How Much Should Grier Embrace His 2019 Mulligan?

Grier has been given a 2019 ‘Mulligan’ from Ross, so he can fearlessly tear the team apart

Grier must cut the roster down… but how much?

Miami Dolphins owner Steven Ross has given
Chris Grier and Brian Flores the green light to ‘gut’ the former regime’s roster down to the studs–if they want.

Given that the 2019 Super Bowl will be in Miami, it’s no small feat of self-control by Ross to allow this to happen.

After twenty-plus years of dysfunctionality, another attempt to “patch” this franchise up runs the risk of repeating past failures with the ‘same ole’, same ole’ strategy.

So how deep will this ‘house cleaning’ go?

I think Grier, Allen, and Flores will cut to the bone… But I’m no Carnac the Great, so maybe it ends up merely a flesh wound? But I doubt it.

Would an excellent QB solve all the Phins problems?

If we had a Top 5 QB on the team, then a retool could work. But you don’t need the best football software for bookies (AcePerHead.com) to know Miami’s QB cupboard is sparse, so this point is moot.

This leads me to the possible course of the Phins retooling and adding a Top QB talent in 2019. A talented rookie QB, even if he is very talented, won’t be experienced and refined enough to carry the team to a championship for at least 2-3 years–bare minimum. So, a retooled team will serve Miami less down the line than if they undergo a full rebuild.

Look at the Chiefs as an example:

Patrick Mahomes is as good a young QB as you’ll find in his second season with a solid cast backing him. But, Mahomes still needs a little more refinement or a better team around him to make it to the big game. Year 3 will offer a real chance for the golden ring.

Then there’s Tom Brady, who managed a Super Bowl in his second season. But he had a good deal of luck and a tremendous team built around him.

Will we be ‘lotto lucky’ and find the next Brady or Mahomes in the 2019 Draft? Even if we do, we won’t have a top-flight group to put around him till at least 2020–At least.

Miami must focus on the long game to have the best odds for success: Years 3-5 of this regime.

Just the transition alone from the “Wide 9” to whatever 3-4 / 4-3 hybrid we move into will demand a lot of resources and a few years to install.

Even though Miami is desperate for a talented Quarterback, they must not overstretch for one in this year’s draft. A little lean forward? Okay. Sell the farm? No way. A miss on the QB acquired from a ‘mega move’ trade up could have this regime doomed before it even starts.

Patience must finally conquer desperation if this new regime wants to return the Miami Dolphins to their former glory.

‘Tanking, Gutting, Rebuilding’… ‘Lion, Tigers, and Bears, oh my’!

According to Salguero, the team discussed the possibility of ‘tanking’ this season in interviews with prospective coaches.

Now, the word “tank” has been used a lot lately to describe what the Dolphins M.O. will be in the 2019 Season. I’ve even misused ‘tank’ as well on a couple of occasions… so I’m going to clean it up.

The term “Tanking” isn’t the proper terminology and a misrepresentation of what is about to occur.

Tanking: ‘the act of giving up a match or “throwing it away”, losing intentionally or not competing.’

“Tanking” isn’t what Miami is putting into play.

Yes, the net results are the same, a losing season, but the intention isn’t to lose, rather it’s a natural by-product of cleaning out the trash.

This ‘gutting’ is about erasing the ledger of everything that hinders. CAP responsibility and proper valuation is the road to success in the NFL… and a gutting of this roster is only possible at this juncture. Unfortunately, plenty of players on this roster don’t fit that bill, so there will be carnage. The transition between what is and will be will be stark. Severe growing pains will be the result…

… But it’s best for the long-term prognosis.

At the crossroads of all things Dolphins

Mulligan; ‘A second chance to perform an action, usually after the first chance went wrong.’

This full-blown ‘Mulligan’ Ross and the fans are giving Grier won’t be valid after two drafts. There will be expectations in 2020–albeit small ones, but expectation nonetheless. So this regime must make full use of their ‘free-rein’ while they have it.

I’m sure Gase and Co. wished they had a ‘mulligan’ in Year 1.

