What the Suh deal means for the Rest of the Dolphins

sports gambling

The official start to free-agency where players can ink deals with new teams is this upcoming Tuesday at 4pm, however teams can still have formal contract negotiations with players. The Dolphins have taken the bull by the horns and barring a breakdown in negotiations Ndamukong Suh will sign a deal with the phins that will pay him approximately $114 million with $60 million in guaranteed money. The contract is expected to be for 6 years and average around $19 million a year. This beat out an apparent offer by Detroit that would have paid him on average $17 million per year with $58 million guaranteed.

Most sports gambling fans will be giving the Dolphins some credit for finally landing an extremely high in demand free-agent. Suh is the biggest free-agent on the market and Miami put it’s money where it’s mouth was and closed the deal. Heading into next season they have already drastically improved their disappointing run defense. That was probably one of the biggest if not the main reasons why Miami fell apart at the end of last season, and failed to make the playoffs. Now that they have greatly upgraded that weakness on the team, they can put themselves in a good position to make a realistic push for the playoffs next season.

After Tuesday when Suh officially becomes a member of the Dolphins, this will also most likely conclude the tenure for both Starks and Odrick as members of the Dolphins. Last year Starks proved to be over the hill, and his release will give save the phins around $6 million in extra cap space and Odrick played well but this defensive scheme is not built to fully utilize his talents as well as he was going to demand a significant pay increase. Also today Wheeler was released and shortly it will be announced that Ellerbe will be released. So sports gambling fans can basically look at the Suh signing as a swap of players and contracts with Starks, Odrick, Wheeler and Ellerbe being substituted for Suh. Those four players salaries will basically pay for Suh this upcoming season, which means that Miami will still have some wiggle room to sign other free-agents.

Miami can still legitimately afford a quality corner-back in free agency, a veteran wide receiver, starting guard, or starting linebacker. If Miami can fill one of the above positions through free-agency with a quality player, then this free-agency period would be considered a huge success. After that they can focus on drafting players for the remaining positions of need.

This was a huge statement made by the Dolphins and Suh has a chance to make our defense one of the most dominant in the league. Don’t forget that for the beginning of the season Miami had one of the better defenses in the league, so there is definitely a solid foundation in place on defense. Now adding a player of Suh’s talents and skills will make everyone else better on the defense. He will demand more blockers, which will create more space for Wake and Vernon and our linebackers. Suh will also help improve our pass rush, which also provides support to our secondary, by not giving QB’s all day to throw the ball. How does the rest of Miami Dolphins news fans feel about this momentous signing of Suh?

  • Really disappointed in Clay. We spent the time and money for him to be special, and he lets alot of fans down in a big way, plus we get nothing in return.

Hey Rex Ryan, You say you are building a bully in upstate NY? Well, the biggest bully on the block just landed in South Beach. Suh signing changes everything!!!

This 114 mil contract is a mistake. He’s a great player but does anyone think Philbin can handle his personality? And in Coyle’s DL rotation he’s likely to play only 75% of the defensive snaps, and be misused. Would anyone spend 114 mil on a QB that only played 3/4 of a game? And I don’t think Suh is in JJ Watt’s class (he’s by himself) yet he’s getting paid alot more?
This is the beginning of the end, which was already beginning when Philbin was hired.

Mass, Suh is a impact player, there is not one coaching staff member in Detroit or in Nebraska that has a bad thing to say about Suh. Sure he may play to the extreme and let his emotions get the best of him on the field, but no one has a negative thing to say about Suh off the field/locker room.
Absolute GREAT signing, will change and improve the defense and defensive players. He’s that kind of player!!!! Be excited….

First of all everyone complains about the huge contract amount. Why its not our money, it is Ross’ money, and he wants to bring in the best to be the best. Suh may not be JJ Watt but no one is, but Suh is the closest one to Watt on the defensive line. Don’t forget he will be occupying 2 blockers every play, this is going to create a lot more mismatches on the ends with Wake and Vernon. We now arguably have one of the best D-lines in the game

Couldn’t care less about Ross’ money. It’s the cap ramifications this contract has now, and will have in the future. When we can’t resign the players we want to keep, or sign other FAs in the future, or have to cut other players because of lack of cap space everyone what then? Suh is a great, impact player but he is not close to being worth this contract. This will all come to a head down the road. If Buffalo does offer Clay a nice contract, will the team now be able to match it after throwing out a 114 mil contract? Does this mean Wallace gets cut this year, instead of next which would be better capwise? What about when Vernon’s contract is up? With all the money invested in Suh will the team spend even more on the DL in order to keep Vernon?

The $114 million does not all count against the cap for 2015. As a matter of fact he may only count as 7-10 million or less against this years cap. That is a 2+ million less than Wallace and only double that of Fields. Miami got this one right, regardless. One thing about this staff, even during the Ireland debacle, Dawn Aponte and company have done a great job structuring contracts that are team friendly for current and future cap figures. Again, Excellent move!!!

Yes Dawn and her staff have done a great job with structuring contracts. I expect one more top-tier move for the phins

The salary cap issues can be managed and the cap will raise each year. Look at it from a different angle. What dynasty or for that matter what SB team managed to win without at least a few best in class players on their team. Who is the best-in-class player on the Dolphins? Maybe Wake. That is about it. Suh adds a second and enables Wake to raise his game and maybe creates a situation where Vernon and Jordan can both raise their games. Suh is a start towards what we need. And between the remainder of our cash and the draft we can get the rest.

In terms of what we give up for him – Ellerbee and Wheeler are no loss. Starks is somewhat of a loss but is headed downhill. The failure to retain Odrick is the only real loss.

Yes much agreed. Lets also remember that Suh has been a consistent ALL-Pro throughout his career. Before signing him Miami had 0, and I honestly can not even remember the last season we did have an All-Pro. Not to mention Suh’s career is on track to be a Hall of Fame career. Again what other players on our roster are potentially Hall of Famer’s? Here i will help everyone on this question, the answer is none

Suh is getting paid more because he is signing a 6 year deal opposed to J.J Watts deal which is only a 5 year deal…. Also Suh plays every down btw he doesn’t come out except for special teams (Punts)… Idk where your getting your information from btw but however you look at it this is a great move in more ways then just one

  • I’ll believe it Tuesday, still need offensive lineman maybe two

  • Samuel Duhart

Sue Will Bring Other Free Agents Aboard!!!

    • Jimmy Bourbon

Yes I agree Samuel, he could draw other talented free agents

      • Dunner

If you build it they will come. Miami is building something that has the potential to be great. Free agents will see this and follow Suh!
