Quinn May End Up Making Phins Look Smart

Quinn was decent with the Rams as a 3-4 Outside Linebacker in 2017…

…But Quinn appears in better form as a Defensive End for the Phins

The Miami Dolphins made a few trades this offseason to bring in the experience that a draft pick lacks. Even though it’s just minicamp, one of those trades, Defensive End Robert Quinn, is making waves with his production.

Yeah, with no pads on, minicamp is glorified flag football. It’s early June, folks… I know. But what else is there for a die-hard Miami Dolphins News fan to sink their teeth into?

Beyond the snarkiness, good signs are better than bad ones. And Quinn is involved with both good and bad signs in minicamp.

It’s great news that Quinn has been a beast and getting to the QB. The flip side is he’s been beating Laremy Tunsil like a drum to do it.

The pass rushing being effective is music to my ears–minus Tunsil getting victimized, of course. Last year Miami was near the bottom of the league in team sacks. In 2017 they only had 30 sacks total, which was tied for 26th worst in the NFL. So an improvement in pressuring opposing QB is a must… if Miami wants to succeed in 2018.

If Quinn can get double-digit sacks, then the 4th Rd pick to get him will be a bargain

The fact is: Good teams have a defense that pressures QBs and creates sacks. Last year, the top 5 teams in sacks all made the Playoffs. A good way to improve a team’s odds of winning with the best bookie website software is improving the pass rush.

Sacks are often driving killing plays and can win ball games

So even though it’s early, I won’t complain about hearing good things about Quinn. The only downside is been it’s at the expense of Tunsil. But maybe this will help Tunsil improve… fingers crossed. Right?! Back to a good note. Quinn isn’t a rookie. He’s a 7-year vet and former Pro Bowler that’s put up double-digit sacks. So I lean towards this being the real deal, more than the poor play of his opponent.

But, to be objective, it has been a while since the double-digit sack seasons. The last time Quinn had double-digit sacks was in 2014 when he had 10.5. He followed it up with missing games and battling injuries in 2015 and 2016. Last year he was able to stay healthy and played in 15 games, racking up 8.5 sacks. He did play as an Outside Linebacker in a 3-4, so his potential might have been limited. This could bode well for Miami and Quinn’s return to Defensive End.

Hopefully, this impressive start is the beginning of Quinn’s return to Pro Bowl form. It’ll be exciting to see how he progresses. Will this end up a winning trade? That’s the $11.5 million dollar question. Go Phins!!!
