In all the talk of passing, Ajayi’s receiving skills should be front and center.

Will Ajayi be consistent enough in the passing game?

There’s alot of talk about Tannehill needing to improve his passing. There’s alot of talk about the speed of Grant. There’s alot of talk about Landry having a super year, and Parker staying healthy, and Carroo being a steal…

But, for Adam Gase, given his love of the running back position and desire for an every-down, feature back, I’m sure there’s alot of talk about the backs being able to run and catch the ball – namely Jay Ajayi.

Drake is expected to be able to do both – but, nothing, especially his durability, is a sure football gambling bet on the NFL level.

Williams had an unexpected shine his rookie year, then fizzled.

Jay Ajayi can run the ball. The zone-stretch will give him the perfect system to showcase his talents. But, it will be his ability to catch the ball that might very well determine the type of year he and the Dolphins offense ends up having.

Gase’s passing game thrives on tempo.

Gase loves match-ups and making them work for his offense. This means the offense must have few substitutions – and certainly can’t be forced into them. If an offense must stop to bring in personnel, then the defense is countering with theirs, and much of the benefit attempting mismatches is lost. That’s why Gase stresses flexibility in his offensive players.

Jay Ajayi hasn’t been stellar in his receiving skills this minicamp. He hasn’t been terrible – not by a long shot, more like average to above average. But, he must get more consistent.

The running back as the outlet, or later progression option must make their ‘grabs’ as drops often end up a drive killer. Confidence in an RB’s hands is essential in the new NFL.

So, as crucial asTannehill having a good year passing, as well as the many receiver subplots, Jay Ajayi catching the rock is right up there, front and center. Go Fins!!!
