Holy Cow! Phins Pull Mega Trade for Stills & Tunsil

This Tunsil mega-trade brings the promise of great reward… or regret

Just when you thought it would be a smooth ride into the Regular Season given Jadeveon Clowney is in Seattle, the Tunsil trade plotline reemerged in the biggest Phins trade since Ricky Williams.

This time though we are on the receiving side of the picks.

Wow!

Kenny Stills, Laremy Tunsil, a 4th Round pick in 2020, and a 6th rounder in 2021 are heading to the Texans for a 2020 and 2021 1st Round pick, a 2021 2nd Round pick, CB Johnson Bademosi, and OT Julie’n Davenport.

Two things are absolutely clear:

We are stocked with blue-chip, draft picks for the next two years…

… And the Phins 2019 Offensive Line could end up being compared to the disastrous Phins 2017 Offensive Line like a crack whore next to Ms. Universe…

… That’s a doubly scary picture…

… unless this Front Office and staff are oozing with brilliance.

Is another trade for a Left Tackle on the horizon? The situation doesn’t bode well for the present, but the future couldn’t be much brighter.

Regarding Tunsil and Stills…

The loss of Tunsil on this O-line can’t be underestimated. He was by far the most talented player on the most crucial unit in the game. But, as we said in our Clowney/ Tunsil trade article, “He is a very good pass blocker… not so much at run blocking where he is average. His PFF grade of 79.5 is slightly diminished by his RB grade of 62.3, especially for a team that favors running the ball.”

This along with the ton of nicks he’s had meant Tunsil was very valuable, but not irreplaceable.

Three blue-chip picks are plenty of ammo for even a competent Front Office to turn this trade into a big win.

Of course, this is all dependent on what Grier does with the ammo.

What can be said about Stills? No much. Talented, but he challenged the owner and the leadership of the Head Coach. The writing on the wall was etched by Stills with a chisel.

Say what you want, this regime keeps you on your toes

We wrote back when Grier made the trade of Rosen, Tannehill, and Quinn that the new GM ‘wheels and deal’ brilliantly. This is a Hershel Walker (light) type deal. Grier won on raw value. Even if you think the Phins will screw it up, you can’t deny that all these picks bring promise.

It is clear now that Grier has fully embraced the 2019 mulligan. Phinsnews believes Grier has been masterful.

The most immediate question now is, how much can the staff coach this squad up to prevent them from being a laughing stock? Miami must keep the ‘spirit of the tank’ from the lockerroom. And then there was this talk of revolt should Tunsil be traded.

That’s okay there are plenty of picks to replace the rebels.

My hope has been that Flores gets at least six wins in 2019 to prove the pay per head services like www.AcePerHead.com wrong. This would be enough to show me Flores can coach players up. Now though, given massive a loss Tunsil is, 6 wins will prove himself an excellent Head Coach.

Grier has done all that could be done… and more

Back in January, when Chris Grier was hired, many were saying he deserved patience. I vehemently rejected this stance. Instead, I wrote that ‘football is all about earning, nothing is deserved… except for a fair evaluation and patience through the process’.

We still need to see what he does going forward, but so far, Grier has earned an increased measure of my patience.

Also, beyond these picks, by next year the malignancy of Mike Tannenbaum will be all but expunged. Think about all that Grier has done to untangle the ugly past.

Love the deal or not… here we are.

Wow!

Go Phins!!!

    Admin!

What is the upside winning 6 game’s and 4 to 5 games away to gaining the number one picked?

Not making the playoff is a failed season. So just loose right.

It should be against law the to asked a quarterback to just get killed for the season, and OH! By the way you will get traded at the end of the season.

If I was their QB this season I would not take a sacked because the ball will not be in my hand.

This no one’s job is safe regardless of their performance can back fire on the dolphins? There 2020 1st round picked can just refused to play for the Dolphins? Be careful!

Tanking 101: 4 College Quarterbacks and all four are severely overlooked.

I love myself some Costello! Most likely a second rounder Pro ready Coach very well and can carry his team.

What else can you asked Jalen to do? Last season he was listed by the experts a 50th picked in the NFL draft if he declared for the draft. In the right Duo threat QB system friendly you will see Jalen in the Super Bowl.

Jalen Hursts GETS know respect he only wins.

I commend Andy Reid for his Talent assessment insight. Too many coaches allow the media to instruct how and who to draft.

You know this is my weakest area… you nailed Stidham… I’ll look over these guys and start to try and build my acumen in this area… Next year seems like it will be the year of the QB.

    TANKING 101:

Andy Reid was sure about his talent assessment to go after this player. All of the Experts had Mohomes as A second rounder.

