Phins 2018 Chemistry Has Them Scrappy & Winning

Phins 2018 chemistry has them 2-0

Many pundits were ho-hum on Dolphins 2018 chemistry
Many pundits were ho-hum on Phins 2018 chemistry

Adam Gase and Co. made dramatic moves to change the Phins 2018 chemistry that left many scratching their heads. The disbelief given the Dolphins history made the reservations fair. But, after two weeks, a 2-0 start, and sitting at the top of the division… those ‘crazy’ moves may just be paying off.

Yes, it’s still early.

Yes, it’s a long season…

…But there’s no doubt that this team is playing very different manner compared to 2016 and 2017.

Penalties were a major issue that held back the Dolphins in 2016 & 2017.

Phinsnews spoke, over and over, about how lack of discipline was the primary thing holding back the Dolphins last season. We predicted that even being middle of the pack in committed penalties would make for a solid 2018 Season. As it stands now, the Dolphins have 9 penalties for 61 yards. The Phins are ranked #4 in the least amount of penalties just behind the # 3 New England Patriots.

In Miami’s Week 2 of 2017, the Dolphins lost 20-9 to the Jets, committing 8 penalties for 51 yards. This year, in Week 2, the Dolphins committed 2 penalties for 10 yards and won 20-12.

Causing turnovers and being disciplined is how good teams let bad teams beat themselves

After two games in 2017, the Dolphins had caused one turnover. This year they have six. If they had controlled their own turnovers it would have been two blowouts.

This is change you can believe in… if it continues.

Causing turnovers and having opponents commit penalties depends on the other team making mistakes. You can’t bank on it week-and-week-out. Other teams will play disciplined football too. But the Phins committing or not committing penalties is all on them. It’s about professionalism. Playing professional football is a stabilizing force that will have the Phins putting out a far more consistent product every week.

This Week Gase out coached Bowles in many ways.

Phinsnews believed saying goodbye to Jarvis Landry, Ndamukong Suh, and Mike Pouncey was the right move. But we weren’t so sure it was 100% bet with the pay per head sportsbook that the new players would bring the right chemistry.

What was concrete was chemistry did matter… and that the 2017 team had the wrong chemistry.

It was a curiosity though how many of the brightest sports critics saw no value in Miami’s quest for chemistry… and yet, they would still opine on chemistry in New England. It was as if team chemistry was a unique thing that only existed in New England with the ‘Patriot Way’. Everywhere else though, the only factor that mattered was talent.

For nearly two decades, Phins Fans had to hear endlessly about the ‘Patriot Way’.To infinity, ad nauseam and beyond, we were told how team chemistry trumped talent in the ‘Patriot Way’… and other teams, especially the Dolphins who were ‘winners’ of every offseason, just didn’t get it.

Yet, when the Dolphins adopted ‘Don Shula Way’ of ‘TEAM’ as the highest principle, we were told chemistry didn’t mean jack. Add insult to injury, the Phins were predicted to have less than a handful of wins and Gase would be canned.

Now I’m not saying this team isn’t without warts, mistakes, room for improvement…

…or that reservations about this team or Gase weren’t without reason. They were, and the jury is still out on whether this is more than just a blip on the radar. BUT what I am saying, and what we’ve witnessed over the course of two games, is that this is a team that has fully taken on the identity of their Head Coach. Like Gase, this 2018 team is cocky, aggressive, and intelligent… with a few head-scratching moments along the way.

This type of bumpy road is typical though of all good teams finding their identity and suffering growing pains.

Look at John Gruden who inherited a much more talented team than Gase did in 2016. He is, or was, an excellent head coach. Turning things around aren’t always a short-term process, a la Bill Parcells. Let’s not forget though that Parcells had quick turnarounds followed by a quick collapse.

3 years is enough time for a cut off period as to whether a coach is right or not.

They told us when Gase was hired that he was talented but green. This year Gase and Co. were in make or break mode. The Phins have the talent to win and the team Gase likes, so there are no excuses left. So far, it’s been making.

I am not ‘crowning their asses’ as an infamous commenter on the forum said last year over and over. But special teams, run defense, a run game, and low penalties are the recipe of success in the NFL. For two weeks the Dolphins have cooked this recipe to a tee. If they make it three in a row, and if they can limit their turnovers, they may just be who they think they are… and a team to believe in. Go Phins!!!

