Smart Phins Roll Dice On DT Nkemdiche

Nkemdiche is very talented and very incosistent

The Miami Dolphins are rolling the dice on another talented player who hasn’t ‘gotten’ it right. Defensive Tackle Robert Nkemdiche is the second underachieving 1st Round Arizona Cardinal draft pick on the squad now. Miami placed him on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform List as he recovers from a torn ACL.

At just 24 years old and blessed with tremendous physical talent you can’t fault Chris Grier and Brian Flores for taking a flyer on Nkemdich. His ‘rent to buy’ contract of a one-year $1.16 million dollar contract is a ‘steal’ for an 8-game tryout.

But fans need to be clear Nkemdiche underachieved in a big way.

Over his first 3 seasons, Nkemdiche has only played in 27 out of 48 games. And out of those 27 games, he has only started 6.

On the good side of the 10 games he played and 6 he started in 2018, he was very, very effective. Despite limited action, Nkemdiche managed 32 tackles with 22 solos, 4.5 sacks, 9 Tackles for a loss, 7 Qb hits, and a forced fumble. Impressive!

When on and healthy, Nkemdiche is elite

The kid is undoubtedly talented. But, is Nkemdiche snake bitten with injuries? Does he have commitment and discipline to match his talent?

Miami has a dozen of these types of reclamation players. If they can hit on even a few, the 2020 roster will be primed with all the picks the Phins have.

Again, the low cost, high reward is always a winner with the pay per head software like www.AcePerHead.com… however, it pans out.

Why you might ask would this be a winner even if Nkemdiche doesn’t cut the mustard?

The right process doesn’t always create the right results short term, but over the long haul, it sure as hell does

Grier and Flores are sticking with the process they installed: competition, frugal spending, rolling dice of these types of players, Cap responsibility, development, and patience in all things.

Grier and Flores have held to this process at every turn. For an inconsistent franchise, their consistency is the foundation for everything else.

Laremy Tunsil is a former Ole’ Miss teammate of Robert Nkemdiche’s. This is an excellent connection to rebuild Nkemdiche. He likely won’t show till Week 8. This will light a fire on the young DT’s, offer calvary mid-season (or sooner), provide an opportunity for a steal inside, and keep the mantra of competition.

Winning.

I wasn’t a fan of signing him when he was released, but the uber-cheap price pulled me on board fast. Also, if he comes in midway through the season, it will allow Flores to evaluate what he has in the other DTs without releasing a possible good player for nothing should Nkemdiche flop.

Informed decisions are tight!

A nice cherry on top of tonight’s game. No?! Why do I hear the Twilight Zone music? Go Phins!!!
