Phins $25Million Dollar Man Needs To Step Up!

Reshad Jones made too many BIG mistakes in Week 4

The endless media droning about the Dolphins 2019 ‘tank job’ would have a ton more validity… IF the Phins were losing despite the elite play of their top-paid players.

As it is, if the Dolphins brass is tanking, Xavien Howard and Reshad Jones must be in on it because their play is terrible and has contributed heavily to this ugly season. Considering that their combined salaries of $53mill this year is near 30% of the entire team’s CAP space, that’s a ton of negative impact.

Howard is currently PFFs 95th ranked Cornerback and Jones is the 48th ranked Safety with a coverage ranking of 91st.

Yikes!

While Howard saw a slight improvement in Week 4 against the Chargers, Jones’s coverage had several key breakdowns and was a big reason why the Phins lost. Extremely undisciplined in key moments, Jones was directly responsible for one touchdown and played a big part in two more scores.

Here are four key plays that needed a leader to make the smart play… not even an elite one, just smart

2nd & 8 with Phins leading 7-3

  • Why on earth would Jones come off the receiver when two defenders were chasing River?
  • Given how slow River is, this decision is idiotic.

1st & 10 game tied 10-10

  • Jones isn’t in an easy spot, but his one job is to drive the runner back inside to where help is coming.
  • Instead, he bites on the inside move and loses contain.

2nd & 10 Chargers leading 17-10

  • Jones is very lackadaisical on this play (you could also say much of the game too).
  • He is communicating with the safety when he realizes the receiver went in motion.
  • Instead of speeding to the spot, he jogs across even though he is trailing far behind.
  • Rivers see this and the ball is snapped as soon as the receiver is set.
  • Jones gets caught in a pick because he is late.

1st & 10 Chargers leading 20-10

  • Sam Eguavoen’s job is to set the edge and Jones is to play Safety.
  • Jones bites on the play-action… hard.
  • This should have been a TD if not for the receivers’ injury
Jones is too undisciplined to play within this scheme

Jones had a couple of nice plays in the game… along with some poor angles, missed tackles, and the above big mistakes. This is who Jones is. When his role is a rover with the defense playing around him, he’s an impact player. But Flores’ scheme demands discipline and Jones is the square peg in the round hole. And in truth, a defensive scheme where he is a maverick is a little too susceptible to offenses because of Jones’ hit or miss instincts.

Could Jones be a fit? He could. But, the $25 million dollar question is does an old dog want to learn new tricks?

Now, Jones isn’t the only one to blame for the poor pass defense last week and he didn’t play Weeks 2 & 3. Even though Howard improved, he also made a couple of critical errors last week too. Then there is Eric Rowe who you can bet with the price per head sportsbook sites that he’ll get toasted half the time. But the biggest issue of all for this secondary is the tendency to have ‘crowded zones’… which will be examined more closely next article.

How these issues are handled will determine if the bye week will bring a better team or better tank. We’ll see. Week 6 is the firm fork in the road for the tank or not. Go Phins!!!

I would cut him regardless. I think he is a cancer.

Jones and Howard are tradable. Both have too big of contracts to get a very high pick but they are underachieving on this team. Pull the trigger!

Howard is just playing with sloppy technique in my humble opinion. I think he is tightening up after the contract and looking for picks instead of breakups as well. Jones sucks in this role. He also don’t look to into it when I watch his body language… very little urgency. Traded or cut next year, Van. I do like Parker though at FS. He has been surprisingly good… so far. They lose this week and I can no longer take Flores at his word. It is a sure tank if they get beat. New HC there and Flores and crew have 2 weeks to plan and rest! If they lose and aren’t tanking, then LB coach you been calling might be the right name.

Yes, the Patriots always thought Jones was a liability for the Phins. Not a smart coverage guy, but was a thumper in the box. He improved over the years, but is still not a coverage FS. Now the Dolphins want to run the hybrid DB backfield with smallish DB’s that can cover in multiple schemes, except for one shut down corner. The whole team is tanking, except for maybe the lines. The management wants to see what they can get out of the trenches and the linebackers. Everyone else has a pass on playing to potential. This is the tank job for Tua, for crying out loud. Our excellent kicker just missed two kicks from exactly the same spot last week. Embrace it folks.

I’m almost there William. But, are you saying the kicker missed on purpose? I can’t believe that (although anything is possible). Or are you saying it’s karmic or bad coaching? This Week we lose and I embrace the tank with both arms. Calling someone a liar is the worst thing you can do. I felt Flores deserved (like all people) to have him taken at his word. If they are purposely tanking, then he is a liar. Not saying it isn’t wise, but that type of play isn’t how he presented himself. Week 6 has been my due date since before the season started to make that judgment. In war, subterfuge is a very useful asset, so I can’t fault him, but my view of him will change. All that matters is winning, but I grew up with Shula and winning and character is ingrained in my nature… was hoping old would be new again, William.

Several teams has injuries already at safety. I say let’s try and trade the guy! I have always thought Jones was overrated!

Sadly, he is too expensive and with Minkah gone… he’s here for the duration of 2019. Can’t wait to see him go… so hard for me to say it as he was a fav of mine for many years, Stephen.
