How Will the Tua Injury Alter Miami’s Plans?

“Tank for Tua” was the name of the Phins game for a while

Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is a great kid with a ton of talent. Every football fan found it hard to hear about Tua’s devastating injury this past weekend. With three serious injuries in two years, the slam-dunk future star now has a huge question mark next to that exceptional talent and character.

This is why ‘banking on the tank’ is risky.

Since his season-ending hip dislocation, Tua had a ‘successful’ operation that the doctors said went perfect… Well, as ‘perfect’ as can be expected. Most PPH sportsbook services (www.AcePerHead.com) are betting the injury will certainly lower Tua’s draft position.

The question is how much will all these injuries affect his NFL career?

Before you rubber-stamp it as a certain ‘death sentence’ for Tua’s career, the same was said of ‘little known player’ Frank Gore and his two torn ACLs. So, I don’t see any outcome as definitive yet.

Steven Ross the Dolphins best QB evaluator

Owner Stephen Ross wanted to draft QB Lamar Jackson in 2018. Instead, GM Grier convinced him to go with Minkah. We all know how well that turned out.

Ross has already stated he wants to draft Tua. After last Saturday, those draft plans could be in major jeopardy. Or maybe they have become better?

First of all, there were questions about Tua’s durability before his latest injury. Now those concerns are clear red flags. Not only does he have two busted ankles with titanium in them, but also a dislocated hip as well. This is terrible news for a mobile QB.

Many football fans are aware that the great Bo Jackson had a career-ending hip injury. When the hip dislocates and it fractures off a piece of the cup, part of the hip joint it also disrupts the blood supply to the end of the femur, which is the lower leg part of the hip joint. This specific scenario is called avascular necrosis or AVN and this was the reason Bo could no longer play. The good news is many believe that Tua’s injury was addressed immediately. This means it is less likely that there was any disruption in the blood supply to the femur.

However, AVN can’t be immediately diagnosed because it takes 3 to 6 months to develop. So there’s no guarantee Tua doesn’t have AVN!

Tua could be had later in the draft with a big risk/reward roll of the dice

With the draft about 6 months away, any team that was interested in drafting Tua will likely shy away from drafting him with their top picks because of this AVN risk and his injury history. Also, there’s a chance that Tua himself may decide to use his last year of eligibility and return to Alabama for his senior year instead of entering the 2020 draft.

In the next few months, Tua’s career could go in any direction.

There’s even more to consider.

Phins receiver Albert Wilson had a hip subluxation last season in October, a month earlier than Tua’s injury. Hip subluxation is a serious injury but far less serious than a dislocation. Still, it took Wilson over a year to really get on the field. Even now Albert’s still being eased into the game. So, Tua could be two years away from playing football. That is if he ever plays again.

All of these unknowns wrapped around the known injury history jams a huge monkey wrench into the tailpipe of Ross and the Dolphins’ draft plans.

Even if Tua enters the draft, is he worth our top first-round pick?

I say no way, but all that matters is what does Ross, Grier, and Flores think?

With the Dolphins picking 4th overall behind the QB hungry Bengals and Redskins, top-ranked QB Joe Burrow won’t be an option without throwing multiple 1st Round picks to move up. This could leave Miami looking to Justin Herbert, Jake Fromm, Jalen Hurts… or maybe Tua with one of their two later 1st Round picks. Tua in the mid 1st would be a big roll of the dice, but it could end up being a big hit for cheap?

Either way, it puts Miami in a very sticky situation.

Still, anyone who has watched a lot of football will say don’t sleep on Georgia QB Jake Fromm. This guy has done nothing besides win football games at Georgia and just has the “it” factor. Fromm dots the “i” and crosses the “t” on the leadership qualities that all NFL teams are looking for in a franchise QB.

Maybe Fromm would be the safer bet if they draft a quarterback with their top-pick?

The Phins slam dunk of getting the #1 Overall and drafting a future ‘Hall of Fame QB’ has become far more complicated. This draft is must-watch T.V. for Miami Dolphins fans… and the Tua injury added the cherry on top.

What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins news fans’ thoughts about this latest development in our upcoming draft saga?

    Quarterbacks/Importance of 3rd Down Conversions

3rd downs are often the most important down for both offenses and defenses because they both have the most to gain and lose. Failing to convert a 3rd down means an offense will face 4th down, and likely be forced to punt the ball back to their opponent or attempt a field goal.

3rd down conversion is what keeps the chains moving. Admin would you say this is the number one trait a QB must possess?

