Today is an important day

Today teams are officially allowed to begin courting free agents and then on March 10th at 4pm they can have the official contract signed. Today is where Miami needs to get their priorities in order, because the most sort after free agents on the market are going to receive the most attention today. Obviously it is not a secret that today Miami is going to be focusing on Suh.

At the moment the Dolphins have not been shy to let it known that they are going to be a serious player in the Suh market, along with the Raiders and the Colts. Suh himself has let out a small kernel of knowledge that he has a slight preference for Miami, but he also likes the idea of going to Indianapolis or even staying with the Lions. Clearly the sportsbooks would say that the Colts and Lions are further along in their quest to being a Super Bowl contender, than the Dolphins, so this may take a little appeal away from South Florida.

Today is a very important day for the Dolphins organization to get Suh back on a plane to South Florida and get him in their building, and roll out the red carpet. The teams that are the most aggressive early in free-agency usually land the players that they target. This is not the time to be hesitant and sit on your hands and see what other teams do first. However, I will say this about Ross and the Dolphins organization, they have shown that over the last few years that they have no problem getting aggressive in free-agency and shelling out extremely large contracts.

So in all likelihood Miami is going to be extremely focused on working out a contract with Suh today and the rest of this weekend, however they also need to have other people in the organization working on back up plans if they do not land Suh, and working out offers for other highly in demand free-agents. The Dolphins have a handful of positions that they badly need to upgrade such as DT, LB, CB, WR and G in no particular order. If Miami can find a way to sign Suh that would immediately take care of one of those positions, and then if they can find a starting caliber player at least one or two of the other 4 positions of need, than I would already consider the free-agency period a success. I would really like to sign Flowers, or Jackson to start opposite Grimes, and that would also allow us to not have to worry about drafting a corner back this year.

The first domino in the Dolphins free-agency plan is obviously Suh, but this weekend should give us a better idea of their other plans for their other positions of need. The organization knows what they need to improve on, so today we will get our first glimpse of their plan in actually making the upgrades a reality. Besides Suh, who else do Miami Dolphins news fans think they will target in the beginning days of free-agency?
