Pro Bowl Guard Evan Mathis coming to the Phins?

The Philadelphia Eagles have salary cap issues this year and one player who could be directly effect is their Pro Bowl guard Evan Mathis. He is a 32 year old Guard that Profootballfocus ranks as the best guard in the NFL, but he is due a base salary of $5.15 million this season, $5.5 million in 2015 and $6million in 2016 when he will turn 35. Most Pay per head sites like Ace Per Head fans would say that is a pretty steep price to pay for an aging guard.

As a result the Eagles have reported that they are willing to start accepting trade offers for him. The problem for the Eagles is that the rest of the teams in the league know that the Eagles need to clear some cap space, so they might decide to wait and see if he will be cut instead, which I am told is a distinct possibility.

So now phins fans may be asking what does all this mean to the Dolphins. Well for starters it is clear that the Dolphins still need a starting guard, and what better way to fill the spot then with a Pro Bowl caliber player. For many years the Dolphins and Jeff Ireland went with the cheap way of paying lower salaries to second and even third tier players, and I think it is pretty obvious what that strategy has produced, which is sub-par records, and no meaningful games in January. It would be a real welcomed move if new GM Dennis Hickey went out, and got a Pro Bowl player at a position that is a very high need for the team. Obviously the price has to be right, in both dollar amounts and or draft pick compensation. Hickey should not offer anything better than a 4th rounder, especially considering this is a very deep draft. I would actual welcome the move, and load it with incentives and pay him quality money. If we want a top tier talent in this league we need to spend the money for it. Talk about a quality boob job style plastic surgery. If the phins can find a way to add Mathis, then that would be the second Pro Bowler added to our offensive line this off-season, and some football gambling fans would say that this may be the difference in the Phins finally making the playoffs next season.