Not sure how much of a role the QB play’s in the team 3rd down conversion performances

    3RD DOWN CONVERSION PC

Admin and Dol-Fans Can we say 3rd down conversion must be the number one ability/trait the Dolphins must evaluate in selecting a QB vs strong armed accuracy etc?

Who should we target? There are other QB’s not in the 1st round, no need to reached.

1st Round: Dolphins:1st Picked: Joe Burrow’s LSU Total yards 3,687 TD 38 INT 6 QBR 93.2 Total rushing yards 614

    2nd Round: Dolphins: 37th Jalen Hurts https://youtu .be/MOo9iJ8RYWM —-https://youtu.be/p6IaeTH-15M
3,039 TD 28 INT 5 QBR 92.8 Total rushing yards: 983 for the season

3rd Round: Dolphins: 68th Picked: Tyler Huntley Utah QB https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvjQew0gGBg

3rd Round: Who is Tyler Huntley’s and his QB Efficiency Total passing yards 2,397 TD 13 INT 1 QBR 89.1 and Total rushing yards 1077

This 2019 season, the Pac-12 has a host of talented quarterbacks. Justin Herbert is currently projected to get drafted in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft. Additionally, Jacob Eason earned praise for his NFL arm-strength and Anthony Gordon leads the FBS in passing yards and passing touchdowns. It’s an excellent year for

Pac-12 quarterbacks. However, based off the metrics, it is actually Tyler Huntley that is currently the top

    Pac-12 quarterback.
Lead by Tyler Huntley 9-1 1st in Pac 12 – South and the Pac 12 North is lead by Justin Hubert at 9-1 also.

6th Round: Dolphins: Anthony Gordon QB WSU https://youtu.be/–Total passing yards 4,314 TD 39 INT 11 QBR 78.8 and 34 Total Rushing yards.

    1st Round: Justin Herbert Total passing yards 2662 28 TD’s and 3 Int’s and 498 Rushing yards https://youtu.be/SToAlLc8t7Y

Very nice article, It’s unfortunate for Tua meaning his season ending this way. He really needs time to heal properly without the stress of a early returned. I’m sure he will get drafted by someone. Sad! You’re right it appears that Ross has a fill for selecting the right QB.

After Burrow’s it will be a reached for any other QB in the 1st round except for Hurst in the late 1st round. My reasoning for saying this is the Defensive players are too fast in this league for that QB needing more than 2.5 second and has no rushing scramble ability to get away from defenders.

Rosen has a nice throwing arm but cannot lacks scrambling to get away from defenders.

    • admin

I think he is a bit of nervous nelly… he need to play with more confidence and not get sped up from the pressure. He has enough move I think, like Fitz… but thinking fast is my main concern with him. He has more footspeed than Fitz, but Fitz think faster and has less of an arm. Not sure Rosen can rewire his brain though…. maybe success will build it up though.

  • STEPHEN FABRIZIO

Jimmy, excellent article. I agree, Tua is just too risky for one of our 1st round picks. I have heard from numerous people that Tua is highly talented, but is also fragile. Herbert, Fromm, or Hurst who has been a Heisman candidate are better options. Can’t waste a pick on Tua now. We need to draft to the OL & DL including DE & CB. Don’t have room for Tua unless he is a late round pick. Finally to get one of the other 3 QB’s we really can’t afford to win any more games. Need to loose out! It hurts to say that, but if we want a shot at one of those 3 we need to be no higher than our current position. Also the idea of giving Rosen more time to learn the system and build a better team around him with picks and FA $ might not be bad either. Maybe that is the plan all along. At first when I say Rosen start and then get benched I thought that Flores had seen enough and he is going to be a good QB, but not necessarily a franchise caliber. Who knows only the Ross and the top brass. I does really irk me that we could have picked Lamar Jackson but instead went with Fitzpatrick. Ross also wanted a QB during the draft Baker Mayfield, Rosen, Darnold, Allen, etc. were drafted. We took Tunsil. Not bad at #15 as we really needed a LT. Now we still do and still don’t have our franchise QB. This is all par for the course during the past 20 years of inept management!

    • admin

I agreed with most of it too, but I’m not so high on Fromm. I’d like to trade back if Burrow or Chase isn’t there actually. “but not necessarily a franchise caliber” I’m seeing that as well… he need more confidence and less nerves in the pocket, but that might be hardwired in. I never thought Lamar would be this good, but the Raven built around. They are a smart and excellent franchise.

      • Steve

Trade back if Burrow or Chase not there would be the Ideal position. I could see a trade twice in the 1st round, I’m sure Denver will go after Herbert etc?
