Statement Signing

The Dolphins will be entering the 2015 free-agent signing period with only a few million dollars worth of cap room, but they have many players on the roster that will, and should be released, which will quickly add necessary cap room for the Dolphins to make a run at a prized free agent. Below is a list of some of the top free agents to hit the market in March:

DeMarco Murray RB   Demaryius Thomas WR   Dez Bryant WR    Julius Thomas TE    Mike Iupati G    Jason Pierre-Paul DE

Ndamukong Suh DT    Justin Houston OLB    Rolando McClain ILB   Darrelle Revis CB  Devin McCourty S    Justin Tucker K

Any of these players on this list would immediately be an upgrade at each position for the Dolphins. Obviously the Dolphins have a few important needs such as Linebacker, Defensive Tackle, Guard, Corner Back, Safety, and Wide Receiver. The Dolphins can probably afford, and try to make a full-court press on one of these above players.

I would love to get Bryant or Demaryius and then get rid of Hartline, Gibson, and Wallace, but most football gambling fans are betting that the Cowboys and Broncos are going to try extremely hard to keep their respective players. The Cowboys will have a very tough decision, and probably will not be able to afford to keep Murray and Bryant, but sources are telling me they are leaning more on keeping Bryant than Murray. Miami is not going to go after Murray considering they have Miller and can find a running back in the upcoming draft.

The two most sensible players to chase after on this list would be Suh and Iupati. Both will fill huge holes and would immediately upgrade the offensive or defensive line units. Today I would like to focus on the benefits of Suh, but another day we will go over the benefits of Iupati.

Suh is going to demand a huge contract, and the Lions could decide to put the franchise tag on him, but that would cost them around $26 million just for the 2015 season. Most Free Bookie Software fans would wager that the Lions are not going to allocate that much money to Suh this season, so either they need to find a way to resign him for a massive amount of money, or to let him test the free-agent market.

Assuming the Lions will let him test the market, then Miami needs to be one of the teams in the bidding. Suh is one of the best, and if not the best defensive tackles in the game. He had 53 tackles last year and 8.5 sacks and constantly needed two players to block him. He has a reputation around the league for being a dirty player, however, I think a more fair assessment is that he is a tenacious player with a lot of passion for the game, but sometimes lets his emotions cloud his decision making. In addition, Suh spearheaded a rush defense that was ranked first in the league and was only allowing 69.3 yards per game, which was 10 yards better than the 2nd ranked Broncos (79.8). Compare that to a Miami team that was ranked 24th worst against the run and allowed 121.1 yards per game on the ground.

Suh will immediately make Miami better against the run, and he also gives them an extra quality pass rusher in the middle of the trenches, which is not something that is easy to find. This would also mean that Miami can release both Starks and Odrick, but still be able to get better at the position. The biggest issue on defense at the moment for the Dolphins is stopping the run, so why not go after the biggest and best DT in the free-agent market, and fix their biggest problem with a signature on a check with a bunch of zeros on it?

I have been saying all along, PLEASE/PLEASE go out and get Suh!!! He automatically makes every player on the defensive side of the ball better. And yes, I mean everyone of them. How about freeing up Wake and Vernon, giving them an opportunity to work one-on-one. Should someone step up opposite Grimes (not that Grimes needs any help), their level of play would go up, the safeties would benefit. Everyone benefits. Our defense would finally have a identity, this defense could go from a soft vanilla defense to a more ferocious suffocating defense, a tenacious defense, how long has it been since you could say that about a Miami defense, (70’s, early 80’s), all do to one player, one signing. I know it may be had to believe, but that would be the realistic results from such signing.
Ross needs to be behind this signing, show your Dolphin fans that you are serious about getting to the next level and staying there, about finally overcoming the Patriots dominance of the AFC East, and don’t think that Buffalo is not going to contend next year (they have already gotten better this off-season and free agency hasn’t even started).
Season tickets sales would increase with this kind of move.
Sign Suh and all the sudden this team takes on a whole new identity, a whole new perspective. Hickey has a chance to significantly influence this organization for years in only his second year. And that doesn’t even include the draft outcome.
    SIGN SUH!!!!!!!!!!!!

This reminds me of the eighteen year old walking through the Ferrari showroom saying if he gets rid of his 96 mustang and stops eating he might can afford one. I am not sure these “superstars” will do all tat much–Wallace didn,t. I do believe the draft is the way to go.

Yes I agree the draft is the way to go, but we can still get a solid free agent, a guy like Suh or Iupati will not be a bust no matter where the go

While I do agree that stopping the run is our biggest issue, I don’t agree it’s because of our Defensive line. I believe a lot of our problems stem from horrible gap discipline from our linebackers. Yes, our linebacking corp was riddled with injuries but Wheeler is not cutting it and Ellerbe is playing below par. We did find a diamond in the rough with Jenkins but he needs help. We need a true MLB and move Ellerbe and Jenkins outside.

I agree that we definitely need to find a true middle linebacker and building around Jenkins is the way to go, but still need a beast of a man at DT, like we used to have with Soliai. It is no surprise that Miamis rush defense was very stout over the last few seasons when Soliai was healthy and in the lineup. Mitchell is not comparable to Soliai and its clear we someone on the level of Soliai in order to be better against the run. When it takes two offensive players to block one DT then that creates room for other defenders to be in position to make a play on the ball carrier
