Dolphins Corner Jalen Davis Who?

Many not even realize Phins have a cornerback named Jalen Davis

Phinsnews liked UDFA Jalen Davis when he was signed and we expected to see more of him in 2018. Although Davis only showed up in the last two games of the season, his tape popped.Considering there are only a few ‘sure’ cornerbacks on the roster, Miami needs to find some ‘answers’ from the rest of the squad not named Bobby McCain, Xavien Howard, or Minkah Fitzpatrick. McCain is being cross-trained at Safety… which is interesting. So they must have some comfort with the rest of the squad to move longstanding nickelback McCain out of the position… even if it ends up just for spot duty or depth.Obliviously, the first thought of quality play from the rest would be Eric Rowe (PFF rating 62.9 ) at CB2 and Minkah at Nickel if McCain drop to be the last line of defense. But health isn’t one of Rowe’s positives. And even still, Miami needs more than just four quality backs. So out of the remaining players, who will step forward to make a difference this season?
Here are the contenders:
  • Cornell Armstrong: 6th Round pick in 2nd Year with a PFF coverage rating of 48.5 (Below Avg.) over 83 snaps.
  • Jalen Davis: UDFA nickel corner in 2nd Year with a PFF rating of 78.8 (Above Avg.) over 48 snaps.
  • Torry McTyer: UDFA 3rd Year with a PFF rating of 52.0 (Below Avg.) over 346 snaps.
  • Cordrea Tankersley: 3rd Round Pick with a 2017 PFF rating of 53.6 (Below Avg.) over 641 snaps.
  • Jomal Wiltz: UDFA 3rd Year with no rating.
  • Montre Hartage: Rookie
  • Tyler Horton: Rookie
Cornerback is one of the hardest positions to transition from college to the pros. Few come out the gates looking good. Most corners need 2-3 seasons to settle into the position. It took Xavien Howard about a year and a half to round into form. With this in mind, let’s examine the above:Cornell Armstrong looked a lot better than his PFF Grade shows. Despite being a 6th Round pick from a small school, his coverage was never disastrous like it was with Tankersly in 2017. Often, catches were made on him while he had close, but not tight, coverage. This is normal as stated above… The question is will and can he take the next step?Torry McTyer flashed both good and bad in his extended appearance last year… But less than stellar performance made the bilk of his showing. Will the experience of 2018 help him progress?Cordrea Tankersley looked good for about two games in 2017… then he folded like a cheap chair. Tankersly hasn’t been able to take part in OTAs due to his recovery from a torn ACL. This is bad news for him because he needs every advantage to make it. The only good news for him is Flores likes to play man press, and this was where Tankersly was at his best.
I like Jalen Davis the best of the rest… at the nickel
In 48 snaps, Davis compiled a forced fumble, sack, and 5 tackles. Not bad for his limited exposure. But we have to remember he was a stud in college… so maybe this production was more than a mirage?
You can see in the film Davis has good feet, fluid hips, intelligence, and physicality. It’s a good bet with the pay per head bookie services like Ace Per Head that this point, Davis will make the team a quality back up Nickelback and sixth DB in the dime…… But even still, Miami will need another cover-man (or two) to step forward. Fingers crossed. Go Phins!!!*I want to thank Randy Richbourg and his comments for being the genesis of this article.
