Campbell: ‘Changes Coming’

When Philbin was sent packing, the era of change for the Miami Dolphins started. Now with Rizzi being promoted to assistant head coach, the staff seems to be set and the changes finished – at least till next year.  But changes to scheme and players have just begun.

This is what we know and what Campbell has announced.

  1. Miami will be aggressive and although they will keep the defensive scheme DL will no longer read and react and soak up blocks. They will penetrate gaps and disrupt. He also mentioned secondary will be more aggressive which lends towards CB not sitting 10yrds back every play.
  2. The  catchphrase “tough” has been the key mantra and Campbell has said in no fewer words ‘Miami ran too much.’ Part of this pass obsession (most in the league 74%), he said, was due to them perpetually being behind. Either way, the run game is going to be emphasized. This leads to another problem: personnel.
  3. Campbell said there could be jobs lost this week. Dallas and Douglas are rated 78th and 79th out of 79 guards according to Pro Football Focus. Jamil Douglas has allowed 16 quarterback hurries (most in the league) and Dallas Thomas has permitted 13 (second-most). Dallas has been playing next to Jason Fox and that could be a mitigating factor, but Douglas has no such excuse. Schematics also played a factor as Philbin believed guards must “block alone”. Several times I saw Dallas leaving the Tackles defender and sliding right only to have the defender rush into the vacated hole. As an example, Tannehill completed just 12 of 32 passes for 127 yards and two picks when blitzed on Sunday (a 34.2 rating). He was 7 for 12 for 71 yards and a 103.1 rating when he wasn’t blitzed.
  4. PFF graded Ryan Tannehill as the Dolphins’ worst player on offense and Kelvin Sheppard the worst player on defense on Sunday. I don’t see a move at QB; one point in support of this ( as well as Points 2&3) is this season Tannehill is being pressured on 43.7 percent of his dropbacks (the highest percentage in the league), up from 38.4 percent last season. To make things worse, when Tannehill can get the ball to a receiver, he is seeing it dropped more often. But MLB has no such excuse. In Coyle scheme MLB was needed to make tackles as the DL soaked up blocks – Sheppard didn’t make it happen. It is a near must that we see a change (if anyone on this roster can play better) and we could see a new MLB this week.

Coach Campbell has his work cut out for him and even the best pay per head reviews are saying the odds aren’t good. Schematic shifts, game preparation, and personnel changes needing to be made where no better substitute exists. IF coach Campbell and staff pull this one-off, then we Fins have found a real winner to lead our team!! Either way, we should see much more effort and that alone could lead to good things. What do all you Miami Fans think? GO FINS!!!!

I believe doing away with read and react for the D-Line will bring some improvement. There will be some changes on the O-Line personnel i.e. Billy Turner in for Jamil Douglas. Greg Jennings being benched giving the younger guys more opportunities will help. I see a good chance of getting to 500. I don’t see any trades happening.

  • ### SOUP! Campbell can. .bring out the best in what we have, If the Cub’s can do it as well as the Bear’s can change what people believe so can our DOLPHINS!!!!Our coaching staff can change

I don’t think we should jump out and trade some of our best players just yet. I know, I know but give this kid a chance.
I think the little we have seen so far seems OK, he lopped off one of our problems already and I think he’s savy enough to not jump from the pan into the fire. Don’t forget he was one of the best blocking TE around, that alone tells me he can teach how to block. I like his approach and well– we will see

Its not necessarily trading our best players. However, trading a player from a position of depth to improve a HUGE need may be the right move at this point because the season is not over. WR is a position that seems to have depth, Defensive End is another position with some depth. RB may not be our deepest position depth wise, but, w/Miller on a contract year may not be a bad move at this time.
Doesn’t mean Coach Campbell is panicking!

What is happening with keyshon Moreno
    Is he recovered
I bet we could sign him cheap
I think it would be wise to give him a chance
We really don’t loose anything by trying
Probably better than what we are doing now
We need to run and be successful at it

    Trade deadline fast approaching
We know we need 2 guards and s linebacker
What are we doing about that ?? Let’s trade

Opening Day II, Oct.18 @ Tennessee = awesome!

Can we trade a RB to KC for one of their “O” guards? Or, how about a WR to Dallas for one of their top 4 guards/ Someone that can be a upgrade, can’t be hard! I haven’t looked at their rosters but I’m sure that their top 4 guards are better than our 2 starters. Right now wouldn’t matter if RB is a need for this team because of said trade.

A different approach on defense should lead to better results defensively. Same goes for the offense. Looking forward to see the subtle changes made.

Can you believe Miami is a underdog in Sundays game? Can someone please post that in Miami’s locker room for bulletin board material?

Nice write up, excited about the new coach. While being competitive is more important than winning, getting win on this first game back will help energy and rally the players behind Campbell. Time to cut it loose!
