DeVante Looking Good In OTAs, BUT…

DeVante is looking sharp and making plays in OTAs a reason for excitement?

DeVante Parker has all the tools… in OTAs

DeVante Parker is going through OTAs for his 3rd regime… and he has never looked better. But, it’s so early in the process and there isn’t any contact. Then there is Parker’s history of early blossom and quick wilts that screams, ‘hold your horses’. Fans and coaches have been here before believing the breakout season is coming.

Could the redemption arc of DeVante Parker be around the corner this time? Or will Lucy pull the ball away from Charlie Brown again?

The odds with the pay per head services aren’t good that there will be a big course correction. Of course, they have been wrong before.

Parker is just one area of the Miami Dolphins that is looking to turn over a new leaf. Heck, the franchise itself is attempting to rise from the ashes. So where does Parker’s story rank amid the many redemption stories of the 2019 Miami Dolphins?

The main reclamation plot lines of the Phins heading into camp
  • Josh Rosen is obviously the most crucial
  • Offensive Line most important ‘wake up’ of the units
  • Run Defense is the runner-up to the O-line
  • Is DeVante Parker the next biggest player comeback story behind Rosen?
  • Ryan Fitzpatrick has his last chance to stick with a team as a starter
  • Charles Harris needs to get it right or wear the bust label
  • Daniel Kilgore signed for big money and flopped
  • Steven Ross has struck out bad on every major decision… Did he get this one right?

Did I miss any? Is Parker 2nd on the list of player Cinderella stories for Miami?

DeVante Parker could be a crucial poster boy to the value of Brian Flores’ influence… if he ‘gets right’

Athleticism and physical talent have never been a weakness of #11. Parker’s problems have always revolved around professionalism, toughness, and durability. With the ink on Parker’s new 2-year contract barely dry…

here we are again, tantalized by the potential and possibilities.

Parker made two beautiful catches over Xavien Howard and dominated in the Red Zone. As Omar Kelly said, ‘Parker is the starting Wide Receiver in all the drills… never saw that before.’ Then there was all the gushing by the staff over every success Parker has in OTAs. This is excellent coaching, but it points to a major problem Parker has: weakness.

Only Parker has received (and needed) such adoration. Given the staff reserved treatment of the rest of the receivers, they didn’t ‘require’ the perpetual ‘pep talk’. Yes, this continued igniting of Parker’s ego could start a blaze. This is smart coaching and the right move. there’s no doubt that IF Parker should bloom, fans, this regime, and Parker himself will reap huge positive returns.

Still, I’m finding it hard to buy into his hype this year.

After last year’s ‘water drinking debacle’, I wrote this article and took a little heat for being harsh. Some thought I ‘was hating’. It’s not that I don’t like the kid. There’s nothing about him that’s ‘bad’. But football is a harsh game of production. In the NFL finish nice guys finish last more often than not… unless they have another face when the pads go on.

Grier and Flores are approaching Parker the right way

While it felt like Grier was chasing his tail by extending Parker… it was the right move. The Cap isn’t tight this year, and the Dolphins needed to give this new regime a chance to help Parker reach his potential. Brian Flores and his staff are doing the right thing by talking Parker up to heal his damaged psyche. Even DeVante is doing the right thing by coming out and performing lights out.

None of this will matter if when the pads come on Parker can’t handle the abuse. So don’t get excited till the Preseason Games come and Parker shines… and remains healthy. Still, we should all root for his success… just don’t get too invested. As it was once said, “There’s nothing worse than wasted talent.”Go Phins!!!

    Blah blah blah.

Parker is a colossal bust and should have been cut along with the other dead weight.

That’s pretty much the point of the article… but, for a 6 mill (or so) roll of the dice to make a miracle happen, it was the right move by Grier. Likely won’t pan out, but a 1 year try out is wise.

Parker is a great OTA story………….. Problem is, we have heard this before, and before only for reality set in come regular season/pads, etc. You can never tell from year to year with younger players, some progress, some digress, some stay stagnant, and some wilt. Unfortunately, it has been the latter for Parker. But, we are with a new staff, and I like the way the staff seems to be verbally commending the player Parker (and only Parker) for all the good that he is displaying at that moment, in these OTA’s.

If Parker does his normal disappearing act come season, we all can probably predict that at the very least we should get two MONSTER games from Parker this season. Can anyone guess which two games it would be???? Yep, the NY Jet games. I’m sure Parker has circled these games and can’t wait to bust out and flaunt it for Gase.

    Main reclamation plot lines (IMO):
    – Rosen can be the key that can accelerate and catapult this team/franchise. If hes answer, wow, lotz of $ and draft capital
    – I think (hope) we are on to something with our left side, hope a new look and a better game plan can maximize the O-Lines effectiveness
    – Believe that COACHING alone will improve the run defense and the defense overall. Burke was a disaster
    – Parker: see above
    – Fitzpatrick will continue to surface, even if it is not with the Fins
    – Again, hoping that a competent “D” coordinator/staff will compliment Harris and unlock his potential
    – Kilgore is average at best, would think they are hoping someone beats him for the center position
    – Ross, if you can’t beat them, you may as well join them. He went the Patriot way, lets all hope (fingers/toes crossed) that the Patriot way has found its way to South Beach

*** Imagine if both Rosen is the answer, and the light finally comes on for Parker ***

I can’t wait to watch some good’ole boring football with a lot of 12 personal, a fullback, run, run, run. Solid defense and a solid running game could keep most games close. Close enough for either team to win regardless which team(s) they are.

I am curious and excited to see our LBers in this defense. One week a 3-4 base, the next 4-3 base (depending on the opponent). Baker could have a huge season, Is McMillan the player we seen last year, or has he shaken off his red shirt (injured) and rookie seasons and is ready to make an impact????

      Hey, brother…
Yeah, it’s Groundhog Day for sure… but maybe, like the movie, he finally gets it right? I’m not getting invested… but maybe. Heck, even if he can just stay healthy and contribute is good enough… even if it doesn’t end up to what his draft status and overall talent could make him into. At this point, his 6 mill a year we just need something.
“– Believe that COACHING alone will improve the run defense and the defense overall. Burke was a disaster”
I still think Burke was okay for a green DC, but the scheme and talent to match it was a disaster… Gase’s terrible O didn’t help. Flores is much better though as is the scheme… of course, the proof is in the pudding.

Funny, I was going to put McMillan on the list.. but he ended pretty well and some readers might balk at him on the list. Wasn’t ready to open that can of worms yet :).
I do think he will fit in much better… at the end of last season, he was given more pass coverage responsibilities that fit his ability. I also, expect him not to be forced into being a 3 down backer… I do think he can shine in a limited set of duties. I really need to start focusing on the D more…
