Phins Have 2nd Wave of Free Agents

Phins pulled in a few more Free Agents on Day 2

The Miami Dolphins have grossly outspent every NFL team in the 2020 Free Agency. Their current total spent on Free Agents is $230 million, more than double the second-place Browns at $102 million. I guess Brian Flores was serious about winning, after all.

The Phins added to their massive Day 1 of Free Agency
The Phins Day 2 haul in Free Agents
  • DE Emmanuel Ogbah (6’4”, 275lbs, age 26) signed a 2 year deal for $15 million. Ogbah earned his PFF Grade of 70.1 on only 410 snaps because of a pectoral tear. But, in his limited play, he managed 23 tackles, 5.5 sacks, 3 passes defended, and a forced fumble. Lack of consistency from injury has been an issue for Ogbah. He missed 2 games in 2018 and 6 games in 2017. On the plus side, Ogbah has also been surprisingly good in pass coverage 20 passes defended in 4 seasons. He is a player with high positional flexibility. This was a quality signing considering the big upside and manageable price with ‘only’ $7.5 million guaranteed.
  • RB Jordan Howard (6’0”, 225 lbs, age 25) signed a 2 year deal for $10 million. Howard had a PFF grade of 60.0 in 2019, but this grade is enhanced by his pass-blocking grade of 75.0. None of Miami’s RBs were quality protection for Fitzpatrick in 2019. Howard should help plenty on 3rd Down in 2020. Once on the verge of stardom, Howard could have a rebirth if he can stay healthy… and Miami builds the O-line.
  • OLB Kamu Grugier-Hill (6’2”, 230lbs, age 26) signed a 1 year deal for $3 million. Hill suffered a grade 3 MCL sprain on his knee in Training Camp severely limiting his season. Ultimately, he was put on I.R. late in the season because the knee never healed. Hill proved himself a tough player, but his PFF grade of 60.1 didn’t meet the high expectations the Eagles had for him. The potential is there that Miami found a diamond in the rough.
This was a well thought out Free Agency recipe

This Free Agency strategy brings a lot of flexibility.

Miami can move on from Xavien Howard next year if he can’t get his life and health fixed. And, other than Van Noy and Jones, Miami can move on from any of these Free Agents in short order as well. This will keep Brian Flores’s mantra of competition alive.

Should any FA not named Van Noy or Jones underperform or get beat out by a rookie, Miami can move on from them without a severe cap hit in the coming years because they are short or front-loaded. The bulk of the money from the contracts hits this season’s cap, so Miami will have cap flexibility starting next year. Amazingly, this is cap responsibility even with spending big.

Despite the massive purchases, this has been a reasonable and well thought out Free Agency. From a contracts standpoint, fans should tip their hat to how Grier has handled the books. BUT, the most important moves are still to come. You can bet with the best pay per head services like AcePerHead.com that Grier must play his cards even better on Draft Day to turn this franchise around.

Still, so far, so good. Go Phins!!!

The Best Man wins the Job: Don’t be surprised about Herbert, I cannot stress enough that Herbert age 22 would take over the Dolphins offense by game https://youtu.be/r-gG_g_vFPQ; There are Herbert haters against Herbert without Knowing his talent are his will to win?

ARMANDO SALGUERO Taken from the Miami Herald Lee then stood at the 50-yard line, expecting a good-but-not-necessarily-amazing static throw. It was then that he was advised to take few steps backward.

And Herbert, standing at the goal line, used only his upper-body torque to fire the ball 61 yards to the hash right in front of Lee. Then he moved over to the other side of the field and again threw with no legwork to the far hash right were Lee had positioned himself — another 62-yard throw.

Justin Herbert has a great arm, folks.

It is one of the most powerful and gifted arms in the draft. And it is an arm perfectly capable of playing in the AFC East as the Dolphins play annual games in Foxboro, Massachusetts., East Rutherford, New Jersey, and Orchard Park, New York, against their division rivals.

So Herbert put an impressive exclamation point on his workout and is now finished with the bulk of his on-field work during the current draft season leading up to the April draft.

I can see Herbert. And Jones later in the Round… or maybe a trade up from 18 to get a top LT. I just worry about his persona. He is just a kid. But, Dan had such swag at that age… I guess I’m spoiled.

We signed C Ted Karras 10 minutes after this article. Karras has a similar PFF to Kilgore. But he’s bigger and 5 years younger. That looks like a good signing.

I like Ogbah and Howard. On Howard, they say he’s bad at pass-catching, so might not be a great third down back. He’s a big bruising back who can break tackles.

On Grugier Hill, I see a WLB at 230 lbs. Somebody who can back up Jerome Baker.

Hey, Rich… have to approve first-time posters comments and was under the weather. So, sorry for the delay. Weird, I thought you posted before. Jimmy has a wack system for comments here. Been begging him to use discuss… I’m just the worker, he’s the boss.

Anyway, Yeah, saw the Karras signing just after I posted. Bad timing 🙂 Been thinking a lot about that signing and working on an article now on it. I really like Ogbah.

      On Howard https://www.windycitygridiron.com/2018/4/4/17199266/chicago-bears-jordan-howard-matt-nagy-future-running-backs-value-mitchell-trubisky-nfl-2018

This is a real good article on him. And it states your points on the drops… although he did improve. My point is he can pass block as he is a very physical guy and really in blocking the willingness is a large quantity. Laird will be the route guy. I think Howard will play the blocker, screen, and flat guy. Ballage and Gaskin not so much in the pass game. Laird is an okay blocker, willing, but light in the pants. Howard isn’t the guy to run routes (and thanks for the info. I thought of him as a different, more complete player… I’ll write an amendment in an article with thanks to you), but he’ll be good enough for play action pass protection. I think this wil be a big part of this offense this year.

I’m wondering if Baker will find himself in a more of a cover role this year. Hill is a pretty good run defender. Baker isn’t. His instincts aren’t the greatest.

      Thanks for the thought, Rich.

Draft: Round #1-QB, T, G or C. Round #2-DT/NT, DL or OL, RB

It has to be a tackle. Right now they are trying to make a run with Fitz for the next two years (my belief) and they need to fix the OL and especially the LT. They need a plug and play player who can ice the pass rush 1-on-1. If I had to bet it will be LT. I think they are higher on Rosen and Fitz than most think, Stephen.

MJ, you may be correct! I think if Tua did not injure his hip the team would most certainly draft him. However, now I think that they are scared. Look at Albert Wilson. Since his hip injury, he has missed most of the past two seasons! Tua could have the “Bo Jackson” injury. The problem is the malignant phase of the injury takes time to show itself, all of a sudden, Bo could not play, football or baseball. Drafting Tua rolls the dice! I also think that Grier and company have never been that high on Herbert or Love. Both have strengths and weaknesses. We could go LT, G, RT in the first round? Rosen actually did not play all that bad in his four games last season. He struggled to learn the complex offense, but generally, he was not horrible at all. This with no running game, the worst OL in the league, and injuries at receiver. I guess we will all find out in late April.

I don’t see more than 1 OL in RD 1… maybe a second Ol with the late pick… but that sounds like a lot. Belli uses a high pick on LT and that’s it. Every other position is found outside of RD1. I bet it will be the same formula. Tua is wayyyy too much of a risk. QB is important but if you build a good team you don’t need super elite to be successful. I think the formula is build the team and be patient for the right QB to come. The build it and they will come motto rings in my mind with this club. Could be wrong though… been wrong before.
