Florida taxes and what we see from the Dolphins tagging Clay and Eying Suh

The Dolphins decided to use the rarely used transition tag on unrestricted free agent Charles Clay, which guarantees them the right of first refusal to match any offer the player may make with another team. This transition tender is worth $7.01 million for the 2015 season and in all likelihood will be signed by Clay.

This is a smart move because it will at least give Miami one more year to see if Clay can regain his 2013 form where he had 69 receptions for 759 yards and 7 touchdowns. Clay is a fierce competitor and was unfortunately slowed down last year with a year-long knee injury. However, what positively stood out last season was that even though he was banged up all year he still was able to play 14 games, which shows his toughness. If Clay can finally get healthy this off-season, then he should be able to get back on track and continue to improve on being one of the better tight ends in the league, and if he does not, then at least Miami has not succumbed to an expensive long term contract.

In addition, Dion Sims was able to use Clay’s injury to his advantage by using the added playing time to carve a niche for himself in Miami’s offense by providing the team with a viable seam threat. He was able to catch 24 passes for 284 yards and 2 touchdowns. If he can continue to improve over the off-season, then Miami could be poised to have a very dangerous TE combination with a healthy Clay. Lastly, this means the Phins will most likely not draft a TE, since they will have Clay, Sims, and even Arthur Lynch (he should be back from his back injury).

The Detroit Lions have decided not to use the franchise tag on DT Ndamukong Suh, which means he will be testing the free-agent market. After the season ended, we suggested that the Dolphins should strongly consider making a strong push at Suh, because he would immediately upgrade Miami in the trenches of their defense, something they desperately need. Now inside sources are telling us that Miami is on the shortlist of possible destinations for Suh to play next year.

One unique advantage that the Phins have over most teams is that the state of Florida along with Tennessee and Texas have significantly lowered state taxes, which is something that a player who is poised to cash in on a $100+ million dollar contract will strongly take into consideration. Lastly, Mike Tannenbaum now has an official head title in the organization, so he may try to make some power moves this off-season, considering he was not shy in being aggressive when he was the GM of the Jets. With the Dolphins already clearing between $12-$15 million in cap space and them heavily considering clearing more with a possible departure of Wallace, this could be the Dolphins underlining plan to make a serious push for Suh.

The only thing I don’t like with that kind of move is we really don’t have a WR corp anymore not to mention we won’t have much left to address our biggest need….LB

There is still more cuts to come Ellerbe, Wheeler, Starks (and getting Suh would mean Odrick gone as well) so this will create more cap space and room to address another quality player at a position of need
