Phins Shock NFL with Upset Victory Over Pats

Phins stunning victory over Pats has thrown the NFL Playoffs on its head

While the Miami Dolphins didn’t make the 2019 Playoffs, they sure did have a major impact on them with the shocking 27-24 upset of the Patriots. And not only were the Patriots chances to return to the Super Bowl crippled by losing the Bye Week, but the Phins also didn’t slip back past the 5th Overall Pick. For the most part, Phins fans got to eat their cake and keep it too.

This sure is a nice change of pace.

After the victory in Foxborough, even the most doubtful this regime has to admit this time around it feels different.

What we learned from Miami epic win Sunday
  • Miami showed more discipline than the Patriots. Miami ended the year ranked 4th and the Patriots 6th in the least amount of penalties. Coincidently, Miami committed 4 penalties and the Patriots 6.
  • DeVante Parker HAS arrived. His big day may very well have robbed Stephon Gilmore of his DPOY award.
  • Like Parker, Mike Gesicki has found his groove and the two look to be potent weapons for years to come.
  • Ryan Fitzpatrick is more than just a stop-gap QB. His age gives him a small window, but he is having a renaissance and he’s a special player. Draft another QB for sure, but it’s Fitzpatrick’s team until someone takes it from him.
  • Isaiah Ford was the first player Belichick mentioned leading up to the game. Ford showed why on Sunday. Miami is stacked at receiver heading into this offseason.
  • A cast of ‘whos’ in the secondary managed to limit Tom Brady to only 221 yards. What can be done with this secondary when they infuse it will talent?
  • Andrew Van Ginkel had 7 solo tackles with two for a loss. This late-round pick is shaping up to be a real draft find.

This win wasn’t a fluke, last-second trick play that can be dismissed as ‘lucky’. The Dolphins led most of the game and drove down the field for the game-winning score against the reigning Super Bowl Champions desperate to stop them. They even proved the sports betting software services, who had them has 14 point underdogs, wrong.

Step by step, the Dolphins future is getting brighter

The Dolphins have upset the Patriots before–in Miami… but it has been a long time since they’ve done it in Foxborough. Yes, the Patriots aren’t the same powerhouse of the past, but these aren’t the same old Dolphins either.

I have to give it to Jimmy Bourbon. In his last article, he brought up the Dolphins upset win of the Patriots in 2015 that cost them the 1st Overall seed. It feels like he was on the nose with that one… sort of. There is a huge difference between then and now, though. Miami is ascending with plenty of money and draft picks with their Head Coach of the future, not a Cap bloated team run by an interim H.C. heading into the offseason searching for direction.

So, while the upset of the Patriots and hurting their playoff chances are similar, Miami is on a far better road than in 2015.

As I’ve said since Day 1, the most important question mark that needs to be answered this season is do we have the right coach? We most certainly do! Now it’s on to the offseason. Chris Grier and Marvin Allen have shown they can find gems anywhere and Brian Flores and his staff can coach them up. The 2020 Season looks like the start of a new era for the Miami Dolphins. How long has it been since Phins fans had this much hope at the end of a season? Go Phins!!!

Great Article and Amen to that Brother! Great job to Coach Flores and team. I’ve beeb very critical of Mr. Grier but truth is he must be commended for the vision to hire Coach Flores.

After this game and season the Dolphins can erase that standard of mediocrity off of their chest.

    GO Dolphins!

Thanks, Steve… I was so flabbergasted over the win. Felt like old times. Flores is the man we’ve been looking for since Shula. They have a similar feel in character and consistency of nature. It will be interesting to see how high he can take this thing. “After this game and season the Dolphins can erase that standard of mediocrity off of their chest.” So agree with this statement. This is why I wanted my 6 six wins… I’ll count this week’s win as two 🙂
