Due Diligence Or Real Interest: Phins Meet QB Jackson

Lamar is a player who could use some development… perfect for the Phins situation

Lamar could use the remaining two years of Tannehill’s contract to develop

The ‘wish-talk’ on Miami’s 2018 draft revolves around a QB in the first round. Baker Mayfield is usually the name attached to those wishes.

Reality is that unless Mayfield’s stock takes a sudden hit, he’ll be selected well before Miami gets on the clock at #11. A couple of weeks ago, Phinsnews wrote about the Mayfield trade up being nothing but a pipedream here. So unless Mayfield does fall he won’t be an option for Miami.

Instead, a more practical approach is Miami seriously considering a QB’s anywhere from round 2 to 4.

With that being said, Phins brass, along with Dan Marino, recently met with electrifying QB Lamar Jackson. Not for nothing, but I have already expressed–over and over–my man crush on Jackson and prefer him over any other QB in the draft.

Yeah, love can be blind… but it can also be spot on, too.

No doubt Jackson is a raw prospect. However, fans and per head sportsbook software alike won’t deny his talent and potential.

Miami has already committed money to Ryan Tannehill for the upcoming 2018 and 2019 season. Wouldn’t a QB needing development be a terrific option? Two years to sit and learn behind Tannehill might be the perfect situation to work out his mechanics. Despite a poor 2017 Season, many still believe Gase is an excellent QB Coach. If Gase is as good as he was billed to be, he’d become an instant star if he could develop all that potential.

Jackson would a HUGE hit if he pans out

Many analysts feel that Jackson will be the 5th or 6th QB selected in the draft and depending on how the first 10 picks go. A late first rounder or early second round pick seems likely. He will be available when Miami is on the clock with the 11th pick, but that could be too high a pick to gamble on him.

Miami could end up trading back, then a Jackson pick would be a better fit with that later pick or at #42.

But if Miami does like Jackson and decides to wait till later than #11, they could lose out on him. Teams like the Patriots, Cardinals, Steelers or Saints either need or could use a QB. I also have wondered if the Browns pass on a QB with their two top picks, might they trade back into the 1st to get Jackson? Tyrod Taylor would be a perfect teacher for Jackson. Both players have a similar skill set and the offensive gameplan would run seamlessly in a transition.

Like I said love is blind… but sometimes it’s right on the mark. I believe in Jackson… what do you think?

Yes! Jackson would be a nice selection in the first round. Nic Shimonek has my vote in the 5th to 7th round.

An NFL general manager of a team who is in the market for a future starting quarterback said that Texas Tech quarterback Nic Shimonek was his favorite signal-caller at the East-West Shrine this year. Scouts from other teams have echoed that sentiment, as they feel that Shimonek has the most arm talent. Shimonek threw some nice passes on Tuesday, although the West receivers were rather underwhelming in their ability to get separation. Shimonek was only a 1-year starter for the Red Raiders, so impressing evaluators this week was important, as some teams shy away from quarterbacks with little starting experience. Shimonek is a day-three sleeper who could continue to rise during the pre-draft process.

I’m not sold on Jackson, but I haven’t watched him enough… I don’t like that raw of a QB with a 1st… if somehow he fell to the 2nd DAMN STRAIGHT. Jimmy is stuck on the kid… and I always edit down his fawning… on this article he demanded his ‘true romance’ be made known… I personally think they should get Shimonek and one in the middle rounds. I’d be cool with missing on a mid round talent to roll the dice on a couple of rookie QB’s. We need to make many rolls to hit… so start now. I really don’t want Allen though. I’m probably wrong… college QB’s are my kryptonite. I think when I see Pro tape I’m a better evaluator, but translating from college to Pros is a real weak point for me.

No worry Admin, it is a real weak point for a lot of GMs in the NFL as well, ie: Browns, Ireland!

OHHHH… Lemmus should be back soon… he disappeared for two weeks and I couldn’t reach him… thought the worst. He was back in the hospital, but he is officially on the mend and should be back to his old, ornery self at some point.
