Phins Best Draft Position Is On the Line

Phins v.s. Bengals has the #2 spot in the 2020 Draft on the line

With one of the most exciting Phins offseasons coming, the light at the end of the tunnel is just about here for Phins fans. But before we get to the fun, Miami must first play the final two games of this seemingly never-ending season.

This is Miami’s last home game of the 2019 season and they face the hapless Cincinnati Bengals. Despite playing against the NFL’s worst team, the various sports betting software providers have Miami as only a slight home favorite at -1. This is telling because generally in sports betting the NFL home team has a 3 point edge. The oddsmakers are saying by this line that the Bengals are the better team.

On a side note, it’s mind-boggling that in the first tiebreaker for a better seed in the playoff race is the head to head matchup between teams. However, for some unknown reason, this logic does not apply to a team’s draft position. The NFL uses the strength of schedule or lack thereof as the tiebreaker. Currently, the Dolphins are still sitting in the 3rd draft spot even though they lost to the Giants and are only fractions ahead of the Redskins.

Doesn’t it feel like can’t Miami ever catch a break?

Tankathon.com is my go-to guide on the draft order and this is what they say about the Top 10 picks.

If the Giants beat the Redskins and Miami loses, Miami will vault to the #2 spot. However, the Giants are currently a +2.5 point underdog against the Redskins in Washington. Double the action is coming in on the ‘dog’ and that’s not good for the Giants’ chances to win.

The Dolphins’ best scenario for their draft position is to lose the last two games AND get a little help from other teams around the league. Winning any of these two last games push us out of the Chase Young Bowl and as far back as the 5th ‘pick’ overall.

The million-dollar question is if Miami gets the 2nd pick would the Bengals be open to trading back and what would the cost to Miami be?  I know every analyst and their mother has the Bengals drafting Burrow, but they are the Bengals after all! What if they love Chase Young or another QB? Let’s cross our fingers that the ‘Bengals brain trust’ uses Burrow as a smokescreen to get someone to trade up?

It will be interesting to see how this all finally plays out. At least, after this game we will be far clearer on the final draft order!

    Continuation Coach Noll:

    2. He was later diagnosed with epilepsy. The young man did his best to hide or ignore the condition. Even with his extra work to pay the tuition for Benedictine High, there were weeks when the family couldn’t afford the medicine to prevent the seizures. Sometimes Noll would take his medicine just every other day. But eventually, the seizures would recur.

    3. One of his Coaching jobs was Coach for Don Shula and the Baltimore Colts.

    • Steve

      Continuation Coach Noll:

Coach Noll built the team through astute drafting and meticulous tutoring. During his career, he was notable for the opportunities he gave African Americans, starting the first black quarterback in franchise history and hiring one of the first black assistant coaches in league history. He was often credited with maintaining the morale of the Western Pennsylvania region despite its steep economic decline by creating a team of champions in the image of its blue collar fan base.

      • Steve

        Continuation Coach Noll:

After a seven-year playing career that included two NFL Championships as a member of his hometown Cleveland Browns and several years as an assistant coach with various teams, in 1969 Noll took the helm of the then moribund Steelers (which had played in only one post-season game in its previous 36 years, a 21–0 loss), and turned it into a perennial contender. As a head coach, Noll won four Super Bowls, four AFC titles and nine Central Division championships, compiled a 209–156–1 (.572) overall record, a 16–8 playoff record and had winning records in 15 of his final 20 seasons.[2] His four Super Bowl victories rank second behind Bill Belichick for the most of any head coach in NFL history.

        • Steve

          Continuation Coach Noll:

The key to Noll’s coaching success during this run was the Steelers’ skill in selecting outstanding players in the NFL college player draft. Noll’s first round one pick was Joe Greene, a defensive tackle from North Texas State, who went on to become a perennial All-Pro and anchor the defensive line. During the next few years, the Steelers drafted quarterback Terry Bradshaw (Louisiana Tech) and running back Franco Harris (Penn State) as round one picks. In the 1974 draft, Noll and the Steelers achieved a level of drafting success never seen before or since, when they selected four future Hall of Fame players with their first five picks: wide receivers Lynn Swann and John Stallworth, middle linebacker Jack Lambert, and center Mike Webster. To this day, no other draft by any team has included more than two future Hall of Famers.

