ESPN Gives Dolphins No Respect In 2017

No respect given to the Dolphins by ESPN

No respect given to the Dolphins by ESPN

ESPN respects Miami as much as the bottom of a barrel

The NFL 2016 Season is in the books.

It ended with the Atlanta Falcons rolling out the red carpet for the New England Patriots comeback with some horrific play calling. It was a train wreak in slow motion. because even though the Patriots were down 3 scores, most fans had the uneasy feeling that a comeback was coming.

Now, it’s all about 2017.

ESPN has already released their 2017 power rankings, and unsurprisingly, the Dolphins get no respect.

Miami was given a rank of 21st  in power rating — the bottom third of the entire league.

I say unsurprising because ESPN (among many others) constantly disrespects the Dolphins, only showing respect to the same handful of “darlings” each season.

However, based on the Dolphins winning double digit games last season, making the playoffs, and having a young team, you’d think the Real Bookies like pay per head bookie service betting odds would wager that Miami should be a decent team next year.

Think again.

Even though the Dolphins seemed to have turned the corner under the guidance of Coach Adam Gase, ESPN isn’t buying it.

It appears Miami will need to have to string together several successful seasons to get respect

I get some of the disrespect in years past. The Dolphins have been mediocre at best in recent years. But, the Dolphins are not even being ranked with teams that had a .500 percent record. Instead, they are tossed to the bottom of the barrel with teams that are all sub .500 percent records.

ESPN just gave Miami bulletin board material they can shove down their throats…if they beat their low expectations.

That’s what it’s going to come down to — again: proving the naysayers wrong by winning.

If Miami want to be respected they need to make the Playoffs and win a game. Plain and simple.

The Dolphins showed last year that they could overcome the doubters and haters.

But, last year is last year. And right now, last year means doodly-squat to the 2017 season.

The Dolphins have some very nice pieces in place. But, they have a lot of work to do, if they want to shatter expectations, once again.

Miami has the right Head Coach. But, can Mike Tannenbaum and the rest of the Front Office prove to be Gase’s equal? If this off-season does end up successful, there’s no reason not to think that Miami can’t once again be in the playoff hunt next year. But, as with changing the expectations, Tannenbaum must prove it. What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins news fans thoughts about ESPN’s 21st ranking for the Dolphins 2017 season?

    Hey!

Still a Dolphin Fan always in Baghdad, Iraq now. Did not see the Supper Bowl game but heard about it. I don’t want to but Brady and Bill a cheat have earned greatness!
Until the Dolphins can consistently defeat the Patriots they are still Mediocre!

The key to our success will have to come from taking a QB from the Draft who has proven to bring his team back consistently. Like always the experts are off the point.

The QB who has not had the best of talent around him managed to defeat Clemson and Pen State plus a shoot out with Syracuse throwing I think 4 or 5 touch downs. I wrote about him in November 2016. Noted he was rank in the 7th round in November 2016.
    Is

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan)- Former Pitt quarterback Nate Peterman has created quite a buzz with NFL Draft

Like Brady the QB has to have it. Defense must come first because who have we really stop!

  • Lemmus

    …ok, Dunner the fanboy 🙂

…you followed the script, crossed all the Ts and dotted all the Is …hit every possible positive point and steamrolled every negative

    …but to what avail?

…we’re all die-hard fin fans here …well, most of us anyway …and the JB/MJ combo drills us on those points regularly …it’s a fan site after all, eh

…we need to look a bit askance at a FO led by the guy repped with single handedly destroying the Jests …so far, I’m not buying into the notion that he has “seen the light” …when he delivers an OL that can protect the QB as well as consistently lead RBs through opposing DLs, we can talk …so far, three years in, he’s 0-3 at it…and that’s with Tunsil literally falling into his lap

…TH has 2 serious injuries which they hemmed and hawed about forever until it was too late to do anything serious about it without losing him for the entire season …so now we’re told that all will be …well maybe …but then maybe not

…Alonzo is a good outside LB playing the middle …and the 2 we have starting outside couldn’t start for probably at least 20 other NFL teams

…Wake is/was a great DE …but he’s playing a position where age and injuries decimate most

…Williams is gone and, so far, it remains a position of need

…thus both ends of our DL are in doubt

…and the middle is getting a whole lot of cap for middling along

…then there are the DBs who were butchered twice by Brady …we’re betting on the come at all 4/5 slots …we will win some of those bets …but all of them?

…you could be right …for once …FO hits on every cylinder …ironman returns …and Gase doesn’t have a sophomore slump, not to mention the new DC …but I’m more than a bit sceptical

…I truly hope you are right …I lived through ’72 …like to live to see a repeat, eh …its long, long overdue …and I’m getting long in the tooth waiting 🙂

    • Dunner

Remember Lemmus, you are going to have to pull off some of your incredible draft night shenanigans again this year. Tunsil last year, who is going to be this year?

      • Lemmus

…wife made me swear off the shenanigans after last year …made me hard to live with
…but then she’s been saying that for going on 40 years, eh 🙂

        …bears some thinking

…all the teams at the top of the draft need interior OL so the pickings will be slim to none at #22 if we don’t fix it in FA …and there is no chance in hell Tannenbaum would take a guard there anyway

…and then there’s TH and his knee …but even the best QB in the draft this year would have likely been a 2nd rounder last year …alas, still no magic moment potential

…best give it a rest until after FA results are in, eh

        • Lemmus

…btw, MJ …the new post order makes it a mite hard for an old curmudgeon like me to follow the thread …just sayin’

Sorry, been running a crazy schedule…do you mean the 3×3 layout? You liked the vertical look better? Sorry, I’m not in charge of that…tell me more and I’ll do my best to pass it along. Your last suggestion were passed along an made headway.

