There is no mystery that Reshad Jones is one of the best safeties in the NFL. A couple of years ago, he made a bold proclamation that he was the best safety in the league. Over the last two years, he has backed up that bold statement with tremendous on the field play. Any NFL fan that has watched a Dolphins game over the last 2 years can testify that Jones jumps off the film.
Jones is entering the prime of his career and having a true partner in crime to play beside him at the other safety spot would be one way for the back end of the Miami D to take the next step into greatness. Louis Delmas is a great compliment to Jones, however, Delmas has suffered more injuries than Cavity Sam from the Operation Game. I think they would be a great tandem, but the Dolphins have tried to count on Delmas for the last two seasons, and in both years he suffered a season-ending injury – last year he played in zero games. Unfortunately for the Dolphins, they can’t count on Delmas being able to stay healthy next season, so they should look outside the team for help because Aikens and Thomas are both extremely raw.
One possible stud safety that will be a free agent this off-season is Reggie Nelson of the Cincinnati Bengals. Even though he is 32 years old and on the last leg of his career, he still is one of the best safeties in the league. His prowess is confirmed by his pro bowl season last year and league-leading 8 interceptions. Not only is he one of the best safeties in the league, but he has a direct tie to the Dolphins Defensive Coordinator Vance Joseph, who was Nelson’s Defensive backs coach in 2014 and 2015. Fins are far more in need of a shut down CB than another S. Your primary pass coverage comes from CB’s, N, D, and LBs.
Fins have tremendous needs everywhere, not excluding QB.

These Corners are not over price and most likely would be an up grade for the Dolphins? Artie Burns I think if he stayed another year in college would come out a 1st round pick but then the Dolphins need to better developed their players also.
Cornerback selection:
Most practicle selection would be for Miami to trade out of the 1st pick for more picks. ( Maybe the fins could get another second rounder then the most Practical pick:
Eli Apply Ohio State would be a late 1st rounder rated about 29th pick.
Most of the best Cornerback would be in the late second early 3rd round.

Let’s face it we have to probably pick up at least 2 players in free agency as a minimum . I’ve said it before and it’s only common sense that we cannot fill all our holes from the draft
So if we can make the price right by all means let’s go try and get him

You can always release Aiken or Thomas to make more CAP space
I am feeling more and more that Vernon is gone…and not spending 15 mill on him could garner 3-5 good players and that might be a better option. Not say Nelson should be one of them, but at the right price he should be in the running – Aiken and Thomas aren’t and never will be in his ballpark. It from a scheme stand point might ease the need to get a top flight CB immediately. It’s something that should be at least considered.
If OV is gone, and I’m not quite sure is going to be, that would allow us to sign a extra player or two. I would like to see him stay, signing your own builds winners. However; the thought of signing a CB, Safety, Guard in his place sounds intriguing. That would almost force our hand in the first round though, drafting a DE.
The more I study the draft, the more I am in favor of trading down. The Rams have 2 second round picks, and they are drafting at 15 in the first. A swap could get us an extra second.
I am now starting to share your belief Admin, that OV is on his way out. The signing of DL/DE Canadian standout Cleyon Laing may just be the insurance needed for OV’s departure. That may also mean that we may wait on a DE in the second and/or 3rd rounds. The icing of the signing was that 5 other teams gave him offers, including the JETS and PATS….. Yes, at least we beat the PATS/JETS to the punch!!! Win #1 over our divisional opponents in 2016.
Dunner, to me when they went and extended Wake, given all their holes, 20 million between two ends and another 19-28 million for a DT seemed to much for this regime. We’ll see – but Gase stated he was going to focus this season on the offense and 15 mill to Vernon seems too much. I think you are right a DE in the 2-3 rd.