          • Steve

            Continuation Coach Noll:

The teams that won Super Bowls IX and X used a run-oriented offense, primarily featuring Franco Harris and blocking back Rocky Bleier. Over the next few years, Terry Bradshaw matured into an outstanding passer, and the teams that won Super Bowls XIII and XIV fully utilized the receiving tandem of Lynn Swann and John Stallworth.

Noll was notoriously shy and did not like the media or give many interviews. His 1970s teams were so talented that his contributions as head coach (and architect of the team) often were overlooked.

    Hello Admin

Do you remember Captain and Tennille songs do that to me one more time

Ranking Miami Dolphins Starting Quarterbacks (since Dan Marino)
    https://www.lockedondolphins.com/dolphins/ranking-miami-dolphins-starting-quarterbacks-since-dan-marino-19-11/

    19) Daunte Culpepper 2nd-round draft pick the team traded away

    18) John Beck If Chad Henne was a waste of a second-round pick, then what do we call John Beck? A quarterback who should have never been drafted as high as he was (40th-overall), Beck performed admirably in college, but no one projected him to be an NFL starter

    17) A.J. Feeley Another 2nd-round pick thrown straight into the garbage, A.J. Feeley was the Philadelphia Eagles backup quarterback who accumulated a 4-1 record when Donovan McNabb went down for a stretch in 2002. He didn’t play a single snap in 2003 and yet somehow, the Dolphins thought he would turn into a franchise quarterback. He didn’t.

    16) Cleo Lemon Cleo Lemon didn’t stand much of a chance.
Starting for a team with minimal talent at wide receiver and at running back, Lemon was left with a barren cupboard of playmakers. While it’s not entirely his fault the team went 1-15 during that season (he only started 8 games that year

    15) Tyler Thigpen After Chad Pennington suffered a season-ending injury during the 2009 season, Tyler Thigpen was acquired from the Kansas City Chiefs for a 7th-round draft pick.

    14) Trent Green The Dolphins felt they won a steal-of-a-trade when they acquired Trent Green from the Kansas City Chiefs for a 5th-round draft pick.

    13) Sage Rosenfels Never meant to be the team’s starter or savior, Sage Rosenfels was drafted in the 4th-round of the 2001 NFL draft by the Washington Redskins and was subsequently traded to the Dolphins for a 7th-round pick the following offseason.

    12) Ray Lucas There’s really no reason why Ray Lucas should be this high (um, low?) on a starting quarterback list. Another career-backup, Lucas is essentially the reason why the 2002 season was derailed.

    11) Brian Griese Former Super Bowl champion* and Pro Bowl starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos, Brian Griese –

      10) Chad Henne Chad Henne doesn’t crack the top-10 because he was good.
      9) Jay Cutler Smoking Jay Cutler. He was entertaining for the rest of America, but in the eyes of every Dolphins fan, he was a waste of $10m. It’s one thing if the team “had” to spend the money, but Miami could have carried over that $10m and set themselves up for a better 2018 season. Instead, Adam Gase thought he could salvage the season by luring Cutler out of retirement.

      8) Joey Harrington At the expense of a 5th-round draft pick, the Miami Dolphins acquired one of the biggest draft busts of all time.

      7) Brock Osweiler Here’s a man who nearly saved a Dolphins season after Ryan Tannehill injured himself (yet again).

      6) Damon Huard Like Jay Fiedler, Damon Huard is a product of having a phenomenal team around him.
      5) Matt Moore The golden boy for much of the Dolphins fanbase, Matt Moore was never anything more than an overhyped backup quarterback.

      4) Gus Frerotte Gus Frerotte is probably the most-boring quarterback on this list. Not speaking personality wise (RoboHenne was a thing for awhile), but Frerotte was just a generic starter for this team. Accumulating a 9-6 record as a starter the one year he was with the Dolphins.
      3) Jay Fiedler The main reason Dave Wannstedt and his Ron Jeremy mustache failed as the Dolphins head coach.

      2) Ryan Tannehill We all want to bury Ryan Tannehill as a starting quarterback for this team, but is it because he was such a terrible player? Or is it because we are dealing with 20 years of futility and he was just another failed “answer” at the position? Tannehill cost this team a 1st-round pick, but drafting him really wasn’t the wrong decision. Yes, Miami should have went with their gut and drafted Russell Wilson.

      1) Chad Pennington Here you have it, Dolphins fans. The only glimmer of hope we’ve experienced over a two-decade stretch.

