Over the last few days we have spoken about whether or not the Dolphins should bring back Hartline and Wallace, and lastly today we will talk about the third receiver that the phins management will need to make a decision on; Brandon Gibson. Gibson was signed two years ago but suffered a season-ending ACL injury in the middle of his first season with the team. Heading into next season he will count $4.26 million against the cap.

I would much rather see the Dolphins release Gibson and give Rishard Matthews more playing time because even though he barely received any playing time last year, he still made the most of his limited time with 2 touchdowns and an 11.3 average yards per catch. The issue with Matthews is that for whatever reason, Philbin and he have had problems with each other behind the scenes, so as a punishment Matthews gets limited playing time or has been left off the playing roster.
Lastly, there is a solid list of free-agent wide receivers that will hit the market this upcoming 2015 season, so if the Dolphins really want to make a splash they may decide to let Hartline, Wallace, and Gibson take a walk, and use the combined savings and go after a stud receiver like Dez Bryant, Demaryius Thomas or Jeremy Maclin. Even if Miami does not chase one of those big names there is still a solid list of other reliable receivers such as Michael Crabtree, Cecil Shorts, Torrey Smith, Reggie Wayne, Wes Welker, Hakeem Nicks, Miles Austin, Denarius Moore, and Randall Cobb. I would say any of these players would be an upgrade over at least Hartline and Gibson.
What does the rest of the phins fans think?
The Miami Dolphins WR Corps is in for a complete make over. The Dolphins have the highest paid receiving Corps and serious cap space issues. Miami is projected to have $2.5 Million in available cap space for 2015. So, Miami will more than likely Designate LB Danielle Ellerbe as a June 1st cut to create $8.5 million in much needed cap space. The Dolphins will likely then look at the Wide Receivers to free up some cap space as well. Miami could designate Mike Wallace as a June 1st cut and clear up $6.9 Million ($5.2 million in dead money) in additional cap space or Brian Hartline which would clear up $5.9M ($1.4 million in dead money).
Fortunately Miami doesn’t to designate Gibson, Gibson can be released which will free up an additional $3.26 Million in cap space. Gibson isn’t worth the money and should definitely be cut Loose. Gibson has lost his starting job and has fallen well short of the expectations as a reserve receiver; Gibson has two fumbles and corralled less receptions than HB Lamar Miller.
The issues with Rishard Mattews aren’t quite so simple. Matthews has apparently been late to several practices and doesn’t want to play for the Dolphins or possibly just doesn’t want to play for Philbin. Regardless, Miami can’t count on Matthews stepping up and earning a starting role in the Offense.
Other players who might be cut or traded this season; #1 DT – Randy Starks, $5 million in cap savings. Starks seemed to hit his peak and didn’t perform so well this season. #2 CB – Releasing Cortland Finnegan would clear up another $6 million in cap space. Finnegan hasn’t played as well as anticipated plus he has hinted to retiring this year.
Everyone is talking about drafting a WR at #1 like Kevin White or acquiring a Free Agent like Dez Bryant or even Jeremy Maclin. Nobody has said anything about a MUCH cheaper 27 year old Veteran WR who is built and plays much like Dez Bryant. A WR who is on pace for a break out season (barring injury) Kenny Britt. Miami NEEDS to take a good look and seriously consider bringing in Britt to play opposite Wallace or another speedy WR like the Jaguars Cecil Shorts, who is also on pace for a break out season.
Should Wallace & Hartline depart Miami, I hope to see Britt and Shorts arrive! I hope to see Britt in Miami regardless!!!
Go for best middle linebacker in free agency. Draft the second coming of Barry sander’s in draft first round,second round draft either best receiver or another linebacker best on the board. Do what they may with receivers, with a backfield like that you cam put grandma out the and she will be open.

Dez Bryant?????????? That relationship would last about two minutes with coach Philbin and then we would be back to the same old drama of why he was benched. furthermore I believe the first round should be used for a star middle line backer I think that would be a difference maker.
