Miami’s 12th Head Coach: Adam Gase

Tannenbaum promised an extensive search for Miami’s next head coach, and on the surface, it appears that Miami rushed and just wanted to hire a coach before any of the other coach-needy teams beat them to the punch. The Dolphins have hired Adam Gase the Chicago Bears offensive coordinator, and clearly with  the full  press they gave him, they felt he was their man. But, according to Tannenbaum they had done their due diligence and this wasn’t simply a week venture as they started their head coaching search 3 months ago with the Firing of Philbin.

I will say I definitely did not do an immediate dance of joy for this hire. The Bears scored 1.7 points more than Miami;s garbage offense did this season. Most football gambling fans will see this hire as Gase being a decent QB coach that was able to get Cutler to put up a career high 92.3 passer rating, and the hope is that he can work some magic with Ryan Tannehill. In addition, I see this hire as Miami’s brass selecting a coach that was willing to give Tannehill one more season to prove whether or not he could be a franchise QB. Miami is financially committed to Tannehill for at least one more season, so it would seem with this “QB Guru” hire, 2017 season is the “Year Of T-Hill” – not meaning it will BE his year, but that he will be the key piece.

In addition, by hiring Gase Miami has decided to keep to their trend of hiring coordinators and not opting to go after a coach that has head coaching experience. It can be argued that it should not matter whether the new coach has NFL head coaching experience or not, but for me I would have liked Miami to find a coach that had experience considering they have failed on their last three tries with Sparano, Cameron and Philbin – maybe it’s just the desperate, superstitious, contrarian in me.

What bothers me the most about this hire is not even the fact that Gase does not have head coaching experience, but that his last stop was with a losing organization with a losing season. The Bears have been a middle of the road team, and had practically the same inept offense as the Dolphins did. At least if you are going to hire a coordinator go after a guy who has been coaching a top 5 offense or defense. But then again the counter to that argument is football is a team game and he had control over only one aspect of the team.

Again, this was my initial reaction and  I am still trying to sort through emotion to get to a sober judgement. I truly hope that I have to eat my words and they taste like fine dining and Gase turns out to be the Dolphins next franchise coach. Either way we will know quickly what he is worth – if he can turn around the offense and improve T-Hill then he will be a hit…if not it could go south at warp speed, Unfortunately for Gase, the pressure is still going to be extremely high for him to make the playoffs next season. In order to evaluate T-Hill properly, this must be a re-tool and not a re-build and a re-tool has much different expectations than a re-build does. If he does not at least come close to making the playoffs then he along with T-Hill could be on the hot seat. Hopefully, he can turn this team into another last to first success story.

Gase has already begun to hire coaches for his staff, with Vance Joseph the Bengals defensive backs coach becoming the defensive coordinator (at least the Bengals defense has been very good the past few years, however that is the same team that Coyle came from), Clint Hunt the new defensive line coach, Matt Burke the new linebackers coach, and Jerome Henderson the new defensive backs coach.

What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins News fans thoughts about the Dolphins hiring Adam Gase as the new head coach?

Gase could’ve had just about any HC opening in the NFL. I don’t see him as the “yes” man you all claim him to be. After all, he does have complete control over the 53 man roster, something Philbin, Sparono didn’t have or couldn’t negotiate upon taking the job. At least this HC gets to shop for his groceries and Tannehill will have 1 year to show his worth (prove me wrong) or he will be gone. Gase has had a lot of success every where he’s been, lets hope that continues with him at the helm down here. I do like the idea that he will be calling the offensive plays, no one to blame the offensive X’s and O’s on but himself.

Every now and then even a blind squirrel finds a nut. And we all know how blind Ross is w the football side of this organization. The football Gods may just be in Ross’ corner this time, and even more deserving “ours”!!!

I agree with him not necessarily being a yes man…At this point having done quite a bit of research into him through interviews and the perception of him through others…he “seems” to be something more than Philbin on a psychological level, intellectual level, and a charismatic level. This is all anecdotal evidence obviously, but as it stacks up I am seeing the possibility that he “COULD” be something beyond the average Joe that Joe Philbin was…

LMFAO!!! Adam Gase, the 4th coordinator hired by this joke of a franchise. I live in Chicago half the year, seen plenty of Bears football and hear what Gase is thought of here in this great sports town.

Gase is nothing more than an QB/OC. He was hired because he had no demands like Shanahan or any other former HC would make.

This is a pure and simple “yes man” hire.

