DeVante Parker Extension Speaks Volumes

Up until this year, DeVante Parker has disappointed, but now he is shining bright

Over his first four seasons, DeVante Parker has been a lightning rod of criticism from Dolphins fans and considered a disappointment given his draft status. Despite liking Parker ‘the person’, Phinsnews has been highly critical of Parker ‘the player’ and viewed him as the poster boy for the Phins failures. And he has been…

... But, Parker also represents the good of what is to come.

The vision of Chris Grier and Brian Flores to extend Parker an extra year prior to the season was a wise move. It created the leverage to get a friendly deal done this year. And certainly, the coaching of Flores and his staff put Parker in a good environment to develop. Both Philbin and Gase had a crack at coaching Parker… with no success. The fact that it took Gase’s regime two and half seasons to figure out that Parker wasn’t hydrating himself (among other things) is a prime example of how much lack of detail he had for the Phins. BUT, this ‘turnaround’ isn’t about anyone but Parker himself.

Lack of knowledge had Parker lost…

Give credit where credit is due. Not the extension nor the right environment would have done a drop of good if Parker hadn’t grown as a player and a man. I tip my hat to you, DeVante Parker. Your ‘tale of career redemption’ is admirable.

The NFL chews players up, young and old, for injuries, lack of talent, raw deals, foolish decisions, and lack of self-awareness… and spits them out without even looking back. It takes the rare person to make it in the NFL, and an even rarer person to find success after they’ve dug themselves into a hole.

Now plenty of people tried to reach Parker over the years, but their advice fell on deaf ears. Young people are foolish. Who can’t relate? But, those words planted seeds and now they have grown. Still, it’s Parker who is preparing, being disciplined, and putting in the work. And as Flores has said several times, ‘all he has seen from Parker is being a complete professional’.

Let’s forget the past and move forward.

Parker has a new contract and his future looks bright

Miami has given Parker a 4-year extension worth $40 million making him a Dolphins through the 2023 Season. The deal has an $8 million signing bonus and $21.5 million in guaranteed money. So Flores has full confidence in Parker. The contract is a team-friendly one too. Parker is now the 25th highest-paid receiver in the league. You can bet with the best sportsbook software services that this is a winner for Miami if his current production continues. Parker’s 882 yards, 16.0 average, 6 TDs, and 43 first downs, ranks him 21st in yards, tied for 17th in Touchdowns, 18th in first downs, and tied for 16th in plays over 20 yards.

The question is of course, will it continue? I don’t know. But, Flores and Grier have banked on that it will. I’ll trust their judgment on this one. Go Phins!!!

I too was very critical of Parker and did not think he should be on the team in fact I’ve been talking trading him for years at least the last two years but I’m pleasantly surprised that he has played as well as he did this year and he earned this contract.

He’s playing lights out I just hope he continues much credit to the coaching staff also.

Yeah, Mark. I think both parties played a part. Maybe if Gase was more in touch with his players, relatable, and aware, Parker might have ‘got it’ quicker. Either way, I’m just glad he got it for his sake and ours. If Williams can heal right, and Parker can stay healthy, they will be a scary duo

Parker is injury prone. If he has a good final portion of the season, he should be traded. Boost his trade value and trade him while healthy.

It’s hard to say. His concussion was a hard shot. Other than that he has been excellent as far as the ability to play hurt this season. From what I’ve heard he is taking care of himself. Of course, you could be right. We’ll see. Trading him now would put 30mill on the Phins books… don’t see it. Maybe in 21 the earliest.