K.C. traded the No. 27 overall pick, a third-round pick and their 2018 first-round selection to the Buffalo Bills to move up to No. 10 to select Mahomes.

Pretty crazy weekend, eh, Steve… can’t keep up with the news. This regime has balls for sure… couple f days we’ll start to find out if they have brains to match.

  • Steve

LET’S KEEP IT REAL THIS IS TANKING 101

Tua Tagovailoa and Justin Herbert are at the top of what should be a heavy 2020 NFL Draft quarterback class.
The beginning of last 2018 college football season the two names listed above were on the list for top QB’s.

Kyler Murray was not on any one’s list but finished the season outperforming both of them Kyler won the Heisman and was the number one picked in the draft.

That being said Tua plays on one the top college team in the nation which is Bama. His deep ball is very good etc. Herbert has all of the tools that you asked for in a quarterback.
Tua has an injury problem staying healthy and when really pressure is not as effective. Asked our number one draft picked Clemson Defensive player Christian Wilkins. Matter a fact asked about both Bama’s Quarterbacks.

Herbert has the tools but does not handle pressure well either.
Jake Fromm, Georgia is an excellent game manager and accurate but does not have a deep threat and most likely will be a very nice back up, He no sloucher.

If the fins possess the number one picked: Then it must be the best QB who may not be on this list above.

I don’t think the aim is to tank, Steve. I see it as a purge and clean install… with the net result being one step back for one step forward. Tanking is about losing purposely. Beyond Taylor, every move has brought the Phins a better future. Taylor is the only net loss. Now, if they coach to lose, then I’ll agree. I still say this Oline is good enough for 6 wins… if this team has good to elite composure, discipline, and coaching.

      • Steve

6 wins is too many wins, it would defeat the purpose of going after the number one picked.

        • admin

I don’t think that’s the goal. I think this isn’t a tank and it’s simply a clean install. I think let go of players who weren’t the best fit. I need to see the game obviously this week, but so far, I see a tough team that has been disciplined and has played with one arm tied behind it’s back with a ton of lower-tier players starting. I think this is a scheme and process thing that most are confused about. I think Grier is a good and honest man and if they are tanking, then he is a total liar. I see this team getting to six wins… of course, the reality could shatter this ‘seems’ if they come out undisciplined, lifeless, and confused.
The road less traveled appears crazy to most… and often it is a disaster. But, when this road is taken and finds success it is called brilliance. So, after Week 1, I’ll have much better view of this…

  • Soooo’…all the “Professionals” predict the Dolphins to win 3-4 games this year. Let em’ ! At least we are not going to have to endure another year of being in a mediocre holding-pattern. What good is 9-7 if you never go to a playoff game year after year. As for the trades, most of us knew what the team was in for this year anyway. You all know that the HC wants to run. Otherwise, why bring in a FB ? Is there anyone that felt good about having Sterup at LT ? If they’re going to rebuild – REBUILD ! And it seems that is precisely what they are doing ? After this year, we’re into a new decade. A NEW decade. Onward and upward. Those that love the Dolphins are guardedly optimistic, those that don’t will whine and criticize – as usual. I, for one, am anxious to see how they do. Why not ?

    • admin

Whew, Fred this has been one wild ride! They cut Sterup… and now Taylor! I’m on board with it all… except Vincent… so, so surprised. Yeah, brother… this Week 1 game has my interest level notched up to 11!!!! Crazy stuff… hope it ends up smart stuff…

    • admin

      “mediocre holding-pattern.” I’m stealing this line… sweet…

  • Fritz

Meaningful football is back yeah! I’ll be at the season opener cheering on my Dolphins.
This shake up was long overdue. Get rid of overpaid vets and bring in young hungry guys looking to make a name.
I’m disappointed over the Tunsil trade, but I completely understand why it happened. I just hope Grier does not squander those picks. If he hits on them, then the big moves would have been worth it. Unfortunately Kiko is gone but he saw he no longer fit. Stills had to go, his production did not match his rhetoric.
I think Flores is smart to start Fitz instead of Rosen. Rosen will play this season, that’s a certainty. Probably after the bye week. It makes no sense to shatter his confidence for good throwing him out there too early. We will see enough of him to make a sound decision.

Salguero of the Miami Herald keeps trashing every move, but he of all people must know that the old way was not working and change was needed. Flores and Grier, like it or not, have brought change. The results will be seen.

So the O-line is still a mess, but it will get fixed in 2020. The QB situation will be settled by 2020 or 2021.
I hope the Dolphins will wait until 2021 to draft Trevor Lawrence if he continues to develop and look good against the top competition. I’m just not convince Tua or even Hebert are going to be the answer. With the draft capital in 2020, fix as much around the QB as possible. In 2021 with the extra 1st rounder, go get Lawrence.

