Phins Add AAF O-Linemen Michael Dunn

Michael Dunn proved himself one of the best blockers in the lower league

Dunn has yet to prove he can make it on the pro level

The Miami Dolphins have finally dipped their toe in the AAF Free Agent pool with the signing of Birmingham Iron offensive lineman Michael Dunn.

The former Maryland Terps, LA Rams, and Jacksonville Jaguar offensive tackle has been signed to fill out a very thin group of O-linemen.

Dunn, an All-Big Ten honorable mention, started 48 games over his career in College Park. At Left Tackle, he allowed a total of only 43 QB pressures over his career. He never posted a PFF Grade lower than 80.0 in pass-blocking.

This level of success didn’t translate to NFL success.

Dunn was signed as an undrafted rookie by the Rams, but he was cut prior to the season. He was later signed by the Jags to the Practice Squad. At the end of the 2018 Season, the Jags released him.

In his lone season in the AAF, Dunn was considered one of the premier run-blockers where he played both Guard and Tackle.

Dunn will now get another shot to prove he belongs on an NFL roster.

Now, I’m not going to try and float your boat. There’s nothing in his history to sink your teeth into and say he’s worth getting excited about. Miami will still draft and sign plenty of O-linemen. Dunn isn’t a major factor regarding their strategy on draft day…

… But, there is an interesting note to his signing.

Pat Flaherty was the Jaguars Offensive Line coach during Dunn’s time there. He had a whole year to evaluate him, and this exposure had to play a part in Dunn’s signing. Dunn’s performance in camp will be a small indication in Flaherty’s acumen at spotting talent.

It will only be a minor storyline to see if Flaherty saw something in Dunn that was more than a camp body. Still, it will be of some interest.

Pay per head software like www.AcePerHead.com, says the best bet is Dunn will be cut. But if he can battle his way to even a backup spot, it will have been a nice little move by Grier and Flaherty.

    Ho hum.

90% you are spot-on-right… but this small ball approach is about good evals, high competition, and large numbers of prospects. This is the best road to build a team but it devours all who attempt it but the very best…

I’m extremely happy to see such a move. This shows the proper effort on all sides.

I can’t complain about the move you have a player who has shown juice on lower levels, is a known quantity and is young… As long as I see a few draft picks being brought in on the Oline as well, Chris 🙂
