Darren Rizzi Moving On…

Darren Rizzi has been a bright light during his tenure

Darren Rizzi was a fan favorite… and will be missed

It’s now ‘official’, Darren Rizzi will not be returning to the Miami Dolphins next season.

This wasn’t an unexpected outcome. But, saying goodbye to a good soldier is never easy.

The ‘word on the street’ is, after a discussion with future head coach Brian Flores, Rizzi has decided to move on.

Two undisclosed teams are vying for his services. You can bet with the
pay per head software services like AcePerHead.com, that which every team he goes to that they’ll be one of the best units in the league.

Phinsnews loves Rizzi, as most Phins Fans do, and saw him as a legitimate contender for the job of the Miami Dolphins Head Coach. Also, plenty of past and present Dolphins player lobbied for Rizzi, but it wasn’t enough…

… Instead, the Dolphins went with Brian Flores.

It’s likely that Rizzi felt his near decade of loyalty would never get repaid.

The biggest concern we had with Rizzi was his ability to gather a talented coaching staff around him.

Could he have assembled a solid staff? We’ll never know. But his animated coaching style will be missed.

Rizzi was more than fun to watch, though. He put forth one of the best Special Team’s units in the NFL, year in and year out. Besides his contributions as Associate Head Coach, Rizzi was the best Special Teams Coach Miami has had since Mike Westhoff, who was another fan favorite that was lost to a regime transition.

Danny Crossman will be the new Special Teams Coordinator on Flores’ staff. Rizzi has left big shoes to fill and it’s a longshot that Crossman will be as good…

… But you never know.

It wasn’t long ago that the Dolphins opted to move away from another fan favorite, Dan Campbell, for Adam Gase.

That decision hasn’t silenced the belief of many Phins Fans that Campbell would have been the better move. Many fans wanted a solid and loyal known instead of ‘going fish’.

Three years later, many wonder how this franchise would have done if Ross had stuck with Campbellthrough a rebuild, instead of continuing the insanity of retooling with Gase at the helm.

Campbell was another solid rock replaced by something shiny that turned out to be nothing more than a lump of coal.

Bottom line: retooling with a dysfunctional hierarchy would have doomed Campbell just the same.

We’ll never know if Campbell or Rizzi would have been a better move than Gase or Flores.

Flores at least will have the best opportunity to set the foundation of this team and build a real winner. Only Don Shula had that oppertunity. Jimmy had to go with Marino… his regime was a retool. Every other regime was a rush job to win now.

This time though, Miami is full steam ahead in a rebuild. Whatever team comes out of this regime will ALL Grier’s and Flores’ handiwork. If this regime flops, they won’t have anyone to blame but themselves. But, if they can make the Dolphins into a winner again, Rizzi’s loss will be more than compensated for. Go Phins!!!

I hate to see Rizzi go but I knew this was bound to happen. It would have been awkward for him to be involved with the team after being rejected for the HC job. I was hoping he would have gotten it but completely understand why he did not. He is such a good coach that he will excel wherever he goes and one day will be a HC in the NFL. Best wishes Coach Rizzi.

100% agree, Fritz! But if Ross puts out a rotten egg out this time, it will be ugly. I’m hopeful though… but, despite trying to be an objective writer, at heart I’m just a fan… or fanatic. Hope like hell that we don’t screw it up this time.

I wish Coach Rizzi well. I believe that he will see better days ahead once he is hired by his next team. The Dolphin’s new broom is sweeping clean.

Succinct and true, Van. Still… I’m not on suicide alert… if they can even operate at a B / B+ level. Still, I was crushed to see Westoff move on and be a Jest… this is close. Ross better nail this or he might find no one in the stands, but opposing team’s fans.

Rizzi was a great asset for the dolphins for his years of service, but not as a head coach. That being said, do you know of any nfl teams mention his name over the years as a head coach?

Agree, Bill… I think Rizzi is raw… as was Campbell… but in a rebuild with some good coaches around them, they would have matched Philbin and Gase. Maybe they would have been better? Only history will tell what Campbell, Rizzi, and Flores will become. I loved Rizzi, but my gut said Flores out the gates as I ( and everyone else) love the Patriots process… that was until I realized how bad the coaching tree of Belichick is, then I agreed with Jimmy on Ricard. Still, after all this, I like the direction. My opinion could very well change down the road based on history. Phins need to not totally screw this one up…