Maybe it drove Steve off…haven’t heard form him in a dog’s year…

          • Lemmus

            1) no reply button to reply to your posts …have to reply to my own?
            2) the sidebar list was easier to follow imnsho …now I have to scroll back to the bottom to read other post replies
            3) the post history is now latest first which can be nonsensical if you came in late
            4) the interleaving of replies is an old conundrum …if the sidebar was there it would be easier to follow

…as always, worth what it cost ya

I’m looking into it Jimmy is going on Vaca I’m sending him a message about it…and we will talk. I’ve been jammed up with an intense new gig…I owe you a bit of thanks for it. GREAT gig, but it’s consuming. I’m working on it, but I don’t make the decisions…but, I do have influence.

  • Dunner

Wow. You would think we had another 6-10 season and this roster is in shambles. Not the case with either. As a matter of fact, I will remind all that this roster is the second youngest in the league. Due to many injuries and lack of production, majority of this roster, starter or not, got a lot of experience this past season, that alone will go a long way towards consistency.

As far as strength of schedule, the same could be said heading into the 2016 season. All it takes is a key injury to a team or two, or a team or two take a unexpected step back (always happens) and that theory is out the window. Bottom line is that Miami must protect their house, something they did very well under Gase, going 6-2. Also, Miami must win in their division, another factor that Miami did well under Gase, going 4-2. If Miami has continued success in those 2 areas, they again will be in the post season regardless of their schedule.

As far as building an offensive line, it takes players. Gase may have been influenced by Tannebaum and company initially, but he did rectify the shortcomings and that also helped send a message to the rest of the team. Gase expects players to be accountable, not only on game days, but throughout practices on a daily and weekly basis. When 2 new guards are brought in (predicting Albert to be released), we will see the makings of a good O-Line. I thought Gase and company did ok with the O-Line considering. Pouncey out, James played and practiced horribly until benched, 2 converted Tackles at guard (1 being a rookie). I have a feeling the O-Line is going to be a strength this coming season (assuming Pouncey plays 16 games).

The offense will only get better. A offense that was pretty darn good already (and with 2 new guards and a game changing TE, like Howard, this offense WILL BE TOP 5). The defense will be better, and how much better may be the difference between a wild card or a division title. Just the return of Jones and Isa will be huge. So unlike you Lemmus, I just don’t see where this team takes a step back. As a matter of fact, this team should be much improved. Second year under a HC that gets “it” and knows “it”. Players know what to expect, know the offensive system, know the defensive system. They gotten a taste of the playoffs, I can now see these players coming back hungry for another post season run.

ESPN did the same last year, if I recall correctly I thought they predicted a 5-11 season. With all the injuries, a new scheme and they still had a 10-6 season. There is no reason for decline here, every team wins close games, the Pats shouldn’t have won the Super Bowl, another close win. 10-6 is the bench mark, so yes, I am expecting a better record next season and another playoff run. This team is closer than most Miami fans realize, and definitely closer than the ESPN experts realize.

As I said below Dunner, this schedule seems to be of even higher degree than last year. That could be the root of this disrespect, but Gase is a great foundation, but they need to nail this Ol…which they haven’t done in forever and they need to find a LB and DT and DE…it’s close to 5 quality players — at least — that’s on order. It will be a crossed fingers and clinched jaw off season. Tannebaum does well…he is a king, if he doesn’t, this franchise will take two steps back. I’ll believe he can, till proven otherwise. I give him B- B- for last year…he needs a higher grade this year…but will have less bullets.

  • Lemmus

…until we can actually contend for the AFC East title head to head with the Pats, we’ll get no respect …and deserve what we get

…right now, we have a questionable/injured QB, a poor OL, a run on defense, a 2nd year HC, and one of the toughest schedules for 2017 …so yeah, I get ESPN’s current ranking …don’t like it but reality bites

…we had a relatively easy schedule last year and an ironman QB …both of those are issues for the coming season …and I just don’t trust the FO or Gase when it comes to fixing the OL …Gase started the turnstile twins at Guard and talked them up all pre-season …after 4 games he up and fired them, ok …but what fault in judgement led him to think they were the answer to begin with? …and did he learn anything?

…we’ll find out come August, but I see no reason to believe either the FO or the HC know how to put an OL together …pray I’m wrong

…sure, we went 10-6 last year …but that was then and the current rankings are a fair look at our prospects for the coming season …and we have a lot of holes to fill …many of them the same ones we tried to fix last off season and, for the most part, failed

…yes, as a HC, Gase is overall a big step up …and we found a RB …but otherwise, we have a lot to do before we’re going to contend every year …in mnsho

…go 10-6 again, or better, and win a playoff game …then we’ll have earned some respect

    • admin

agree in all ends, but 21st seems a bit low. But, yea they need to prove it by winning a playoff game…I dont think they need to knock the Pats off the hill…not sure I see that happening. But, they just need to be a quality team to get respect. The more I look at the more I see that they need a b+ or better off season to make dent this year..anything less and they will fade again. It’s just that this schedule will take a darn good team to overcome.
