Phins: “Please, Just Select BPA!”

Reaching for a position of need isn’t a good formula for the Phins

Every year when the draft rolls around, football fans wonder what will their team’s draft strategy be? Will the GM draft based on the highest need, best talent available, or a mixture of the two? While the Phins have a lot of draft picks, drafting good players isn’t easy. Every selection counts… especially for a team that needs a lot of talent. This is why Chris Grier must avoid reaching based on need and just draft the best player available in the draft.

The bulk of the draft conversations are about drafting this position or that position. While I do want Miami to select a QB this year, I also think they should select one every year. So I’m fine with Miami selecting a Jalen Hurts, Jacob Eason, Jake Fromm or a 3rd tier QB in the 2nd-4th round. All I want is for the Phins to select the best player available with each pick–whatever the position.

Miami needs to hit on plenty of their top picks to have a successful draft

This is one of the most important drafts in franchise history! With all this ammo, Miami can’t out of the draft with a collection of hum-hum players and projects.

They just can’t.

Now if there is a QB available at #5 that they evaluate as the best player available, then I can’t argue with that. But they’d better nail the selection! However, if say Chase Young, Isaiah Simmons, Jeff Okudah, or Derrick Brown are also available it’s hard not to think one of these players may actually be better than say Tua, Herbert or Love.

It doesn’t take top-notch best bookie software to know a football team can’t have enough high-end players. Considering that Miami has 5 picks in the first two rounds, they must walk away with three Day 1 starters out of those first five picks–at least.

Best Player Available gives you the best chance to find a good player

BPA is good news for those hoping Miami will fix their awful offensive line. If Miami drafts BPA they should walk away with some good ones because this is a top-heavy draft for Offensive Linemen. Analysts are projecting that possibly seven O-linemen will be drafted in the first round. Miami must come away with at least one of those players–two would be even better.

Also, the 2020 Draft is considered a very deep draft in wide receivers. So even though wide receiver is the one position we are deep at, if a talented one slips to the middle rounds the Phins should draft him. The best player available is best player available.

Preston Williams is a real talent, but he went down out of the blue for the season as he was heading for the Rookie of the Year. In the NFL, you are never ‘set’ at a position. The injury bug can ravage even a team’s deepest position This is why a team can never have enough good football players… whether you have a big need at that position or not. Acquiring good players is always a winner. It’s better to draft a good player, than an average one because of need.

Use some of those late picks to get back into the mid-rounds

Also, this is a deep draft and Miami has enough ammunition in backend picks to get back into the 3rd or 4th round with a trade… so they can select the best player available.

Sure, Miami won’t hit a home run on every selection. However, going with the BPA strategy gives a better chance for success compared to reaching for players based on need or trading away the farm to draft a QB.

What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins News fans’ thoughts on what Miami’s draft strategy should be?

Jimmy I agree with BPA concept. I am dead set against reaching and mortgaging the team to move up a few spots and select a player. Personally, I would like to stand pat at #5 and pick the BPA. If that is one of the QB’s okay, but don’t reach! I would like to see (2) OL in the first 2 rounds, plus NT/DT and a stud RB. We need playmakers and we also need to dominate in the trenches.

NT/DT is a missing piece for sure. They could find a clogger though mid-rounds. Still wished we had taken Lawrence last year… and Vita Vea is really coming on after a tough 1st year. Lawrence was a monster and Wilkens meh. It’s a long-distance run though and not a sprint. I’m for BPA with a slight lean this way or that. I might take Wills over Okudah even though Okudah is BPA… Simmons over everyone though.