    2-0!!!
Everyone is playing average or better (draft picks, FA’s, retained players)and that includes McMillan. McMillan right now is average at best, I keep reminding myself that he is a rookie (essentially). Tools are there for McMillan, I just hope that it comes together real soon, because “if” Carr and company do not take advantage of McMillan’s struggles, we all know that Brady will next week for sure.
The defense has been a pleasant surprise. No Suh, no problem, I bet none of you’all seen that coming??? We’ve played 2 physical teams that like to line up and run down hill and we had none of it. Speaking of defense and draft picks playing well, What a steal Godchaux has been, and do not under estimate Taylor’s importance in the D-Line rotation.
The Sitton injury will have an effect and is unfortunate. Larsen was signed for this reason, fingers crossed he; A) Can stay healthy B) Minimize the lost of Sitton.
Whether or not you believe this team to be real, you must feel pretty good about the roster and the direction this team is heading. Draft pick(s) making a difference, perfect balance between young and old (veterans). Did I say young, I thought I read somewhere that Miami has the youngest starting team in the AFC? I’ll have to look for that.
I absolutely love that we ride ourselves of over paid “I” guys. Not to mention set ourselves up nicely with the salary cap. It is so refreshing that this team this organization seems to be heading in the right direction. Heck, even the front office has seemed to figure things out. No drama, no complaints, no second guessing.
I’ve said all along that I believe Gase’s plan was delayed 1 year because they made the playoffs in his initial year, thus forcing him (essentially) to see how far that team could go in year 2. Not far when adversity hit.
Gase now has a team that more resembles his vision, its not quite complete, but boy it sure is a far cry from what we have been used to in the 2000’s!

Agree, but I think he is terrible in coverage… a slightly below avg in run d.

Agree. The wins kinda’ forced him to run with pieces that he might have thought didn’t fit. The discipline is key. If we are even middle of the pack, I’ll be happy. If they are in Top 10 least penalties, then he will have my full trust going forward. Tannehill is the key now. He just needs to stop the sloppy play. Looking over the game near a dozen times, we were lucky to win. Tannehill’s fumble and sacks really hurt the momentum. That pick in the endzone and that miracle stop before the 1st half could have easily gone the other way. Our low penalities and their sloppy play really was a big deal. But, this team is heading in the right direction for sure. Hope they win this week because the next 3 games after that will be rough. Nice though seeming them win right out of the box, Dunner! Still trying to reach Lemmus. No reply. Called too. Hope to hear from him soon.

Good start to the season. I was at the Titans game with my brother and had a great time in spite of the delays. Watching the Jets game on TV was also exciting considering how much I dislike them and seeing our Phins get out to a nice lead. Hopefully, the wins will keep coming.

Lots of improvement in the play of this year compared to last year but still much to improve on. Gase and Company have gotten my confidence for now. This is now Gase’s team, every bit of it. He has them motivated and playing hard. I would love to see him call more running plays on 3rd and 1, but overall his play calls have been fairly good. Keep up the good work Gase and Company. The key now is for players to stay healthy and keep the nose to the grind. GO DOLPHINS!

It’s a good start, Fritz. The lack of penalties and will to win is my greatest source of hope. After that is Gase’s calls and the talent of the team. I always thought Tannenhill was good enough, but he can’t carry a team. That’s not a slight, very, very few QBs can do that.

Miami really need this win because they have a string of very tough game Pats, Bengals, Bears. I don’t know if this is a good team, but I know they are a solid one. They still need more tooling. OL needs some extra life. Larsen will hold the team back. McMillan is a poor 2nd round pick… kiko goes down and LB is in trouble. And depth in the secondary could be an issue over the long haul.

BUT, this team is good enough to have a respectable season and if this professional play continues Gase will have shown he is the man to ride a few more years on.

Good to hear from you, brother. Hope all is well.

    MJ,

Do you like our chances vs. the Raiders this week?

    • admin

Yes, if we are disciplined. Gruden is in a similar seat as Gase in 2016. This team has about 10-20% of its roster that Gruden doesn’t want. They have flaws, but they have strengths too. They have petered out in both games in the second half. They have a poor pass rush and secondary. If Miami can get up and stay there for the 1st half it might take the fight out of them. 3-0 is a near death sentence. They will come out fighting hard. If Miami turns the ball over and gives them life it might kill the Dolphins chances of 3-0. 1 or fewer turnovers and low penalties and the Dolphins win. They have the better roster. Expect though that Gruden will attack McMillan… he is terrible and a liability week in and week out.
