Picking CBs: Jackson or Flowers?

The Dolphins are entering a playoff or bust season and work is already being put in to upgrade this team to a playoff status team. There are a few positions that the Phins must improve in and one of those is the cornerback position. Most football gambling fans would say that the Dolphins already have one of the top 5 cover corners in the game in Brent Grimes. Now they just need to find someone that is capable enough to cover the opposite side of the field that can replace Cortland Finnegan, who was just released to create more than $5 million in cap room. There are some big names out there like Darrelle Revis, who I would love, but is probably too expensive. The Dolphins may try to draft a cornerback, however, this regime has drafted 3 corners so far (Aiken, Taylor, and Davis) and none of them have played well enough to feel comfortable about them starting, so the wise move would be to sign an established veteran in free agency.

Two corner-backs that are generating a lot of noise in the Miami Organization are Kareem Jackson from the Houston Texans and Brandon Flowers from the San Diego Chargers. Both of these players would be considered an upgrade for Miami, and would also allow them to give their other young corners on the team one more season to prove if they can “turn the corner.”

Jackson played in 13 games last season and was able to come down with 3 interceptions, 57 tackles, 9 passes defended and allowed a QB rating of only 74.1 against him. He has been in the league for 5 years and is 26 years old, and many pay per head reviews believe he has the ability to be one of the better number two corners in the league, which could mean he could prosper from being the opposite of Grimes.

Flowers has very similar statistics last year with 3 interceptions, 52 tackles, 10 passes defended in 14 games last season, and allowed a QB rating of only 84.2 against him. He has been in the league longer with 7 years under his belt and just turned 29. He is born and raised in Delray Beach and has personally expressed interest in having the opportunity to play at home with the Miami Dolphins. The one knock on Flowers is that he is more of a scheme corner-back, so if Coyle does not use him the way he has been used in San Diego, then he may not have as much success.

Both players are quality corners in the NFL, so either one would be an upgrade, and also allow us to use our precious draft picks on other positions of need. However, if I had to choose one player over the other I would choose Jackson, because he is younger, and is the better pure cover corner of the two players. What does the rest of Miami Dolphins news fans think about these two players, and which would you prefer if you had to make the executive decision?

We will have a much clearer picture before the draft, as a some answers should come via free agency. For me Jackson is the corner I am hoping we get. Mainly because of his age and history. However; Flowers is still young enough to get 3-4 good years out of him, and he is a local boy. I don’t think we can go wrong with either corner, just hope we can land one of them. I keep seeing where the so called experts have Miami as one of the potential landing spots for Shu. As much as I would love for that to happen, I just wonder if that happens, will we be able to pick up any other free agents. Either way, I would take Shu in a heart beat. Instant top 5 defense as is!

The Dolphins just cleared around 12-15 million in cap space and if they get rid of Wallace that will be around 20 this could all be part of their plan to sign Suh. Yes I agree Jackson or Flowers would be a great addition, either one will do

Jimmy, I believe more moves are to come (Ellerbe, Wheeler, Starks, Wallace). As much as I want Shu, would love Shu actually (even more so, now that Buffalo has McCoy), I believe that a corner, LBer and WR is needed through free agency (possibly safety also). With such a move, would we still be able to land at least 1 if not 2 of those needs? Then again, I guess if we do land Shu, we would not only be able to cut Starks, but let Odrick walk also, which could allow us to land the other 2 needs via free agency.
Know I’m going to catch a lot of slack for this, but: if we land Shu and either Jackson or Flowers our playoff drought will end and we WILL be in the playoffs…

Well i think with the Bills getting McCoy, now we definitely need a player like Suh to anchor the run defense. Yes Ellerbe, Wheeler and Starks will most likely be gone. I would like to get rid of Wallace, and if we get Suh, then we can also allow Odrick to walk, which after all these player subtractions we will have plenty more space to sign a corner back in free agency, and then can target WR, LB, G in the draft. I would love to get Suh and one of the stud corners, this will go a long way in tightening up the defense and will allow us to concentrate on other positions in the draft

Agree that Corner should be one of two maybe three positions to get in free agency
some draft experts don’t see any CB drafted till after the 22nd pick
That tells us that there are no consensus top 10 players as CB’s
unlike other years there really is no guaranteed corner that will make an impact on this years draft
Therefore getting a proven CB in free agency is the logical thing to do given that there are so many other holes we must fill and this year we just have to make sure that the first two or three picks absolutely become starters right away.
It makes more sense to go after a LB or receiver with our first pick
LB because we all know that the 2 LB’s that Ireland got in free agency are not good enough and we just have to get at least one that can start and make an impact immediately
Receiver because having cut Gibson and Hartline we really only have three left Mathews, Wallace and Landry
Wallace is too expensive, a Diva, and is not a good fit for this team. – He will not be a Dolphin this year. He will be traded or cut either before or after the draft.
So that is why we need to draft LB and Receiver this time around as our top 2 picks
We must try to land a safety; a Corner and a DT in free agency if we can
The last position we need is RB to complement Miller. We can go either way with that – 3rd or 4th round or free agency if there is a proven RB for 3 Million or less available.
That is what I would try to do if I was the GM which I am not so I am sure there is a different plan in place and we will find out what it is after the draft. Hickey has shown he is a better talent evaluator than Ireland so we are in better hands than in the last regime.

I agree 100% LB and WR should be our first and second round picks, and RB and DT are both deep in this draft so we can get them as well in the 3rd and 4th
