Jimmy Burbon’s ‘What To Look For In 2nd Preseason Game’

We get to see Wake for the 1st this year in the 2nd Preseason Game

2nd Preseason Game needs to show improved Phins pass-rush

The 2nd Preseason game is here, and Phinsnews is in a bit of a disagreement on what to look for.

Phinsnews is a two-headed monster with two writers. M.J. has his thoughts and I have mine. Sometimes we have the same exact idea. This is a case of the same idea but different opinions.

You can check his take here.

First, the Dolphins will play in Carolina in the 2nd Preseason Game tonight at 7:30p. We will get to see the starters for more time tonight compared to the first game. Beyond everyone remaining healthy by games end, Tannehill and the pass-rush are where I’d like to see the two biggest places of improvement.

Every year the Phins tell us to expect an effective pass-rush?

M.J. and I agree that our DT’s need to show a lot more. So that means players like Phillips, Godchaux, Taylor, and Spence will have to step up. This rotation of Defensive Tackles will have to get better… and get better fast. Not being able to stop successful rushing at the heart of the defense will take a big toll on our defense… and the win totals. Also, not stopping the run prevents the defense from getting off the field. A tired defense is a beaten defense.

Pass rush is the first point where Phinsnews is divided.

I really want to see us get some pass rush against Carolina. Every year we invest in ‘pass rushing ends’ and see no results. I’m glad they will go up against a dynamic QB in Cam Newton. Newton lit up the Dolphins last season, and a running QB like Newton will be a superb test for our defense. We will get a clear picture of where we are in the pass rush tonight. Miami seems to always struggle against mobile QBs. Tonight will be a good chance to see if the pass rush flaw has changed. And with Wake playing tonight, there won’t be the excuse of misses our best pass rusher.

The 2nd Preseason Game needs Tannehill to come out and score on the 1st drive

Another big improvement needs to be with QB Ryan Tannehill, who should get to play for at least 2 offensive series. All eyes will be on him. He showed last week that the knee looks fine. That big question mark can now be labeled as a non-issue. This week, he needs to show increased leadership and get on the same page as his offensive weapons with consistency. I want to see him make some big plays, drive the team down the field, and put the ball in the End Zone. Early success has been a long-standing issue with both Gase and Tannehill. Let’s start proving tonight that that problem is in the past.

Obviously, the starters getting in synch and the ‘youngsters’ receiving reps is the most important. But wins create a winning mentality. I bet the Pats are never happy with a loss in Preseason. The various pay per head reviews sites have the Dolphins as the road underdog at +3. Football is all about winning, and nothing good comes from a loss. So a win would be a much better outcome than a loss.

What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins News fans’ thoughts or concerns going into this second preseason game?

  • Dunner

Looking for Tanny to have 15-20 pass attempts. Maybe a complete quarter or quarter and a half. Even if he scores on his first possession.
How is McCain going to play opposite the X-man? He is a fierce competitor, so I imagine he will do well.
Our practical two rookie LBers (McMillan red shirted by injury), how will they play, will they compliment each other? McMillan hopefully gets the rust off.
I would like to see Gesicki in the red zone. Put him in, move him around and get him into a one-on-one situation and throw it to him regardless.
Looking forward to seeing Howell. I like his ability to make people miss along with his acceleration.

MOST IMPORTANT; come out healthy (please)!!!

    Go Fins

There is a bunch to be excited about Dunner… but lack of discipline McMillan and Godchaux aren’t among them. They likely need to replace McMillan in base and def need to replace him in Nickel. Baker is a liability in the run game as this point. Godchaux is terrible. Phillips needs to start and Dolphins need to spend money on a DT for run downs… Langford ain’t it. Taylor is getting better though. The lack of discipline and terrible play at MLB was disappointing… Anthony might need to move there. He did decent at the spot… far better than McMillan… LB’s are a big issues, but poor DT lay is exposing them bad…

      …but we were healthy 🙂

Speaking of that, did anyone miss Parker? Nope… Grant and Amendola and even Wilson, though a bit inconsistent was a better formula.