Most coaches and General Managers never get the opportunity to come in, tear down to their liking, and build from scratch. For most regimes, it’s ‘win now’. The pressure to succeed and the CAP increasing as a team builds are an ever-tightening noose. Only winning right out of the gates keeps the hangman at bay…

… except when an owner gives you the green light to lose now in order to better the future. Grab the scissors and get to cutting Chris Grier because you won’t ever get this opportunity again–ever. Go Phins!!!

i think that the Coaches we have now will understand who the best QB’s are? I would not drafted Drew Lock in the 1st round. Wil Grier would be a solid 3rd rounder with better upside than Lock. I think Lock could be another Jay Cutler has the big Arm etc. But!

I don’t think they are better than Luke Falk!

Another option is we have Falk he was know in college as the most accurate passer etc We can add Car dale Jones and draft Tyler Cornelius in the 6th or 7th Round. I think given a season A true starter will prevail and some descent backups. If the Fins plan to Tanked make it interesting in addition the 3 Quarterbacks should not total 3 to 4 million. As a true Fin Fan I can truly watched them play and hope for the best.

I like Lock… but his accuracy… I think they need to grab a QB at some point… maybe trade back and use the free pick to get aQB later as you said. Chances that they make it though drops dramatically.

The offense is fixable if you get a QB. We need to sign our right tackle and look for clear healthy upgrades at center and guard.
Defense is a lost cause. Trade Howard for draft picks to trade up with for that QB. Cut all of the high priced old guys and deadwood underachievers.
You never know who will be let go and can help. We are a loser franchise for the last couple of decades. Let Grier work his MOJO.
If we get the QB now the team will lose for three years anyway because it is a pck of losers.

“The offense is fixable if you get a QB.”

Tunsil, with Swanson and Davis re-upped, is my hope. James needs to go through. Still, this unit needs help. LG a major priority along with RT… and depth.

Tight End and Wr is in pretty good shape… Rb as well, but their PB isn’t so hot.

“Defense is a lost cause.” Sort of. Depends do they trade Howard?

“Trade Howard for draft picks to trade up with for that QB. ” My thoughts as well… actually have that in my next article. Beyond that Howard bothers me with his three knee surgeries. That’s a little troubling.

        Hello

Chances or slim that our two Quarterbacks of choice will still be on the draft board by 13th picked. The fins should not trade up but trade back if the QB’s or taken.

IF THE OUR QB’S ARE OFF THE BOARD WE NEED TO TRADE BACK FOR MORE PICKS?
1st round Picked around 24th Jawaan Taylor offensive Tackle Florida
2nd Round picked Dexter Lawrence, DL Clemson
3rd Round Picked Tre Lamar, LB Clemson
4th Round Picked Lil’ Jordan Humphrey Wr, Texas
5th round Picked Dru Sami OG Oklahoma
6th Round Picked Tyler Cornelius QB Oklahoma State (Show’s up in the big games)
7th Round Picked Jace Sternberger, TE Texas A&M, https://youtu.be/pestdkjIYGY

Worst case scenario is that we have Luke Faulk who has not displayed his talent yet, We can obtain Nic Simonette from Washington and we can bring in Cardale Stewart from the Chargers.

Undrafted free agents right after the draft.

Which QB do you like? Do you think any are worth moving up for? Just edited Jimmy’s article and published it on QBs…I kinda’ have looked at them… but don’t love any of them to move far up… or move up at all.

            Admin

I really like Kyler Murray I was talking about him last 2018 season. I like Dwayne Haskins on a serious Note they are the only 1st round Quarterbacks in this draft. Some teams will get burned for not doing there home work.

Other than looking the part what has the other Quarterbacks done?

Trading up to number 3 with the Raiders: What would it cost?
Trading up to number 8 spot will not guarantee we get either?

If they are off the board just trade back for more draft picks. I really like Taylor Cornelius from Oklahoma State he is mobile,he will show up for the big games.

The problem with us Admin is the Dolphins were committed for 7 season on Tannehill. I stated last summer that if Gase was going to backed on Tannehill that he would be out of a job.

            😊
