Jason Jones Next Wave Of Dolphins Free Agents

The next wave of Dolphins Free Agents has begun with Jason Jones.

The next wave of Dolphins Free Agents has begun with Jason Jones.

Jason Jones is a solid player brought in at a fair market price for a 1yr stop gap.

The Dolphins have been waiting patiently until May 12th passed, so they could continue to shop in the remaining free agent market without it effecting their compensatory draft picks. And now they have added another big bodied player to their Defensive Line Unit. The Dolphins have announced that they will be signing former Detroit Lions DE Jason Jones next week – maybe even as early as Sunday.

The Dolphins began the off-season by giving the Franchise Tag to their young, up and coming, DE Olivier Vernon. However, once the former Pro Bowl DE Mario Williams became available, the Dolphins decided to completely change their course by quickly signing Williams, and then rescinding their offer to Vernon. The Giants then paid a record breaking deal to lock up Vernon, a price that Miami could have never paid, even if they wanted to. However, Miami did not stop at just acquiring Williams, they have also signed Andre Branch and now Jason Jones.

So, the Dolphins parlayed the one young, talented pass rusher for another talented, older pass rusher in Williams, as well as two very solid depth players in Branch and Jones. Lastly, the Dolphins came to terms with their star DE Cameron Wake and have now locked him up for another 2 more seasons. Some sports betting fans will argue that the Dolphins have gone against conventional wisdom by getting older along the Defensive Line. However, each of these players has a chip on their shoulder, and given their superstar past, they can not be taken for granted.

The Dolphins Defensive End core has become even bigger with the addition of Jason Jones.

The Dolphins Defensive End core has become much bigger. Vernon is only listed at 6’2” 275 pounds, which makes him short next to the players Miami just brought in to replace him. Just for comparison sake, Williams is the largest of the new group at 6’6”, 292 pounds, followed by Jones at 6’5” 276 pounds and then Andre Branch at 6’5” 265 pounds. In addition, Wake is now the smallest of the group at 6’3” 270 pounds, which shows that Miami has definitely made it their goal to get bigger in the trenches. Then just for good measure, don’t forget that the Dolphins also added DT Chris Jones from New England, who in his first two seasons racked up 9 sacks, and is 6’1”, 295 pounds.

Jones is a great depth player along the defensive line, and as the New York Giants have proved in the past, a team can never have enough pass rushers. Last season, Jones chipped in 31 tackles, 4.5 sacks and 1 forced fumble. The other positive thing about Jones is that he played directly along side Suh in 2014, the same year he had his most sacks in a season at 5, which indicates they may play well together.

The Dolphins have clearly made it a point to improve their defensive line this off-season. And with the combination of the players they acquired and Vance Joseph’s attacking style defense, I believe that the Dolphins run defense and pass rush is going to be much improved this upcoming season. Now, if Miami can only go out and find a veteran Cornerback and Running Back, I would feel even more excited about the potential of this 2016 team. What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins News fans thoughts about their latest acquisition?

I think with the Zone press, you’ll 2 and 3 zones over and heavy exotic blitzes underneath…so more athletic solid players will push teams blocking depth and allow these players to drop as well to confuse. I think this is a good signing will little future implications. Alot of the reason they are left behind is because teams want them but not to bend over backwards to get them. So the players are trying to get the best situation…

…how many of these guys actually make the final roster? …there are a lot of “iffies” on the current roster

…when does Arian Foster ameliorate his salary demands and sign with someone? …be nice if it were the fins but he would probably like to go out with a winner and we don’t exactly look like one right now

…so yeah, there will be more FA signings to come …but the final roster will be bereft of many of them …Jones may look ok now but when better/cheaper/younger (take your pick) hit the waiver wire, the view might well change …there’s more than one reason these guys are still available …and I don’t think draft comps are one of them
