The official announcement that he has turned down the Cincinnati Bengals should be exciting news for Phins Fans.
But close is no cigar.
As per PFR: ” If he joins Miami, Capers would advise a first-time head coach in Brian Flores and a rookie defensive coordinator in Patrick Graham. In Jacksonville, Capers would join a relatively established staff lead by head coach Doug Marrone and DC Todd Wash. “
Capers has a choice between mentoring or going for the glory one last time.
Given that Brian Flores wants to run “multiple looks”, or the old term that was used in Miami under Mike Nolan 3-4 / 4-3 Hybrid, Capers would be an invaluable resource.
Also, this would be another former, successful Head Coach on the staff. And that can only help these young coaches.
With Marvin Allen to support Chris Grier, Jim Caldwell to assist Brian Flores, and Capers to advise Patrick Graham, youth and experience would be merged perfectly. This staff would be the best ‘on paper’ that Miami has had in a long time.
SO: Boogie your ‘good luck’ dance and boogie till you can’t boogie any more that Capers comes to South Florida!
As an overseer of the defense, Miami would have one of the best football minds in the game to help foster both coaches and players.
Capers has had lows and highs over his career
Yes, Capers was fired this year after the Packers defense had an atrocious showing. But they were a disaster on every front and key defensive pieces that Capers had were in sharp decline.
Yes, Packers have finished outside the top 15 in defensive rankings six of the past seven years…
But, again, we know that the Packers have skimped on talent, especially defensive talent for a long time.
If you have forgotten, Capers was once the Dolphins Defensive Coordinator under Nick Saban. In his first season, he posted the 5th Ranked Defense. But, as the Saban plan collapsed, so did the defense. Capers was fired the next season.
Capers is good, but not great. Rex Ryan and Wade Phillips have more zing to them. Capers is a little more talent dependent. Still, there’s no denying his value and success.
This time around, Capers wouldn’t be the play caller but a well of knowledge. I like this role for him better at this stage of his career.
Unfortunately, the pay per head services aren’t giving good chances that Flores reels in Capers. So if Flores can make a good enough pitch to have Capers choose this roster over the Jaguars and Coughlin, you’d have to give the new Head Coach a bow. Here’s to giving a curtsy… Go Phins!!!