You want to see a ‘3 yards and cloud of dust” offense…cause that’s what youre gonna get. This will be an all rookie coaching staff that marches to Tannebaums commands.

With this hire, Tannebaum solidifies his control over this franchise.

    6-10 here we come!

Freak, 3 yards and a cloud of dust would have gotten us many more wins this year!!!

So much for taking their time to find the right man for the job all around. Once again it’s rush to fill the seat and it will be yet again another horrible season for the faithful !

only counter to that Waterfall is they “say” they have been doing their search since Philbin was fired, so that would be a couple of months. Not sure what the truth is…but, very quickly we’ll see if this will be a disaster or not. I’m hoping somehow, someway they nailed this one…

If what you say is true…it will be epic disaster. Not sure I agree, but it’s too soon to make a definitive answer. Thing is though, Philly wanted him bad and if he was simply willing to be a yes man, his agent isn’t and would have brokered a better deal with Philly…I can’t at this point believe a man with that much juice and his agent would cowtail when all the chips were on his side. Also, there is a somewhat crazy, aggressive nature to him that exposes itself in interviews…Philbin was a weak yes man, this guy doesn’t seem to me to be that…well see though.

I agree with your comments 100 percent
Tannebaum is the real problem in my opinion
Hickeys draft before Tannebaum was pretty good first and second round picks turned out to be great
But last year’s picks were horrible – ok the jury is still out on Parker but he certainly did not help this team until the last game of the season – I would like to know if Tannebaum had final say on each pick – I know he was in the draft room but did Hickey want other players ? The trade for stills was all Tannebaum – we gave up a third round pick for a backup receiver
Also Tannebaum tried to trade Mathews before the start of the season thankfully no one took him
    These are horrible personnel decisions
Also the Suh signing was 100% Tannebaum and the bloated unnecessary Tannehill contract were 100% Tannebaum both in my opinion unnecessary and constrain this teams CAP space
Tannebaum even bragged about not even talking to Mathis agent for the 3 months he was a free agent result the best guard in the league went to Denver and we were stuck with the absolute worst guard in the league Dallas Thomas which was directly responsible for our poor offensive line play
So overall I’m of the opinion that as long as Tannebaum keeps playing the real role of GM we will be stuck in mediocrity
We need a very strong draft this year and we also need to sign some good players in free agency to complement our draft since we cannot get everything we need in the draft but I have no confidence in Tannebaum being able to do that
I hope very badly I am proven wrong and we have the best offseason ever
I am so tired of our mediocrity these last 20 years
We have not been an elite team since the Shula days
Is this the right coach ? Or is this another Tannebaum ass kisser ? I hope he turns out to be another Shula

With all due respect about Hickeys first draft, he did take Juan James at #19, while I believe is a good player, the N.O. Saints were looking to trade up from the 27th spot, and the Hickey very easily could have traded back and still got James at 27 and picked up a extra 3rd round pick (91st overall). Instead the Cards, one pick behind Miami made the trade and got a 3rd rounder and took John Brown there. Yes, he hit on Laundry, and I guess you could say James as well. That is about it though. Turner is a bust, Tripp is gone, Hazel practice squad, Lynch is gone, Aikens = special teamer.
So in reality Hickeys first draft was not all that impressive considering. Laundry is and makes that draft, period.

…all the hype …and then the reality …sounds like the typical fins season of the past 2 decades

…seems to me like this guy was their target all along …and with the Ross/Tannenbaum track record I’m not holding my breath for the next great thing to succeed

…first of all, I don’t think they should be focusing on hiring a coach that can “improve” Tannehill …this team has a LOT worse problems than the QB …they can “fix” Tannehill until the cows come home but if the OL can’t give him time to throw or run block worth a damn, nothing will change

…I don’t see any significant changes in the FO …Hickey is gone but he was not the real problem …his replacement is a token Rooney Rule fix from inside and an evident Tannenbaum yes man …a head scout with the GM title but nil authority …nothing else appears to have changed

…so we’ve got the same owner, same FO, a rookie HC with no credible record, and a new coaching staff that doesn’t know the players …the QB will be learning his 3rd system in 3 years …and we are severely cap limited by last year’s mistakes with some of our best players becoming free agents

…and this is the formula for producing a winning team in one season so they can somehow make a real call on Tannehill? …color me not impressed …at all 🙁

Lemmus…I am doing alot of research into him and something seems to be changing my mind slightly…I originally felt like Philbust 2.0, but there are strong differences and while they are subtle, they are pronounced when spotted. There is a chance he might be the real deal…there also might be the chance he is another schmuck.