Well, I did say this on many occasions 🙂 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxmzgwkq4Fg&feature=emb_logo

I said with the right circumstances he could fall into that 14-8 range of a QB. This is why QB isn’t THE highest need of fixing. GM, HC, OL, QB, LB, DL, CB, TE, RB, WR, S are my quick thoughts on hierarchy.

          Hello Admin

What I’ve witnessed before being a Dolphins Fans: In the 70’s I was a Steeler Fan before their Supper Bowl Run.

I really had nothing but admiration for the Great Coach Chuck Noll because he did not sugar coat. Once accepting the Head Coaching job he may it clear that! There one job was to win the Supper Bowl. One player laugh and was cut from the team.

            Continuation Coach Noll:

            1. In 1942, at the age of 10, Chuck Noll joined a racially integrated neighborhood football team called the Clippers which had an African American coach. His early experiences growing up in an ethnically and racially diverse neighborhood in Cleveland would remain with him his entire life. Noll learned to judge people by their character, talent, and work ethic. https://upittpress.org/legendary-steelers-coach-chuck-noll-fact-blitz/

The Dolphins can draft a Tackle at the number 3 spot and missed on trade back for Isaiah Simmons at the 10th to 13th spot. For that number 3 picked O/T at 32 millions the Fins can acquire– How many of these formal 1st to 3rd rounders free agents below. Could these linemen step up there game for the Dolphins for the value of that one O/T? I really envisions the Fins selecting 5 to 6 offensive linemen and defensive linemen out of free agency and 4 offensive linemen out of the Draft with drafting 2 quality defensive linemen.

We are at 5 and I think 4-5 is the best we can do. Thomas, Young and Burrows likely off the table– but given the franchise drafting anything is possible. If no trade back is there CB Okudah is the best play available for the value in this scenario… or we could draft for lesser value since it would be ‘moronic’ to draft a CB. I see AJ Epenesa as a wildcard. Think he might fit this scheme very nicely and is VERY talented. Gonna’ spend more time watching him. He has that Richard Seymore feel. Pat took him 6th.

      • Steve

        Iowa

A.J. Expenesa is very talented Defensive End.
        Career highlights and awards
        2x First-team All-Big Ten (2018, 2019)
        Freshman All-Big Ten (2017)

Opposing offenses have put a ton of attention on Epenesa this season, consistently double and even triple-teaming him at his right defensive end position. That being said, despite the constant attention, Epenesa was able to make a massive impact against Minnesota on Saturday. In Iowa’s 23-19 over the 7th-ranked Golden Gophers, Epenesa piled up 2.5 sacks and even forced a fumble.

He was absolutely unblockable on Saturday and undoubtedly brought his 2020 NFL draft stock back to a respectable level. Epenesa is never going to get on the Chase Young level again, but he is a rock-solid first-round player who could get himself in the top-ten conversation with continued strong play.

Epenesa is known as more of a power-based player. He is incredibly strong at the point of attack and does an incredible job of winning with leverage and strong hands. Epenesa is a stout run defender who can also win with the bull rush. However, do not sleep on his ability to move.

Epenesa is extremely quick off of the ball and has surprising quickness in short spaces. He gets consistent upfield burst and can bend around the edge a bit. Epenesa undoubtedly put some good tape on the board on Saturday, but it was his strip-sack that stood out to me.

Picked number 24th maybe Jalen Hurst: Estimate salary based on picked 24th in the 2019 draft was $11,898,292 (What 1st round QB has this record???? Its starring us in the Face! This is prime Time:

That’s a little high for Hurst… not sure he is worth that. Brissett went in the 3rd… things have changed a bit since then… so maybe there’s a bump up. I’d say 2nd for Hurst.

      • Steve

        Admin I hear you Brother!

Just remember those words after the game this weekend 28 December 2019. Here’s the Bottom line:

According to ESPN.com’s Mark Schlabach and Chris Low, three Sooners will be suspended for the Peach Bowl, including Perkins.

Additionally, the Sooners will be without Delarrin Turner-Yell due to a broken collarbone, per The Athletic’s Jason Kersey.

Losing Ronnie Perkins and Turner-Yell is not a good sign for a defense tasked with containing the Heisman Trophy winner and two 1,000-yard receivers.

LSU’s offense may be hindered a bit by an injury to Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who is dealing with a hamstring injury, per Sports Illustrated’s Ross Dellenger.