Understand middle linebacker; however, can you find a #1 WR in later rounds (highly doubtful), can you find one in free agency (again, highly doubtful, ie: Wallace). You can find a serviceable linebacker in later rounds (Keuchly). WR has to be the pick there, cut/release/trade other 3 WRs. By the way we did have the highest paid WR core in the league last year, what a joke. Only one way to go here!
Dez Bryant will never get out of Dallas, Jerry will use the Franchise tag on Bryant or sign him long term. Miami can’t afford a duo like Wallace / Bryant right now and even if Miami drops Wallace with the June 1st cut Designation that only frees up $6.9M this year and Dez wants more than that.
-Maclin is stuck in Philly, he will likely retire as an Eagle and he probably gets a fat contract this year.
– Cecil Shorts is an excellent and viable option. Shorts could easily replace Wallace for half the cash and NONE of the mouth!
I really would LOVE to see a Duo like Britt / Shorts tearing up with Landry in the slot and Clay at TE! That would be INCREDIABLE!!! Especially if Miami can control the L.O.S with a new guard and a well Developed Billy Turner and Damien Williams ready to ROCK 2015!!!
Odrick is going to bank in free agency (elsewhere some team that needs a 3-4 DE) and Starks showed his age last year and will be a 2015 cap casualty.
1st Round Miami needs a DT that can clog up the running lanes and keep blockers off the linebackers. DT – Danny Shelton – Washington Huskey – 6’2 340. He snacks on running backs. Option #2 -DT – Eddie Goldman – FSU – 6’4 320.
WR Miami has an available cap balance around $2M for 2015, they’re not signing Dez Bryant. (again and you can talk smack now but Britt is going to break out in a HUGE way in 2015!)
Kenny Britt 6’3 230 goes up and fights for the ball. He has a play style very similar to Dez Bryant but thanks to Britt playing with SEVERAL terrible QB’s AND an injury early in his career, Britt is a MUCH cheaper option.
Britt signed a 1 year contract with the Rams last season for less than $2 Million.
MLB Jenkins stepped up at MLB, he did a fine job and will only get better. Should Miami decide they need an MLB; odds are Brandon Spikes will be available and he’s great on run D!
2nd round God willing Gerod Holliman will be available. Holliman is probably the best DB in the draft this year with 14 picks this season! He’s 6’2 220. He plays FS but is also great in man coverage and zone.
3rd Round – Duke – Guard Laken Tomlinson! Mark my words the kid is a future Probowler! He might last until the 4th but he’s a steal in the 2nd! Kid is almost perfect physically, Mentally and Fundamentally BUT he is a whole 2 inches short of the prototypical NFL Guard. His natural instincts are just perfect and he lines up, plays low keeping his thighs parallel to the ground.
4th or 5th (Round a power back)Option #1 Alabama – FB – Halston Fowler 6’0 248lbs -/- Option #2 Matt Jones HB -UF- 6’1 235lbs -/- Option #3 – HB – FSU – Karlos Williams 6’1 225
After that Miami needs Depth like a cheap rookie signal caller/ back up QB. Moore is to pricey for a cap strapped team like Miami. Plus let’s face it, Moore isn’t competing for the job, he’s happy riding the bench all the way to the bank.
Release or trade all 3 of the WRs (Wallace, Hartline, Gibson). Use your first round draft pick on a WR opposite Landry. There most likely will be a game changer therer when they are on the clock (Kevin White-W.V, Devante Parker-Louv., Cooper-Ala., Green-Beckham-Okl., Funchess-Mich.).In a perfect scenario Parker or White would fall to them (which is most likely to happen), giving them a big (6’3) outside target, teaming him up with Tannehill, Landry, a nice young cap friendly duo to grow with Tanny for years to come.
We know Gibson is out (as he does also), Hartline should follow, and our biggest headache (WALLACE) should be shipped somewhere for whatever we can get for him, hopefully at least a third round pick!
CUT/TRADE/RELEASE all 3-SERIOUSLY!!!
