Is Tannehill Fit for the Lazor Offense?

Ryan Tannehill is entering his 3rd and most crucial season as the Miami Dolphins‘ starting QB, and the pressure will be at its height, because anything short of improvement or a playoff appearance will be deemed a disappointment, and most likely a demotion. Tannehill spent his entire college career and first 2 NFL seasons in Mike Sherman‘s offense, so this will be his first time in his career that he will be starting a season learning and playing in a new offense.

For all the football betting software fans that think this could cause a set back in his progression, they need to realize that Tannehill is actually better suited for Lazor’s offense than Sherman’s.

First of all, Tannehill’s path towards NFL starting QB is not like most starting NFL QBs. He played defensive back in his sophomore year of high school, before playing QB in his Junior and Senior seasons in high school. Then when he went to Texas A&M and he was the third-string QB, so instead he played wide receiver and was 11 yards shy of breaking the freshman season record for receiving yards with 844 yards. Then in his sophomore season, he still did not win the starting QB job, and continued to play receiver and led the team with 46 receptions for 609 yards and 4 touchdowns, and around 80% of his catches went for first downs or touchdowns. It was not until the middle of his junior year that he was actually able to see some time at the QB position. Then after the Dolphins selected him as their first-round pick in the 2012 draft he started all 16 games as a rookie and set the Dolphins franchise records for most passing yards in a rookie season (3,294 yards), most passing completions in a rookie season (282) and most passing attempts in a rookie season (504), and this is a franchise that has had Bob Griese and Dan Marino play for them.

The reason I laid out Tannehill’s path from high school to franchise record-breaking rookie season with the Miami Dolphins in 2012 is to demonstrate that Tannehill is a freak of an athlete. He was an extremely good collegiate receiver, who was determined to play QB, and when he finally got the chance he was able to excel. In Lazor’s offense, he will get the chance to use his legs, which have proven to be a weapon in college, and have also in 2013 set the Dolphins franchise record for the longest rush by a QB at 58 yards. Tannehill is an extremely smart young man who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology and was even planning on becoming an orthopedic surgeon. If Tannehill has the smarts to be a surgeon, then learning a new offense should not be that difficult a challenge. Tannehill has always challenged himself in his football career, so this new offense is just another challenge that he is thrilled to tackle head-on.

He has already begun to feel more at ease in Lazor’s new offense, and he seems a better fit in this offense than Sherman’s offense. In Tannehill’s first two seasons he had an issue with getting rid of the ball on time, but with Lazor’s, up to temp offense, he is being asked to speed up his release time. At first, it was hard for him to get used to, however now after a few weeks in training camp, it is visibly evident that Tannehill’s release speed has greatly improved. Sherman’s offense may have been extremely familiar and comforting to Tannehill, but it appears that Lazor’s offense is going to be able to better take advantage of Tannehill’s superb athletic ability, and doctor type intelligence. Hopefully, this new offense will help Tannehill and the Dolphins make the next step.
