEARS ARE GOING TO KEEP HIM, CUTLER HAS HAD HIS MOST CONSERVATIVE YEAR AND PINES THE LOSS OF GASE.

“The specific area of stupidity I point to is your passing judgement on the quality of, in this context, Coach Gase, based upon if a person looks at you when speaking, his mannerisms compared to Philbins pressers, demeanor, etc. Plain and simple stupidity. THERE ARE WHOLE SCIENCES BASED ON NON_VERBAL COMMUNICATION IN FACT MOST CAREERS THAT DEAL WITH SOCIAL INTERACTION DEAL WITH NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION – THIS MIGHT BE YOUR MOST IDIOTIC STATEMENT TO DATE. AGAIN, VOCABULARY ISN’T WHAT YOU WANT IT TO BE.

          DEMEANOR: outward behavior or bearing.
          “a quiet, somber demeanor”
synonyms: manner, air, attitude, appearance, look; More

IF YOU HAVE EVER PLAYED FOOTBALL…AND I DOUBT IT, THEN YOU WOULD NEVER MAKE THAT STATEMENT ABOUT HOW A COACHES’ DEMEANOR AFFECTS A TEAM AND IT’S PLAY.

“Also, you refer to Gase as a “whisperer” because he was QB/OC with Peyton Manning, who is more of a OC than Gase given Manning called his own plays and ran the old Colts’ offense -this is quite a stretch – stupid stretch given what I just wrote.”

AGAIN, YOU DON”T UNDERSTAND WHISPERER. SECOND, HE TURNED MANNING’S OFFENSE INTO A RUN FIRST O IN HIS SECOND SEASON AS OC HALF WAY THROUGH THE SEASON AND MANNING BOUGHT INTO IT – THAT WASN’T AN EASY SELL. THIRD HE MENTIONS THAT VERY THING ABOUT MANNING ABILITY TO ADJUST, YET MANNING STILL HAS A DEEP PASSION, RESPECT FOR HIM AND SAYS HE IS THE SMARTEST GUY IN THE ROOM. YOU I’M SURE KNOW MORE.

IN ESSENCE YOU ARE A LOUDMOUTH WHO I DOUBT EVER EVEN PLAYED PEE WEE BALL AND ARE SO INSECURE THAT YOU HAVE ZERO ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE WITHOUT DISPARAGING COMMENTS. YOU’RE THE KIND OF GUY WHO THINK, “HE WHO YELLS LOUDEST IS RIGHT”. YOU CAN PULL THAT GAUNTLET OUT OF YOUR ARSE…MATE!