If the running back can’t play, it would limit LSU’s ground game, but it would not significantly hurt the passing attack.

Burrow has seven straight 300-yard performances and has thrown at least 10 touchdowns to three players.

Between Ja’Marr Chase, Justin Jefferson and Terrace Marshall, the Tigers should threaten the Sooners secondary on every play.

Before allowing 39 points to Iowa State and Baylor, Oklahoma conceded over 20 points in six of seven contests, including the defeat to Kansas State.

Without Perkins pressuring the quarterback and Turner-Yell patrolling the secondary, the Sooners could allow 30-40 points.

Jalen Hurts and CeeDee Lamb are capable of keeping up with the Tigers thanks to their own big-play potential, but the star wideout is going up against a defensive backfield with a few NFL prospects.

If Grant Delpit, Kristian Fulton and Co. can at least limit Lamb’s production on a few drives, LSU will have a better chance to cover the 13-point spread.

If that occurs, Hurts could challenge the LSU defense with his legs, as he has produced 10 games with a score through the air and on the ground.

Just because LSU is the better team does not mean it will automatically cover, as it won three of its five ranked matchups by single digits.

Trading back for Issac Simmons at maybe 10th to 11th position: The country will pay to watch this kid play on prime time TV. Taking a O/T at picked 3 costing estimate $32,415,769 vs picked 10th or lower estimate $18,810,201 plus additional picks is the different base on 2019 draft.

    Hello Dol-Fans

Knowing the value of a player vs gambling on Deon Jordan’s, Charles Harris’s, Tannehill for 7 years, John Beck 2 seasons drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the second round of the 2007 NFL Draft and now watching J. Rosen a trade for 2nd rounder??

This is what happen in the 2019 draft:
Players drafted in the first round receive four-year contracts that carry a team option for a fifth season.
drafted in the first round, offensive tackle Jonah Williams, who was chosen 11th by the Cincinnati Bengals, will get a contract worth about $17.6 million, and running back Josh Jacobs, who was selected 24th by the Oakland Raiders, will get a contract worth about $11.9 million. Williams’ signing bonus will be about $10.8 million and Jacobs’ should be around $6.67 million.

    Josh Jacobs college awards:
    CFP National Champion (2017)
    2× SEC Champion (2016, 2018)
    SEC Championship Game MVP

This is what can happen in the 2020 Draft:

Picked 23rd maybe Johnathan Taylor: This player has proven himself season after season on and off the field- Harvard to Wisconsin grad- good character.
Media Friendly, knows how to dress etc. Will sell jersey’s and the nation will want to watch him play in prime time games.
    2× Doak Walker Award (2018, 2019)
    2× Unanimous first-team All-American (2018, 2019)
AP Big Ten Newcomer of the Year (2017)
Big Ten Running Back of the Year (2018, 2019)
Big Ten Freshman of the Year (2017)
    3× Consensus First-team All-Big Ten (2017, 2018, 2019)
All-time Freshman Season Rushing Record (1,977 yards)

I think the media is of a mind on Rosen and has said that’s also the way Flores feels. I think this might not be the case. I think Rosen is still in the picture. They will draft another QB though… I think Rosen still has a shot to take the position.

      • Steve

        Admin

There is up side to Rosen. Maybe he run more 30 yard sprints in practice and given 2 second to pass in practice I don’t know but what is clear a 37 year old Quarterback is more mobile than he is. After this season the Dolphin have 4 years to there Supper Bowl Goal. How far do you go with Rosen in this time table?

  • Steve

    Hello Admin

Very nice Posting on the the Fins. I spoke earlier in the season about we can’t have it both ways. My thoughts still are just lose!

I can never understand why a team would trade away during the season its key players and trade away all their draft picks on a few unproven players?

I believed the Bengal’s can mess up a good thing more so than the Dolphins and they will fine away to beat the Dolphins. We may just get the number 2 spot.

    • admin

This was Jimmy’s and I disagree with trading up. Bengals won’t and we shouldn’t. We are now 5th.

LSU Tigers and Oklahoma Sooner battle tonight and all odds against Oklahoma losing. I feel
Oklahoma will make it a closer game and may win it.

The Oklahoma Sooner are well-represented in Sporting News’ latest mock 2020 NFL Draft. Using current standings to create the order of the picks, SN projects the following:
