Miami’s Cuts Save $10 Million

Dolphins started shaping up their cap late today with the cutting of two players. One cut was obvious and the other expected. Both cuts will go a long way towards stabilizing the cap and represent nearly all the money needed for the upcoming draft. Defensive End Quinton Coples and Brice McCain had their contracts terminated and with their departure, $10 million dollars was trimmed from the cap.

With the ten million shaved off, the Dolphins are at around $156 million, around six million over the cap. The new cap value, which is expected to rise, hasn’t been set but is expected to get close to $160 million, or their bouts. This still leaves Miami with much work to be done in order to have a competitive FA period, but the cutting of Coples brings me a bit of relief.

Tannenbaum drafted Coples and the fact that he cut him shows that he has the ability to move on from mistakes. The price tag all but guaranteed it, still, somewhere I feared he would try to salvage a previous mistake. This still doesn’t cover his failings at filling the guards’ spots in 2015, but to his defense, Philbin assured Tannenbaum that both Dallas and Turner had made strides. As the head of the operation, it still falls on his shoulders, but he is a self-proclaimed non-football guy who is more escapologist, liaison, and overseer rather than nuts and bolts talent evaluation. Still in the end the right move was made with Coples and McCain, and even though it didn’t take football gambling experts and the best pay per head reviews to pull the trigger, a sigh of relief was uttered.

Now the harder cuts and decisions loom on the horizon. With Coples and McCain went both the CB and DE position is that much thinner and makes cutting of Grimes more precarious and the resigning of Vernon more needed. But, with very little money with which to work with, more cuts must come and come in plenty. Let’s hope Tannenbaum and Co. are as adept at making the obvious decisions as they are at the difficult ones. Go Fins!!!