Lots of media people keep saying “Tank for Tua” but I don’t think that should be the strategy. Look at his stats against strong opponents and that should tell the story. I’m not saying he won’t be a good QB. I’m saying we should not give up draft picks to go get him.

Defense, believe it or not, is going to be the strength of the 2019 Dolphins. Thank goodness the “Wide Nine” is gone. Flores being a defensive mind will be reflected in this team.

Lastly, I am being cautious about my opinion of Flores. I think he is a good man and has some good ideas. I will wait to see him coach a few games before I anoint him. I thought Philbin was it, I was wrong. Then I thought Gase would turn things around, wrong again. This time, we shall see. So far, the early indications are positive.
Go Dolphins! Surprise everyone and beat the Ravens.

Hey, FitZ!!! Sorry for the delayed response… I thought I replied and got tangled up in all the news. Glad to hear from you!
“This shake up was long overdue. Get rid of overpaid vets and bring in young hungry guys looking to make a name.”
This is thoughts as well… not sure if this regime has the ability to equal the quality of this process, but it’s the right one and long overdue.
“Salguero of the Miami Herald keeps trashing every move, but he of all people must know that the old way was not working and change was needed. Flores and Grier, like it or not, have brought change. The results will be seen.”
I think many beat writers like to complain and are also once bitten after believing and being wrong so many years. The only move I quetion is Vincent Taylor.
“So the O-line is still a mess, but it will get fixed in 2020. The QB situation will be settled by 2020 or 2021.”
Agree… but even with Tunsil getting traded maybe the Ol won’t be as bad as it looks. If this Oline can focus on it’s strength and play smart ball, I don’t see it being any worse than previous year and maybe even better. This Oline can be okay if the D is good, they play smart and patient football. Most teams will beat themselves if you just play smart. I still say this team can get to six wins and that would be a feat and hope for the future when more talent is brought in.
“Defense, believe it or not, is going to be the strength of the 2019 Dolphins. Thank goodness the “Wide Nine” is gone. Flores being a defensive mind will be reflected in this team.” Agree… Wide 9 was so aweful… Gase was brain dead to stick with it.
“Lastly, I am being cautious about my opinion of Flores. I think he is a good man and has some good ideas. I will wait to see him coach a few games before I anoint him. I thought Philbin was it, I was wrong.” Philbin lost me at the gum on the ground thing… but I did believe in Gase Year 1… So, I feel you.
Man, there is so much to talk about and study with these Phins… I’m overwhelmed.

      • Fritz

Thanks for your feedback. I always look forward to your articles.

        • admin

Thanks, Fritz… you and Steve are the last of the old guard that were here when I started writing for Phins… glad you both are still around. I fear the worst for Lemmus… Hope to hear from Dunner this season…

My initial reaction was WTF! More I think about it the more it makes sense. Here’s how I’m justifying it.

    1) Tunsil shines much brighter because the team is so bad. Peel back the layerd and you have injuries, great pass pro, serviceable run blocking, but not a hall of fame talent yet. Hard to replace but definitely not irreplaceable.

2)Rosen is not the guy. He can be a franchise QB, but not the upside they had hoped. They’ll probably let Rosen showcase hos talent later this season to up his trade value. So another 2nd or 3rd or tradeup is in the future

3)Tua will be the future QB. Key point, Tua is a lefty. This devalues LT since his blindside will be RT responsibility. Much easier to fill the RT and lower price tag. Getting Tua is a LT cap savings.

This year is a tryout year for cheap young overachievers who’ll be hungry and happy to get their opportunity.

Let’s keep it to only 2 wins for Tua.

Get the lunch pale talent figured out and then draft safe bets not reaches in 2020 & 21 and resist the urge to drop big money in free agency and in 3yrs we will be a playoff team or back to square 1 with another regime change.

I do like the Florest/Grier team. They get it, and have the balls to pull the trigger. No guarantees, but we have a higher probability if turning this thing around with them than any of the recent leaderahip knuckleheads.

    • admin

The trade was all but irresistible… too many picks.
“They’ll probably let Rosen showcase hos talent later this season to up his trade value. So another 2nd or 3rd or tradeup is in the future” I can buy this.
“This devalues LT since his blindside will be RT responsibility. ” Very good point… I didn’t think of this, but wished I had 🙂 I’m not a fan of Tua… but evaluating college QB is one of my weaknesses.
“Get the lunch pale talent figured out and then draft safe bets not reaches in 2020 & 21 and resist the urge to drop big money in free agency and in 3yrs we will be a playoff team or back to square 1 with another regime change.” I’m with this as well…

I do like Grier/ Flo at ton, although the of Vincent Taylor was a big headcratcher… my first Ohhh nooo, moment. Wonder why? What do you think?
