Phins ‘Shortchanged’ on Compensatory Picks

Phins compensatory picks were not as good as hoped

The NFL has awarded their annual compensatory picks and Miami received a 4th and 7th round pick for the loss of Cameron Wake and Ja’Wuan James. Something is better than nothing and beggers can’t be choosers… I guess. Still, it feels like the Phins were mugged.

There’s no crying in football and the ‘formula’ is what it is. So Chris Grier will have to make the best with the picks given. But, the expected 3rd and 5th Round picks would have given the Phins much better ammo in this draft. Maybe because the Patriots killed it in their awards and are walking away with two 3rd and two 6th round picks is why it feels like a robbery?

Injury-prone James bit Miami in the rear one last time by going down with a knee injury in Week 1 last season. The reduced time on the field was the reason for the drop from the expected 3rd round pick down to the 4th round. This was a substantial drop as the pick moved the Phins from the early 90ish overall to the 141st pick in the draft. Still, there is plenty of opportunities to win with this pick. One example of a team winning with a 4th round compensatory pick is the Dallas Cowboys who drafted Dak Prescott with their 4th round compensatory pick.

The expected (hoped for) list of picks
  • 1st-round pick (5th overall)
  • 1st-round pick (18th overall)
  • 1st-round pick (27th overall)
  • 2nd-round pick (39th overall)
  • 2nd-round pick (56th overall)
  • 3rd-round pick (70th overall)
  • 3rd-round pick (Comp – Ja’Wuan James)
  • 4th-round pick (135 overall)
  • 5th-round pick (152 overall)
  • 5th-round pick (162 overall)
  • 5th-round pick (173 overall)
  • 5th-round pick (Comp – Cam Wake)
  • 6th-round pick (185 overall)
  • 6th-round pick (197 overall)
  • 7th-round pick (246 overall)
The Phins picks post compensatory awards
  • 1st-round pick (5th overall)
  • 1st-round pick (18th overall)
  • 1st-round pick (27th overall)
  • 2nd-round pick (39th overall)
  • 2nd-round pick (56th overall)
  • 3rd-round pick(70th overall)
  • 4th-round pick (135 overall)
  • 4th-round pick (Comp – Ja’Wuan James 141st overall)
  • 5th-round pick (152 overall)
  • 5th-round pick (162 overall)
  • 5th-round pick (173 overall)
  • 6th-round pick (185 overall)
  • 6th-round pick (197 overall)
  • 7th-round pick (246 overall)
  • 7th-round pick (Comp – Cam Wake 251st overall)
Phins have 15 picks in total for the 2020 Draft

Yes, Miami has a ton of picks, but they have a long lull where most teams will draft twice before they do from the 71st-140th pick. This is a critical area where plenty of quality players can still be had. Given that more than half of their picks are at the tail end of the draft, trading up with some of them might be wise…

Or maybe trading down with one of their Top 5 picks to acquire more picks to fill the gap might even be better?

You can bet with the pay per head bookie sites like AcePerHead.com that Chris Grier has enough ammo to do whatever they want. So I’m not diminishing the huge haul they have, but the missing 3rd rounder does take a bit of the shine off.

The tail-end of Phins’ 2019 Draft

  • Round 5, Pick 13 (No. 151 overall): Andrew Van Ginkel, LB
  • Round 6, Pick 30 (No. 202 overall): Isaiah Prince, T
  • Round 7, Pick 19 (No. 233 overall): Chandler Cox, RB
  • Round 7, Pick 20 (No. 234 overall): Myles Gaskin, RB

This was a decent haul from the last day of the draft in 2019… if Gaskin, Van Ginkel, and Cox continue to develop. So, maybe Miami will be fine where they are. We’ll find out soon enough. Go Phins!!!

Linebacker’s who can we trust, cover sideline to sideline, run stopper, pass defender, captain in that position?

    1. Kenneth Murray linebacker OK https://youtu.be/ihyr5phYmqs ;https://youtu.be/TzxvZnGE_SUints (2019 much responsibility was placed on Murrays shoulders which he prevailed).
    2. EVANS WEAVER, LB, California https://youtu.be/d13Z-MaE6a8 (Basically a punisher)

All the defense what do we need vs what we want?

    ISAIAH SIMMONS OR DERRICK BROWN?

    ISAIAH SIMMONS:
Blitz packages that are designed specifically for him.
Most importantly, though, he would be able to help cover today’s ultra-athletic tight ends.
    A Sideline to Sideline linebacker.
Simmons could bulk up a bit and be a more prototypical linebacker in their gap-control defense.
Then again, why pigeonhole such a versatile player?

    DERRICK BROWN:

Physically, the senior holds up very well with double teams, doesn’t lose gap control and shows max effort every play.
    Could instantly provide interior pressure.
He has a variety of pass-rush moves, including a devastating bull rush.
Playing in the SEC, Brown has lined up against plenty of future NFL linemen, and still has managed to stand out from both a power and quickness perspective.

You said it Injury Prone! Now draft the injury prone players in the 1st round or make a big time trade and if that player cannot stay healthy who’s lost is it?

    You were right:
The reduced time on the field was the reason for the drop from the expected 3rd round pick down to the 4th round.

1st round players and high second round players need to be healthy.

  • Stephen F Fabrizio

Not a surprise at all. We win either way. James & Wake would not have contributed much to the team this year at all! Wake was great, but he is old and has never been the same since his leg injury. He would have been too expensive too. James is the highest paid RT in the league. Broncos got snookered big time! This is exactly why the team got rid of him, very injury plagued, average at best pass blocker, decent run blocker. Broncos way overpaid for a marginal player that is always in and out of the line up. Dolphins did the right thing letting both go. Football more than any other game is a game for “young men” The Dolphins have found this out all too well in the past by bringing in FA players past their prime and a penchant for injuries. John Elway has been had a good amount of heat here in Denver for paying James $12.5 million and the guy went down in week #1. This is $2+ million more than the Dolphins were willing to pay. Broncos did panic and jump the guy for James and Miami will at least get something for both James & Wake. Not ideal, but there was always a good chance we would end up with the compensatory picks we got just because both players had a low level of potential to contribute.

Yeah, something is better than nothing. Glad we didn’t James that’s for sure. I spent all this season expecting that 3rd Round pick… Maybe I’m getting like Daffy Duck and getting greedy. You are so right, the Broncs will and are regretting signing him to that fat deal, Stephen!!! Glad we weren’t the suckers on that one.

The reduced time on the field was!

Johnathan Taylor is worthy of the 27th picked in this draft: Too many Dolphins Fans throw the running backs in the 3rd to later rounds then wonder why we have a dozen running backs on the roster and non have proven that they can start any where in the NFL?

All are entitled to their opinion but I respectfully differ some would make the statement of trading for Henry or Gordon etc. at what cost?

Johnathan Taylor: What does he bring to the Dolphins? First stability in the backfield which is a safety net for the QB etc. I like to measure the greatness of a player in how well they handle adversity. Just my opinion Admin Oregon’s defense was ranked within the top five in the nation 2019. Most of the night Oregon’s defense was overwhelming Wisconsin offensive line.

But Taylor performed while being gang tackles the entire night.
